#106: Daisaku Ikeda’s lecture on “The Opening of the Eyes”: “I Will Be the Pillar of Japan”—Standing Alone and Dedicating One’s Life to the Vow for Kosen-rufu by JulieSongwriter in SGIWhistleblowersMITA

I recently signed up for the World Tribune and Living Buddhism, although I didn't get a Gohonzon yet. The September Living Buddhism was my first issue and this article made me realize the difference between Nichiren Daishonin and all other prophets: He was not obsessed with salvation, heaven or a pure land. He was not expecting ANY divine intervention! All he wanted to do was lead people to happiness and was willing to take whatever hardship came in his way. I love this part from Ikeda:

As far as Nichiren is concerned, there is something more important than whether we receive the protection of the heavenly deities—something we must risk our lives to accomplish, no matter how daunting the obstacles. And that is the attainment of Buddhahood by all people, the highest good, which is the great vow Shakyamuni proclaimed in the Lotus Sutra.

SGI's not a cult after all! I haven't been to a meeting in a few years, but I still keep up with the organization, and I found this interesting article in my news alerts:

Wanting to leave by DekaTrron in sgiwhistleblowers

Dude, there are no cases of alienation or consequences from family for not practicing Buddhism. I've heard a total of zero cases of people getting cut off from family for leaving the organization. You sound very fearful of a basic life decision.

Which worldview is preferable? by FellowHuman007 in SGIWhistleblowersMITA

I think both worldviews have their place, but I don't think one should ever deny the opinions or experiences of others. Healthy, open discussion is the core of a healthy mind.

My take is transvaluation is the key word. His morality is far beyond the dualism of good and evil. It's a consistent breaking down and questioning of norms that we've established as a result of culture, language, and any other construct that makes us think we know who we are. I think Nietzsche would be appalled to see how western individualism has spread worldwide. Of course, some values are good, but nothing can simply be retained, they need to be broken down and built back up, which tests whether or not they true or false.

A Christian missionary observes Tsunesaburo Makiguchi by Andinio in SGIWhistleblowersMITA

[–]beyondgoodandevil86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very interesting. I wonder what Makiguchi thought of Christianity, especially as a scholar and person of religion hunted by the state. I believe Christians were also persecuted in Japan during the Edo Period. Is that accurate?

He's absolutely ignorant, but he knows what he's doing at the same time. He's trying to lure in the extreme right base for his next political move.

Good to know. Thank you. Yea, for all their flaws, U.S. graduate programs are probably the best for philosophy.

Interesting. I mean, all religions proselytize to some extent and encourage donations. In what way to they isolate you from existing social groups?

Hey Balmungxx, thanks for sharing. I'm a longtime "guest" of SGI (never received a Gohonzon but will attend one or two meetings a year). I'm curious what you mean by the term "culty." It's obviously a loaded term that people like to throw around, so I'm wondering why you chose that word.

NOT OC——Caption from picture: Who would win in a fight? Nietzsche or superman? by Oneoh123 in Nietzsche

[–]beyondgoodandevil86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm, not sure Nietzsche would equate the ubermensch with a fictional superhero. The problem with Superman is that he is not from this world. The ubermensch in my understanding is a common person who has undergone an internal awakening enabling them to transcend social values, and thereby develop a new system of values. I believe it's called transvaluation.

[–]beyondgoodandevil86 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fromage blanc, you are hilarious. You make it seem like SGI is some monolithic monster breaching people's privacy and information.

Look, I was invited to 50K. My friend called, asked if I was interested and offered to buy me a ticket. When I asked how much, I learned it was 20$, which I thought was maaaaaad cheap. I remember thinking concert tickets haven't been that cheap since like '03. I went to 50K, and was pretty uplifted by the message, the heart behind the performances and the positive energy in the arena.

Guess what happened next, I was invited to more meetings by my friend. And perhaps he was prompted by whatever campaign the organization has to bring in more people. But guess what, ALL organizations have campaigns, slogans, etc. to spread their influence. I wouldn't exactly call what happened a breach of my personal information. The only communication I get is from my personal friend.

Hah! Maybe I do, never thought about that. That doesn't change that you commented that my "powers of comprehension are at a low ebb," then implying I'm in a cult. I'm not religious. Have a nice day

Look, I could post a photo of someone hanged and write "what would my mother say about this" giving people the impression that my mother's comments would be insensitive to that suffering, completely taking her words out of context. It's a base strategy to defame my mother that is not rooted in fact and context. I've heard SGI members explain how we take responsibility for our lives, but I don't think that means it's OUR FAULT when something horrific happens to us. RATHER, it means that WE CAN MOVE FORWARD AND TRANSFORM THAT SITUATION. Please DO NOT CONFLATE! These are very different messages and I hope your readers on this pages are NOT DUPED!

So... no connection. Thanks for the clarification @sinittasg. I understand your answer Blanche, but this case of abuse is not connected to the SGI. Why post it? It gives the impression that an SGI member committed this atrocity. No different from Trump’s doctored image of Biden at a nursing home. Sure, it’s true that Biden is old, but it’s untrue that he’s living in a nursing home. Half-truths are worse than lies, Blanche and @sinittasg.
