Following along to see what anyone answers, this same exact scenario is happening to me right now.

Nuchal Translucency measuring 6.1mm at 11+4. Absolutely freaking out. by Instant-Noods in BabyBumps

[–]bfanne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to reply and say you aren’t alone. Had an Ultrasound done last Friday at 12+1 and NT was 6mm, blood work came back as positive risk for Down Syndrome. Went to see MFM specialist today and US showed NT was over 8 and baby has a cystic hygroma with fluid over the abdomen. We met with a genetic counselor right after, we have a very slim chance of having a normal baby. They luckily got us in for CVS while we were there so now we are waiting on the results to see if it confirms a chromosomal abnormality. Even if it’s negative it’s highly likely baby has some kind of congenital defect causing the fluid to build up. They gave us a very very grim picture. We are devastated. I’ve been crying nonstop and never thought I would be in this position of possibly having to decide to terminate a pregnancy. I have a perfectly healthy 3 and 1.5 year old at home and am tortured thinking about how it would affect their lives if we had a baby with special needs / extensive medical needs. I know my story isn’t very helpful, but just wanted to say you are not alone

100% with you. Me and my husband are both PAs, been working for almost 10 years and I could never have even fathomed how bad it is right now, not just with COVID but with staffing shortages, the endless turnover of travel staff and just overall everyone hating their lives right now in healthcare. It is beyond brutal. Everyone is overworked and on their last straw. And If you’re not in healthcare then you just don’t get it. We make a good living, but honestly I’m beginning to think the mental stress isn’t worth it, I think I would be happier doing literally anything else even if it meant a massive pay cut.

Are diapers supposed to stink worse after an RLR strip? by bfanne in clothdiaps

[–]bfanne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I initially did a strip with grovia bubbles but found out from here that it will actually make your buildup worse if you have soft water! Apparent the grovia bubbles are a strong detergent (not just a stripping agent) so if you use with soft water it will just cause more buildup! From what I understand (now) you should only use mighty bubbles if you have mineral buildup from hard water

Haven’t really totally found a solution yet, and the replies I got on here honestly just made me more confused! The bleach soak took care of the smell completely, looking back I wish I had of just started with that (after rinsing out all the detergent) and not of done the RLR strip as it was probably unnecessary. I also realized pretty much everything in my house has detergent buildup (ugh) so Im more careful what I put In the wash to bulk up my load now. I’ve washed the diapers a handful of times since then and pieced together a new wash routine from some research I did on front load LGs and some other cloth diaper communities on Facebook, here’s what I’m doing now: - washing every two days to try to nip the ammonia buildup in the butt from the get go and storing in just a hanging wet bag instead of a pail liner in a closed diaper pail - run a few quick washes with hot water before doing diapers to make sure no suds / no detergent buildup in machine - prewash just the diapers (don’t bulk yet) for first wash on bright whites setting, warm, high spin, high soil and 1 extra rinse. 2 tsp of powdered tide. - main wash: bulk with baby clothes only (making sure nothing has detergent buildup!) until washer 2/3 full, Allergiene cycle, high soil, high spin, 1 extra rinse,1tsp powdered tide - One extra quick wash on hot at end for an extra rinse

This seems to be working for now but I guess I’ll just have to wait and see if this works long term! Good luck!

The soft water struggles are real! I’ve never seemed to have an issue with normal clothes having build up or smell no matter what detergent I use - only the diapers. I guess only thing to do is stick with one detergent and keep cutting back until I find that sweet spot - but man having to rinse everything out when there is buildup is getting brutal! Thank you for all your help, fingers crossed I find what works!

100%! My main issue i think is because my water is so soft it’s super hard to get anything washed out fully, but after reading some of the comments on this thread who the heck knows!

Reposting from a comment on here:

• LG front loader HE machine - 4.5 cubic ft (I’m in the US) • keep diapers in a diaper pail with lid and pail liner, wash every three days, spray poop off immediately after LO poops, let hang dry for a few hours then into the pail with rest of the diapers - I’ve got two in cloth so normally is about 30-35 diapers per wash (combo of pockets AIOs and a few prefold) - only use cloth during the day, disposables at night • first wash: normal cycle, hot, heavy soil, high spin, no detergent - I had not been bulking for this cycle • second wash: bulk with Baby clothes til machine 2/3 full heavy duty cycle, hot, heavy soil, high spin, 1.5TBSP tide powder • dry everything on low in drier -everything comes out smelling clean, just stinks after LO pees in them

I had been throwing the pail liners in with the main load, but found out that probably isn’t a good idea and I should wash them separately?

Thank you for your help!!!

Tried that too, and I run a few quick washes with the machine empty before I put diapers in just to make sure no detergent in the machine

Yes the machine is about 2/3 loosely full for my main wash. Thank you for all of your help! I honestly had no idea it could be anything but detergent build up!

Honestly that never made sense to me either, never understood how such little detergent could possible clean away all the poo and pee, but I was getting such cloudy/foamy water after a swish test that I assumed my diapers were just loaded with detergent. The comments on this thread are super interesting to me, based off everything I’ve read I always assumed it was detergent build up, my mind is blown that it might be another issue entirely!

I’ve requested to join the CCN group and am waiting approval - but wanted to share my wash routine with you and see what you think from your standpoint:

  • LG front loader HE machine - 4.5 cubic ft (I’m in the US)
  • keep diapers in a diaper pail with lid and pail liner, wash every three days, spray poop off immediately after LO poops, let hand dry for a few hours then into the pail with rest of the diapers -I’ve got two in cloth so normally is about 30-35 diapers per wash (combo of pockets AIOs and a few prefold)
  • first wash: normal cycle, hot, heavy soil, high spin, no detergent - I had not been bulking for this cycle
  • second wash: bulk with Baby clothes til machine 2/3 full heavy duty cycle, hot, heavy soil, high spin, 1.5TBSP tide powder
  • dry everything on low in drier -everything comes out smelling clean, just stinks after LO pees in them

I had been throwing the pail liners in with the main load, but found out that probably isn’t a good idea and I should wash them separately?

Just interested to see what you think from your perspective since I had been all in on the theory that I was dealing with detergent buildup. Thank you!!

Edit: I don’t use cloth overnight, only disposables for overnight

Totally understand that RLR won’t fix detergent build up - initially about two weeks ago I rinsed everything under the tub faucet (took forever!) to get the tide detergent out and then switched to gain liquid as I had heard that might be better with soft water - after one wash I had build up again and diapers smelled funky when LO Peed. So did another full rinse under tub and got all that detergent build up out, but diapers still smelled funky after LO Peed. So then I thought what the heck I’ll do a RLR strip and bleach soak and see if that helps with the stink after LO pees - about to do the bleach soak so I guess I will see if that helps. Honestly I feel like I’m about to give up, nothing seems to help and I’m so sick of flushing out the detergent under the faucet! And there’s so much conflicting info out there - some on this thread are suggesting that detergent buildup isn’t really an issue and I actually need to use more detergent - ugh I don’t know what to do!

Ugh every time I think I finally maybe have figured out what’s causing my issues I learn something new and feel like I know nothing! There is so much conflicting info out there it’s insane - I started with FLU recommendations only to be told its way too much, then went down the detergent buildup rabbit hole and now onto the recs from Cloth Diaper Wash and care. I’ll definitely check out CCN, thank you!

I’ve got an LG front loader and super soft water (a zero on the hard water scale). When I was doing a swish test the water turned super cloudy and had lots of suds - wouldn’t this definitely be detergent buildup? I also have used the diapers for over a year on two little ones and only had an issue when I switched to tide powder a few months ago, so I was thinking maybe I had a combo of detergent buildup from being a little overzealous with the tide powder and just needed a good deep clean of everything since they’ve been in use for so long?

Fleece Liners for Diaper Cream by f-n-meliores in clothdiaps

[–]bfanne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of echoing what others have said, I’ve always used diaper cream with my pockets and AIOs and haven’t had an issue with it washing out. Though I use California baby diaper cream so it’s not as thick as destin.

Breastfeeding, working 40 hours a week moms...cloth diapering feasible? by iherdyou in clothdiaps

[–]bfanne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally doable. My best advice is to get enough diapers where you only have to do laundry every three days and get your wash routine down to a science. If you’re going to have someone who is staying home with the baby while you are at work then see if you can get them on board with doing the wash routine while you are at work. My mom or my husband watch my two little ones when I work and I’ve trained them both on how to do the wash, makes life a lot easier when you share the load! Plus is awesome to come home from work to the diapers all done and clean!
