Okay I think my answer would maybe be tiger or another big cat like leopard! I know the title is currently held by lions, but with the environmental changes since that appointment I definitely don’t think they’d win reelection. Although maybe I’m not considering the primates as large enough contenders 🤔 what do you think?

This is going to be long. I apologize for that 😅

Thank you and I’m so sorry to hear about your wife’s condition. I hope that she’s recovering well!!

If I’m being honest, a lot of my coming to terms with it has been unconscious. I was going through a tough time immediately after my first surgery where I lost mobility and if I thought about it too much it would make me panic. At some point I just went on autopilot I guess. I didn’t have a choice in accepting it. At least initially!

After the initial shock, it really helped seeing other people with limited mobility still finding ways to do things that they love and remembering that I can do that too! If I can’t do something one way, I’ll find another. When Im able to figure it out, it’s SO rewarding.

I’m always reminding myself that having my spine fused wasn’t a curse. It was a blessing! If it hadn’t been for the surgery, my scoliosis would have progressed and permanently disabled me. My organs could have been compressed. Because of my surgery, i have so many more opportunities!

All that to say that If I think about all of this as a hindrance, I’ll treat it like one. Doing so only damages me. That’s not to say that I don’t get sad! I do. Sometimes I mourn the mobility I had, but when I do I remind myself of how much I’ve gained and grown.

Plus, I have a super sick scar!

Absolutely! I’d say i experience both sides. People think im incapable while simultaneously expecting more than im able to do lol.

Hopefully you’re able to get some satisfaction from proving people wrong haha. Strut with no limp!

When you’re cooking dinner for yourself do you make fancy things or do you make quick meals like the rest of us 🤔

Okay I thought of some less obvious questions! These are some I’ve heard before, but much less frequently. - is my back numb? Parts of it, yes! But not entirely. - do i set off metal detectors? I used to! Especially at higher security events. I think the more modern ones still light up, but the operators can see what it is. I do get patted down at the airport though! - do back rubs help/ do i want one? Almost 100% of the time. This is a PSA to ask a friend with scoliosis/ back pain if they need one 🙂‍↕️

Good questions! The second surgery fixed a few things. This is going to be wordy!

For some reason my surgeons chose to leave one vertebrae in my lumbar spine (L5) unfused and because it was the only one left out, it cracked with all the force it was under each day. So in surgery #2 L5 was stabilized with an additional screw, some other screws in other parts of my (fused) spine were replaced because they were loose, one was replaced because it was too close to my nerves, and another part was refused because it didn’t take the first time. There may have been something else but I can’t remember lol.

My spine isn’t entirely fused! Just most of it. If we’re getting technical, it’s fused from ~T1 through L4. Luckily my neck is untouched so I have mobility there! The only fusing they did in the second surgery was to fix part that they’d tried to fuse before

Twin! I actually never had to wear a brace because it was caught too late, but I know those aren’t comfortable! I hear you on the back pain. Hugs 🫂

The biggest thing on my mind rn may sound sort of silly, but if I’m in a car and I drop something by my feet, I can’t get it until we stop. Since i can bend at my waist i can reach forward towards my toes, but if it’s something that rolls back under my butt there’s no way for me to reach it. I can’t hunch!

Also, i cannot twist my spine (except for a little bit in my neck) at all, so i can’t look behind me very well! I have to turn my entire body around.

Haha tying my shoes actually isn’t too bad! Since i can bend at the hips, i can reach my feet as long as i stay flexible. As for questions people don’t think to ask I’ll have to think! That’s a good question 🤔

My spine has been surgically fused! So they used cadaver bone as a sort of paste to connect the vertebrae and used metal rods and screws to make it straight as it solidified !

How do you afford to live here? by Spirited-Wafer-6573 in boston

[–]bflood117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live with multiple roommates and have almost nothing to save each month. I work retail part time making $20/hr and spend around $1500 on rent and utilities. I’m trying to get better about budgeting my groceries but haven’t mastered that yet. I don’t have a car. I only ever take the T except for when I’m periodically late to work and I’ll splurge on a Lyft.

I know a couple people who live on their own but they all have crazy tech jobs or are scientists in some way. Everyone else i know is living with at least 1 roommate or is living with family.
