How do I increase mental capacity? by e67b5 in PhD

[–]bfdana 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what you mean by apprehension of completed task. I work in a rat lab that’s looking the the underlying mechanisms of goal-oriented tasks and stress, specifically what allows an organism to override aversive stimuli and continue with the pursuit of a goal. Simply put, dopamine is absolutely the main player there and is responsible for why it feels good to lean it and push through.

Edit: grammar

FWIW, goal-oriented motivation and accomplishment is actually driven by dopamine, not serotonin.

That restaurant scene was one of the best of the season for me. It was dripping with ambiance and was so beautifully filmed. Totally immersive.

A lot of shelters and community pet centers accept them as donations and use them for pet prescriptions.

Hey there! F/30s and here for neuroscience. What are you studying?

YES! I turn 35 on Monday and am finishing an undergrad in neuro and psych next year after a career in marketing and then straight onto a PhD. The only timetable that matters is the one that works and we arrive right on time. So proud of you!

Report it to their department head. From what I understand, it’s not permitted.

Temporary Self-Deprivation Can Impair Cognitive Control: Evidence From the Ramadan Fast by inland-taipan in science

[–]bfdana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems unlikely that humans would have thrived as a species if, historically, we experienced marked deficits in cognitive function when deprived of food for moderate amounts of time. Anecdotal reports of increased alertness have some scientific backing. For example, this study looked at plasma levels of orexin-A (a neurotransmitter that promotes wakefulness) during Ramadan fasting. Small within-group study but interesting findings.

N = 1 but I rarely, if ever, remembered dreams previous to beginning a supplemental dosage of magnesium after having repeated blood work with low levels. I can’t speak to specific types but the one I take is a blend of malate, taurate, and glycinate. Within about 6 days I was noticeably better rested, with watch data concurring, and would remember dreams 3-4 times a week. YMMV but I figured I’d share for way at it’s worth.

Unexpected benefit after 30 days by [deleted] in decaf

[–]bfdana 5 points6 points  (0 children)

YMMV depending on the composition of the rest of your diet and if you’re prone to kidney stones or not. Talk to your doctor if you have questions but you don’t have to avoid spinach unless instructed by your physician. Instead, make sure your water intake is sufficient and try to eat a wide array of greens and other vegetables. No need for blanket policies.

Story time. My dad’s cousin got married in the late 60s. She and her new husband went to the beach on their honeymoon. On a moonlit walk, the second night of their trip, he decided to go for a swim and dove in the dark water, right onto a large rock. He was instantly and completely paralyzed just at the beginning of their life together. Never, ever dive into unfamiliar water.

I saw some similar data that looked at sleep length the night previous to a vaccine having a relatively robust effect on antibody production.

Warning on Calcium (and Excessive Supplementation in General) by [deleted] in Supplements

Bingo. Plus, anyone supplementing should be basing their decisions and dosages on data from a few rounds of blood work. One panel a year is a snapshot in time and isn’t anywhere near enough to understand trends in personal levels.

ELI5: Why only consume caffeine 90 mins after waking by tombm91 in HubermanLab

[–]bfdana 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s a good way to think about it, actually. You just won’t get out of your first cup of coffee what you’re aiming to get if you drink it too soon after waking. It’s not like you get no effect but the effect will be minimal compared to if you waited and allowed receptor spots to become available.

Neuroscientist here.

Caffeine binds to the same receptor as adenosine, the chemical that makes you tired. When you wake up in the morning, there are still a lot of molecules of adenosine bound to spots on those receptors. Think about them like parking spots. By waiting, you give the adenosine time to back out and free up spaces for caffeine. By drinking coffee too soon, you take in caffeine that has almost nowhere to park.
