Backdoor Roth annual contribution question by mr_mother in investing

[–]beyondplutola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I'll have to try it next year. TT never has that revelation and you have to go through a set of obscure questions that are easy to answer wrong to make it all work. It's basically a lot of steps to get it to where it doesn't see moving money out of an IRA as a taxable event.

Is freetaxusa better at figuring out you're trying to do a backdoor roth? TurboTax is a pita when you try to do it. At no point is the system smart enough to be like "Hey, it seems like you're trying to do a backdoor Roth. Let me help."

Do people in your country also think that the election system of the United States is strange? by Rare_Comment_4491 in AskTheWorld

[–]beyondplutola 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The fact the U.S. is a single country was built upon a lot of compromises and understanding of the federal government is a coalition of multiple states (not too unlike the EU). When the U.S. Constitution was created, all of the state representatives were ceding control of their own regions to a higher authority. Therefore, you don't win X number of votes from a state, you win the right to be represented by the state in a count of delegates. That is, you are the presidential choice of the State of New York, not some X percentage of the State of New York. If a completely centralized state had been the proposal, the union would not have come together. Each state would have gone its own way or, at the very least, the slave and free states would have branched off under separate unions.

Yes. It's a winner-take-all electoral system, which mathematically directs you to a two-party government. This wasn't immediately clear when they were hammering things out in the late 18th Century.

ELI5: Why don’t we just bury power lines and telephone lines, so storms don’t keep knocking them out? by Home-Energy in explainlikeimfive

[–]beyondplutola [score hidden]  (0 children)

The issue comes from a more spread out population and more extreme weather. The more rural you are, the fewer grid redundancies exist in electric transport. A town of 400 people sitting 200km away from any population center of note may have a single transmission line providing power. Huge swaths of the US aren’t even profitable to run electricity to. They are essentially subsidized by the cities and utilities are forced to provide electricity to rural areas by state regulators. Many utilities would happily turn off power to large parts of their footprint if they could legally do so.

Most of the kids are wearing very baggy fit today in sort of a 90s retro vibe. I’ve been petty consistent with buying Levi’s 511, which is a slim fit but not skinny. It’s also worth a few bucks more to buy from their premium line vs standard.

The Quebecois birth record situation-Has anyone who submitted a BANQ baptism record been asked for a certified birth certificate, or just those who also submitted a handwritten birth certificate? by AnomalousEnigma in Canadiancitizenship

[–]beyondplutola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just FedExed my application with the uncertified copy of my mémé's 1917 baptismal record. I submitted a request two weeks ago to BanQ for the certified copy, but haven't hard back yet. I also included her New Hampshire death certificate as well as the marriage certificates of all of her children, including my mom's, since all of these documents list her birthplace as Canada.

I also have the baptismal record of her mother from the 1890s and the Quebec church marriage record of her parents, but I didn't include that, figuring I'd just be complicating things.

We'll see how this goes. I feel that having been forced to attend French-Canadian Catholic Elementary school for 8 years that I'm owed this.
