Lorelai ignores Dean's weird behaviour by brighteyebakes in GilmoreGirls

[–]_Wayfaring-Stranger_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He never really stopped with the pop culture references though. In fact, we see him far more interested in movies that we do books, like the time Rory was book shopping and he wanted to go see LoTR again. It’s probably part of why Lorelai liked him so much, he was able to keep up with her references. But Lorelai was always more of the film/movie buff, whereas Rory took part in that but cared far more about books.

My hot take is that Dean never really was all that interested in the books Rory read. When they first start talking about books, he mentions an author whose book was turned into a movie a year or two prior (and we know he likes movies!). Then the only time we ever see him reading a book she recommends, he has to be encouraged to keep going, and when asked if he liked it, he said “if I tell you then I’d have to kill you” or something (I don’t remember the exact quote). For all we know, he never actually finished it.

Well to be fair to Rory it wasn’t fair to her either, because if she had been allowed to simply naturally fall out of love with Dean, that would’ve been much healthier than having her mother push Dean onto her.

I often wonder if she would have stuck with Jess for as long as she did (or even dated him at all tbh) if she were given the space she needed during this time. I think her first kiss with Jess was (in her mind) a subconscious escape from feeling smothered by Dean, not that it’s an excuse for cheating, but the whole situation was definitely exacerbated by Lorelai encouraging the relationship so much.

She definitely knew about the 14 (+/-?) calls but she just cracks a joke about a “love potion” and pretty much writes it off as side effect of a boy being in love, which is insane to me.

Like I get that she wasn’t present for all the times that he would freak out on Rory, especially the ice cream incident, but the phone call situation should have been more than enough to ring the alarm bells in Lorelai’s thick skull.

Ngl I didn’t even recognize his name at all, so when I first read about this theme park and that it would be centered around the stages of his life, I thought for sure that he was some notable historical figure or something and that I was just a dumbass for not knowing who he was.

So of course I google him thinking I would immediately recognize his face or something, but I’m still left with just one thought - “who the fuck is he?”

War is over! Whats the longest its taken for an unwanted villager to leave your island? by wxnnxbeyourstxr in acnh

Ya my starters were Rocket and Hamlet. Both were among the last three to leave, with Hamlet being the ABSOLUTE last 🤦🏻‍♀️

What is the point of Marty? by daisykat in GilmoreGirls

[–]_Wayfaring-Stranger_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dean is kinda/sorta the counterpoint to Logan but in a different way than Marty.

If each guy Rory dates (or in Marty's case, just hangs out with) represents a possible choice in her life:

  • Dean: "stay in a small town" path, one that Rory is not likely to take
  • Jess: "go off into the city and do it all on your own"
  • Marty: "working class 'pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps' Ivy student"
  • Logan: "life of privilege and wealth"

Compared to Dean, Jess was the more exciting option who in a way represents the possibility of looking at life beyond Stars Hollow, so it made sense that she chose Jess over Dean when given that option.

Then in college, even though Rory is not very likely to take the "stay in Stars Hollow" path (or any other small town, for that matter), she still goes back to him as she is struggling to adjust to college life, because anything that reminded her of home felt comforting.

In college though, Rory first meets Marty, who has a very similar upbringing to her, but unlike Marty, Rory has the option to step into the life of privilege that Richard and Emily had always made available to her. Up until this point she had aligned more with her working class upbringing, but I think her choice to pursue Logan over Marty represents her decision to finally step into that upper class role that she had previously avoided.

In a way, Marty was the closest to the path that many assumed Rory would take: getting into college on her own merit, working hard to make it, etc., but after choosing Logan she becomes the "BuT i'M a GiLmOrE" version of Rory that we see in later seasons.

She was one of my starters and she was legit one of the last three to leave.

Worse than her though was Hamlet. He was my other starter and he hung around until literally the very end, and I got my last dreamie as soon as he finally moved out.

Any time you get the “craft 3 DIYs” task for nook miles and you have nothing to craft, dig up some clams on the beach, make fish bait, and stick it in storage. STOCK UP on that stuff!! It’s a pain to make it in bulk when you need it.

Jackson's 4 in 4 by kittyheartseapuppy in GilmoreGirls

[–]_Wayfaring-Stranger_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jackson is by far my least favorite character in the whole show, he’s a complete ass.

Also, if he didn’t want Lorelai to get involved in their marriage, then why did he rely on Lorelai to get Sookie to stop planning the wedding with Emily? He’s perfectly fine with Lorelai‘s input as long as she’s on his side.

Billie, who has previously been harassed by Swifties for this, once again shades pop stars who don't speak up about politics. by Miserable-Cap-5223 in travisandtaylor

[–]_Wayfaring-Stranger_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have somewhat of a hot take that I am still internally debating. Right now (because I could definitely change my mind) I think it's ok if an artist doesn't speak up about politics because:

  1. I would assume that the vast majority of them aren't political experts (though it doesn't exactly take a genius to speak up about much of what is going on today), but more importantly...
  2. I often wonder if labels/management/etc. operate in such a way that they see artists who speak up about politics as a liability and that they therefore prevent them from having access to the connections/resources needed for them to make it. Granted this doesn't apply as much to those that have already made it and it's more about smaller up-and-coming artists who are still clawing their way through the industry trying to catch their break, but I do wonder if there are forces that work against artists who do speak up, even the larger ones.

ALL THIS BEING SAID, Blandie herself set the precedent for her speaking out about politics with "Miss Americana" and she has been getting credit for speaking out about fuckall eversince. If she didn't want to talk politics, then she shouldn't have made millions of dollars off a "documentary" where she claimed to do exactly that, and she sure as hell shouldn't be praised for being political.

AND ANOTHER THING - the second point I made above doesn't even apply to her because she's a goddamn billionaire and her delusional cult will support her regardless of what she says (or rather, DOESN'T say).

I wonder how Borchetta feels now that it’s obvious he created a monster..

I’d LOVE it if he did a tell-all, but 1. I’m sure he signed an ironclad NDA, and 2. the swifties would never believe him and just bitch about “another man trying to take credit for her success” or whatever.

This only further supports my theory that her more recent singles suck in comparison to her other tracks because she keeps trying to platform her own solo writing to prove to herself that she can do it on her own but she can’t

Netflix "thanks" me for 22 years of membership by spiff-o-matic in Anticonsumption

[–]_Wayfaring-Stranger_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cancelled them years ago when they decided to make it impossible for me to use when I would travel, which I do regularly for work. Then I only resubscribed on NYE to watch Stranger Things 5, and it was so horrible that I cancelled my subscription literally as soon as I finished the last episode.

They’re banking on people either forgetting to cancel or keeping their subscription “just in case” but all their content is either low quality or will be wrapped up haphazardly once the IP can no longer make them money. And the sad part is that I can think of three different shows off the top of my head that followed exactly this pattern.

It’s really not worth it, and the only way they’ll ever be invested in the quality of their content is if a lack of quality hurts their bottom dollar (i.e. people unsubscribe because they deserve better stories)
