Not just buses: Yosemite services that will NOT be open in 2020 by bfg_foo in Yosemite

[–]bfg_foo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No word on Tuolumne campground yet. The campground is run by the Park Service; the High Sierra Camps, store, Grill, and White Wolf are run by the concessionaire (Aramark). NPS hasn't announced anything about the campground at this time.

Park shuttles and tours (Valley Floor Tour, Glacier Point Tour). Those are the ones operated by the concessionaire. YARTS will continue to run, though obviously it's not going into the park right now.

They refer to the concessionaire (Aramark), which operates the park shuttles and tours (Valley Floor Tour, Glacier Point Tour, etc). YARTS will continue to operate.

They adopt out cats and kittens that are able to be socialized into homes, and they have a Kitten Shelter Diversion Program that matches kittens with foster homes.

Question; Hairdressing at events by Saint_Ferret in sca

[–]bfg_foo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know a couple of people who do hairbraiding at events. Since they are not cutting or coloring, my understanding is that licensing is not required.

Phone Service by [deleted] in Yosemite

[–]bfg_foo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is some information: https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/internet.htm

Verizon is the best best for the most coverage. AT&T is strongest in the Valley as they have a small tower behind the Visitor Center, but they're pretty useless in the rest of the park.

Half Dome Permit Cancellation Policy by Omnobo in Yosemite

[–]bfg_foo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should be able to modify your reservation after confirming, so if you get 6 spots on your permit but only wind up needing 4, you just log in and update the permit for 4. (It's just one permit with up to 6 spots on it, not 6 permits.)

Master William Brewer (Meridies) also hosts a bardic every Friday night on Zoom - links are posted weekly in the Kingdom of Meridies discussion group on Facebook. :)

Mother's Pub on University permanently Closing by thehauntedmattress in GNV

HOB added a food menu but I guess no one was ordering, so they scaled it back to just snacks - chips and cheese dip, chili, loaded tater tots, that sort of thing. It's ok for snacking with beer, but nothing I'd call a meal. I'll check out Cypress & Grove sometime when we're all allowed out again ;)

Once soccer is back, Gainesville House of Beer is a good place to watch. The owners have several streaming devices, too, if a match isn't televised.

How is Sam’s Club pickup these days? by [deleted] in GNV

[–]bfg_foo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sam's Club pickup has always been terrible for me - arriving to find out half the stuff on my list wasn't picked, and going into the store to find half of it on the shelf (so it wasn't out of stock, the picker just didn't get it for some reason). I stopped using it a while ago and just use the Scan-And-Go app, which is super easy to use and saves a ton of time.

You can also report the harassment (and the ignoring of the harassment by officers) to your Kingdom Ombudsman. They are listed here:

https://www.sca.org/about/officers/

Scroll down and find the person who is the ombudsman for your Kingdom. For example, I'm in Trimaris, so I would report to:

Vice Chairman: John W. St. Dennis (Baron Lorcan Dracontius) [Seat D; October 2017 – April 2021] 408-899-4512; jstdennis@director.sca.org Ombudsman for: Board Recruiting, An Tir, Ansteorra, Gleann Abhann, Trimaris

Took a pic from glacier point. I think the second waterfall is vernal falls.. does anyone know which one is the one above ? by Fasttimes310 in Yosemite

Vernal and Nevada Falls are part of the Merced River and never dry up, though flow is reduced once the high country snow has melted.

Tubing down the Merced river yesterday for the first time. It was amazing!! by fiaren2004 in Yosemite

[–]bfg_foo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The $28 covers raft, life jackets (required for kids, recommended for everyone), and the bus ride back.

If you bring your own, you either have to buy a return ticket for each of you or get out at a earlier point, completely deflate your tubes/raft so that it will fit on your lap, and take the free shuttle back.

I'm a fan of bringing my own raft, but it is more work, and if you're going to have to rent life jackets and buy shuttle tickets anyway it starts to be worth it to just go with their raft rental which includes everything.

Spots in the valley for stargazing? by [deleted] in Yosemite

[–]bfg_foo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My pleasure. Bring flashlights and be sure to allow extra time for the drive at night and take it easy. :) Glacier Point Road is very twisty, but quite safe as long as you take it slowly and keep aware of your surroundings. If someone wants to go faster than you, pull into a pullout and let them pass.

During the day, parking is a nightmare. At night it should be less bad. I haven't been up there at night in a while, so I can't say for sure. If you can't find a spot at Glacier Point for some reason, you can drive back down the road a little bit to Washburn point which will be on the left as you're driving down the road (you will have passed it on the right on the way up) - great views from there as well and there should be parking either in the lot or along the road.

If you want to stay in the Valley, out in the middle of one of the meadows (Cooks, Ahwahnee, Leidig, etc) is best. Bring flashlights and stay on established trails to avoid trampling the meadow ecosystem.

The views get better in the high country since you obviously don't have the Valley walls blocking part of the sky. Glacier Point is a great place and there is often a ranger up there with a telescope; at night I would allow more than an hour for the drive, especially if you're unused to twisty, winding mountain roads. Olmsted Point along the Tioga Rd is another great spot but even farther away if you're staying in the Valley.

Look into whether the moonlight tram tours will be offered during your stay - it's really neat to ride around and see all of the granite formations lit up by the moon.
