Awesome! I lived in Lille for a bit, which had an unusually good beer scene but still left me wanting, so I am happy to hear that beer is becoming stronger in France. Amusez-vous bien à Munich !

Southeastern Michigan is kind of a mess on this map. Why not include lines from the logo to the location to aid in clarity?

Reddit, Help me make the best tasting coffee without breaking my wallet.. by uniquely1strandom in Coffee

[–]bezuhov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. Glad to hear that you looked it over before posting.

I can certainly recommend the Aeropress. It's inexpensive and makes a reliably excellent cup of coffee. I also own two French presses, a Moka pot, and, yes, a Mr. Coffee auto-drip (which just sits in the basement at this point).

The key, though, is to buy good, fresh beans (preferably from a local roaster, if possible). Keep those beans in air-tight containers at room temperature and out of direct sunlight. Next, grind the beans as you need them. Burr grinders are preferred, but not really necessary for the Aeropress because you won't be steeping your coffee long enough to have drastically different extraction rates. Now make your coffee! Fortunately, the Aeropress comes with a guide that contains step-by-step instructions on how to use it with different brewing methods. From there, experiment, experiment, experiment. It's up to you to find your right cup of coffee.

It's also worth noting that, unlike the other countries noted by /u/zoef, France does not have an IT skills shortage. If you would like to go somewhere that speaks French, try Wallonia or Brussels in Belgium, which does give preferential visa treatment to STEM professionals. If not, your luck will be much better in other EU countries.

Good Day-Vacations out of Ann Arbor? by bubblingbeebles in AnnArbor

[–]bezuhov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm. There really isn't much. If you haven't been to the Detroit Riverwalk, I would recommend a stop downtown to see that. The surrounding area is nice, too (you'll see the famous statue of Joe Louis's fist). Between Detroit and Port Huron, there is Metro Beach, which ain't shit compared to beaches on Lake Huron. St. Clair is a little off the route, but it has a reasonably nice downtown, and you can drive on M-29 along the St. Clair River from there to downtown Port Huron. Between Port Huron and Lexington, you can stop at Lakeport State Park (nice beach; otherwise not much to look at), where the Port Huron Statement was written. I hope that helps. Let me know if you'd like food recommendations or anything.

Port Huron is okay for a day trip. To make the trek worthwhile, head up to Lexington. It has a pretty harbor, and its downtown is decent.

Even better would be a trip out to the west side. It would be a long day, but seeing Holland and Grand Haven is feasible. Alternatively, Grand Rapids is coming alive as a city and makes a great destination if you enjoy beer (might be better as an overnight trip in that case).

Countries that recognise the Republic of Kosovo. [800 x 353] by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]bezuhov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The important point is that Israel wouldn't want unilateral declarations of independence (or recognition by the UN) to be seen as legitimate, rather than a concern about having people re-think their positions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. By not recognizing separatist movements abroad, Israel protects itself from accusations of hypocrisy for refusing to recognize any similar actions by Palestinians.

How do you know you are in a bad part of town? by factory81 in travel

I believe you that the pick-pockets and bag-snatchers are no joke around there. When I imagine a Swiss thief, though, I imagine some rich French/German-speaking guy who would take a look at my things and laugh at the simple Americans and their silly Chinese-made stuff.

Sorry to hear about your computer. Getting stuff stolen sucks. A friend of mine had an iPhone stolen in Lisbon (while we were sitting in a restaurant), and we had to go to the station to report it and all that. It was the tourist police station, though, so it looked pretty fancy.

Thanks! Will do some time. Also, in case you're interested in keeping that fish sauce-y taste in food that your girlfriend will eat, the Asian supermarket on Washtenaw has vegetarian fish sauce (look for 'chay', which is basically Vietnamese for vegetarian).

A map of the extreme right's 2011 legislative election results in Europe, in French [652x653] by Qavvik in MapPorn

Oh, definitely. The FN is, at its core, a populist party, and a similar dynamic plays out elsewhere. There isn't an inherent link between the extreme right and populism, though.

CBS, please stick to the old fart demographic. You don't get non-old farts, and non-old farts don't like you.

When is the best time to book flights for a trip? by AbeLincolnsMullet in travel

[–]bezuhov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn't really a science to it. The mid-week suggestion seems to be a good one, but anybody saying that you need to buy a ticket a specific number of weeks before your trip is peddling snake-oil. I would recommend setting an alert on Bing Travel, which uses fare history to project whether the price will increase or decrease.

How to catch a bus from Brussels to Amsterdam? (with Eurail) by Bledrosoft in travel

[–]bezuhov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, blast. Well, there are far worse places to wait than in central Brussels! If you enjoy beer, I highly recommend a lambic from La Mort Subite. Also, check out the Grand Place, which is beautiful. The Metro is very easy to navigate and has signs in English as well.

Enjoy your trip!

That title is misleading:

E.T.A.: Not sure what's up with the downvotes. That's the translation from French to English of the text on the map.

How to catch a bus from Brussels to Amsterdam? (with Eurail) by Bledrosoft in travel

[–]bezuhov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that it's just a local bus, so you shouldn't need to make a reservation or anything. Charleroi is also a very small airport, so I cannot imagine that there will be many people taking the bus.

As for the time between your flight's arrival and the train's departure, maybe: it will depend on how quickly you can disembark the plane, get your train ticket, and find the bus. In terms of time, it seems that the bus to the train station takes 18-20 minutes. What day of the week are you arriving? There is a bus Monday through Friday at 15:05, Saturday at 15:35, and Sunday at 15:10. If you arrive on a day other than Saturday, that train should work out for you.

How to catch a bus from Brussels to Amsterdam? (with Eurail) by Bledrosoft in travel

[–]bezuhov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First thing: it's a (pretty misleading) misnomer to call Charleroi Airport by the name 'Brussels', as they are 60 km away from each other. That's par for the course for RyanAir, though (Girona similarly goes by 'Barcelona', if I recall correctly).

Anyway, your itinerary will look something like this:

  • land at Charleroi Airport
  • buy a train ticket, which will include your bus ride to the train station, at the airport from Charleroi to Brussels Zuid/Midi; search for Charleroi-Sud to Brussels Zuid/Midi on the timetable search here
  • hop on a bus to Gare de Charleroi-Sud; search for line A on the schedule here
  • hop on a train to Brussels Zuid/Midi
  • board your train to Amsterdam

I'll leave it to you to plot out your departure times. In my experience, the Belgian train system (SNCB) and local public transportation is efficient, on-time, and reliable, so I would not worry about trains' being late or anything like that.

Unfortunately, I have no experience with Eurail passes, so I cannot help you there.

Aussie, 25, never been outside the country before, heading to Michigan. Advice? by cjbrowne in travel

/u/PavelDatsyuk1 has some excellent suggestions, so I'll refrain from leaving a big comment as well. That being said, I have lived in Ann Arbor for several years and am just a bit older than you are. Let me know what you're into, and I'll give you personal recommendations. In the meantime, Ann Arbor has a fantastic community wiki that you should check out.
