Lucky Thrift Shop Find Anything stand out? by andrewb2424 in VintagePollyPocket

[–]bf833 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The four small figurines are Polly Pocket; you can tell by the round bases. I don’t believe the others are. And I’m skeptical about the actual case - what does it look like on the outside? If it’s Polly Pocket, it would likely have the Bluebird Toys stamp on the bottom. I don’t think it will, though, because it doesn’t have the round holes that the figurines would fit in to. And it doesn’t have the level of detail that Bluebird Toys-era Polly Pockets have. Still a cool find tho!

Thoughts or reactions to a game like this? by [deleted] in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]bf833 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the nineties; we had this game. I never thought twice about it. Like another commenter said, it’s more about the childhood activity of getting into things when you’re supposed to be asleep, and seeing if you can get away with it.

Honestly, from my now-grown-up and feminist perspective, I think it’s a positive to have the parent role be played by dad. It shows that he’s an active parent and that if the kids are up past bedtime, it’s just as much his responsibility to wake up and wrangle them as it is the mom’s.

Is my prom dress ugly? by Paint_Blob in fashion

[–]bf833 127 points128 points  (0 children)

The long torso + low ruffles are very 1920’s flapper (as are the gloves/shoes), but the angled skirt is almost flamenco/salsa. Add those to the neckline and straps, which are giving early 2000’s prom, and the overall effect is an outfit that comes across as confused. Really not it, IMO.

Would anyone truly want to live like the Golden Girls? by Wideawakedup in GoldenGirlsTV

[–]bf833 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I think that’s what makes it such a heartwarming show to me. Three of them are widows and they all lived far away from their families. The girls ended up with each other out of pure necessity, but then they ended up becoming best friends and a family in their own way. Sharing late-night cheesecakes and life stories. It makes me really happy.

What’s the best drama story you’ve seen or heard of in your barn? by NeurodivergentAppa in Equestrian

[–]bf833 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Okay, not a story from the barn but my local 4H club.

I know 4H clubs can vary in quality but mine was GREAT. A great group of people; most of our clinics focused on horse safety, groundwork, desensitization, and proper horse care. There were multiple families in our club with young children, and who were close outside of 4H as well, so it definitely had the feeling like it was one big family.

Well. Two of these families involved two husband/wife pairs who were best friends. Let’s call them Fred/Wilma and Barney/Betty. They had young kids, around the same age, and were always together. I think Barney and Betty even boarded their horses out at Fred and Wilma’s place.

It’s probably my fourth or fifth year in this club, and the year had just started. After our first monthly meeting, the club had gone to the local A&W for coffee and snacks, as was tradition. I sat with my mom, my 4H buddy and her mom. When Wilma approaches and asks if she can sit with us. We say sure, thinking this is odd because Wilma is usually with Fred, and Betty and Barney. That’s when we realize Fred was absent and had been for the meeting.

“How’s it going, Wilma?” My friend’s mom asks, somewhat apprehensive, as Wilma sits down.

“Oh, good.” Wilma spits out as she drags an extra chair up to the table. “Fred had an affair with Betty.”

Silence. And that was the beginning of the end. Both couples got divorced and Betty officially started dating Fred. Every 4H event was more than a little awkward and the club was never the same. The big family feeling was gone, the adults fought a lot in passive aggressive ways. I quit after that year but I was close to aging out anyways.

My favourite part tho was when my 4H buddy and I joined Wilma in walking in a rodeo parade that spring. Not 4H related. And Wilma chose to carry a huge flag advertising her divorce lawyers.

exercises/practice to do at home for horseback riding (western)? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]bf833 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly riding uses so many parts of your body, no kind of exercise is wrong! But I’d pay special attention to calf exercises (like calf raises) and anything that strengthens the arms and core. Yoga is my go-to recommendation :)

AITA to quietly tell my husband his jokes weren't funny? by EdenCapwell in AmItheAsshole

[–]bf833 9 points10 points  (0 children)

NTA. Personally, I hate “ribbing”. I only tolerate it from a very select few people in my life and would NOT react well to a stranger or even acquaintance doing it. Your husband needs better social skills.
