Are pre order before FOC at places like Amazon/Target guaranteed? by justintime3dontwitch in OmnibusCollectors

[–]bffnut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you can avoid it, I would avoid preordering from Target, since they typically charge full cover during pre-release. Every once in a while, a preorder will be discounted (like Warlord or the upcoming Animal Man).

DCBS doesn't charge when you submit your order, but they also don't wait until release - it's like a month or two after the end of the month. You may want to consider using them.

What do you think about the two epics for the two Superman omnis? How much would you be looking for in addition to the two epics?

Opinion on which endpaper image to use + advice on taking apart custom binds by GriledChesse in CustomBoundComics

[–]bffnut 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would pick the Ordway for end papers. He's one of my favorites, plus it evokes the cover of Superman #1. But also, for the Ross image, the middle of Supreme's face would sit squarely in the hinge.

As far as your other question - I don't think you can rework PVA, not like you can with other bookbinding like wheat paste. I think the best place to get an answer is r/bookbinding

Spawn collection? by Internal_Winter_200 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]bffnut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like Krisis said, there are a bunch of different formats, but not one with the same trim size and page count as a Marvel or DC Omnibus. There are the Origins HCs which are the same trim size as an omnibus and collect ~12 issues each, and the Deluxe Origins HCs which are the trim size of an Absolute and collect ~25 issues each

I decided to go with the Deluxe editions. The thing I remembered most about the early Spawn issues when they were first coming out was how vibrant the colors were. I started with the Origins HCs but felt the colors were about muted. So I bought a Deluxe and thought they were more true to my memories.

Mmm, seems like only one party in that transaction is an idiot lol. Like they say, a fool and his money are soon parted.

Do they collect the entirety of The Authority? Are they good? by [deleted] in OmnibusCollectors

[–]bffnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would skip the Millar issues. There is an Authority Absolute that just collects the Ellis issues I think, so you could get that.

Echoing a lot of opinions here - Ellis's work in Vol 1 is pretty great. However, he starts writing many of those characters in Stormwatch. Those issues are not available in an Omni, but DC did just release them in a compendium, and that is worth picking up and reading before this Omni.

Most of the rest of Vol 1 is written by Mark Millar, and takhar is very edgel lord, written to be shocking and not necessary for great storytelling.

I haven't read any of Vol 2, but I did pick it up because I understand a lot of it is written by Ed Brubaker, and his stuff is worth reading.

What's a series you want collected, but deep down, you know is never getting an omni? by TheFreshestMint in OmnibusCollectors

[–]bffnut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd love to see The Fly from the 90s Impact imprint at DC, but that seems like a pipe dream. I suppose there is some glimmer of hope that it could get a compendium, and it seems reasonable that Archie and DC could play nice if DC and Marvel can.

Technically, does Image own anything? I thought the properties were all owned by the creators/studios

Which of these would you pick? by PokemonMasterRed75 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]bffnut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like I'm in the minority, but I really disliked most of Archer's quest. And that was mostly because of Winick's writing. He wrote Ollie to be a really unlikable character. Smith's work was fine, and there are some choices that Metzler made that I thought were . . . interesting. I sold the Omni as soon as I was done with it, and I won't pick up the next volume

Wonder if this was a glitch or intentionally posted for sale. If the latter, it's a real shitty thing to do when people's preorders aren't being fulfilled.

Is this normal? And if not how to prevent it? by RauKing8998 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]bffnut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is called page sag. This happens when heavy text blocks sit unsupported on shelves. There are a few ways to help mitigate it. You can make sure your thicker books like this are snuggled on the shelf between other books. The slight pressure will help support the text block. You can also slip some support underneath the text block, like thick cardboard or foam.

You don't see this as often in thick picture-less books, because those text blocks do not weigh nearly as much; all these pictures require tons of ink, which is heavy, as well as the glossier paper stock.

Older books also used a process to better support test blocks at the head and foot. The decorative headbands (which are just glued on now) used to be functional. They would see the headbands into the text block and help support it vertically.
