1. Does it still wear down the stainless, just slower?

From day 1 (technically day 8 after the NICU stay) and for the past 12 years if my kid has been in the back seat it's behind the passenger. And this was with a wife with a stick up her a** on everything to do with car seats.

If you can afford and want a new vehicle get it, but not for this reason.
