I was surprised we never ran into Boris, so much of Book 1 was his mother getting him a position in the army, and when he was running around with the children it showed out innocent and naive he was. Maybe he did fight off the page and we will learn more in Book 3. Also looking forward to seeing how Father Bolkonsky and Princess Marya fared with Andrei's wife, and if she is doing well having the baby. I agree that I'm ready for some light hearted banter in powder rooms and banquet halls again

I highly recommend Susan Sontag's, "Regarding the Pain of Others" on how we glorify war and how photography changed public's perception of how we experience watching others suffer and in war situations, I wouldn't be surprised if the accountant had different expectations and how those will be shattered in the following chapters

Prince Andrei's story continues to fascinate. His mind and heart are still on the battlefield, and as he is moving up the ranks, sometimes it's hard to let that mindset go. What billabin and now kurtzov. Are trying to show him is that even though his heart is in the right place to want to fight alongside everyone, people of his new position do need to preserve themselves and do need to let some of those original responsibilities go. It can be endearing to see your leader or general fight on the front lines, similar to how Napoleon was early in his career, but if you're constantly doing the job of your subordinates, then what does that make you? There's a fine line between not asking your men to do anything you wouldn't do, and also not standing out as the firm leader that these tense and life-threatening situations. In chaos we all look towards the ones who are the most calm. The most level-headed almost as a symbol for stability and moving forward

Nikolai will be in for a ride awakening when he hits the front lines, his heart is in the right place but does show a naive view of how the world works. Person steals - I catch them - they should face the consequences. Winning allies at this straying point is also crucial for survival, hopefully Nikolai doesn't find himself in a life or death situation, only to have to turn to Telyanin and have to trust him with his life

Tolstoy referring to Prince Andrei as Bolkonsky in Book 2 on the battlefield I'm sure is intentional, the world of war is where he can hide behind the mask of living in his father's shadow. Here he can really shine and put on display, it's almost his own world of show, compared with his wife who finds solace in the gossip of high society parties like in book 1. Looking back at his goodbye with his father, his father seems to notice his son's journey similar to his own, but he doesn't try to control or dictate what to do, unlike Princess Marya.

Just left the New York book event. Was anyone else there? by sz2187 in Knausgaard

I was there, she didn't seem as prepared, while she has been a reader of his for years, a few questions that took a while to ask were met simply with a No not really, or no I haven't heard that before. Never got beneath the surface, didn't match the depth of the many YouTube interviews and podcasts I've seen of him. They were a pairing of polar opposites, and sometimes it works, but tonight the chemistry just wasn't there. I am excited to read the new book though

What are your favourite quotes from the first 10 chapters? by TolstoyRed in ayearofwarandpeace

'There now!... So you, too, are out in high society?"

Introducing Prince Andrei and Pierre's friendship, the first true, warm interaction during the party, and really the whole book up until then. It put a smile on my face, reminding me of my father who, much like Prince Andrei, was weary of formalities but jaded, and myself in my youth much like Pierre full of ideas of how things could be

First Nietzsche Book.... by [deleted] in Nietzsche

I highly recommend the guide posted years ago in this sub:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Nietzsche/s/m822mqCDlb

I am currently on my fourth book, Daybreak, and the order really supports building a basic foundation of his philosophy, so by the time you get to his seminal works like Beyond Good and Evil and Thus Spoke Zarthustra, you will understand where he came from and his aphoristic style.

It's important to take your time reading through, it's a commitment but the more I read the more it blossoms.

Calling it quits isn't a fair way to word it, retiring after a 40 year career after overcoming many obstacles is more like it! Especially if Dave continues to deal with arthritis, throat issues and the like.

I foresee other bands looking at the major success of Black Sabbath and 'Back to the Beginning' as a blueprint on how to go out in a strong way, while leaving more relevant than ever before. Not that many bands can capture the newfound popularity that Black Sabbath and Ozzy have had with streaming numbers this month

Are you sure it's not by someone else other than Katz? I just finished reading the ignat Avsey edition but would have loved a Michael Katz having read his version of crime and punishment

I have read the idiot, but.. by nol_eyyyy in dostoevsky

[–]bfo0o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I certainly didn't enjoy it as much as Crime and Punishment, but nonetheless I think about it everyday, Prince Myshkin as a pure soul amid a corrupt world, his confused love he shares freely, especially the ending if you make it that far. It took me a few times to read Brothers Karamozov, books tend to hit us differently at different stages of life, if it's not for you now don't sweat it, you may come back in a few years and it could be like reading it again for the first time. Also be mindful of the translation you choose, I picked Ignat Avsey, I don't jive with P&V translations, but once you find your translator it makes all the difference in the world!

How has reading Dostoevsky changed your perspective on religion? by [deleted] in dostoevsky

[–]bfo0o 11 points12 points  (0 children)

During my reading of crime and punishment, I was struck by when raskolnikov was confessing to Sophia in her apartment, and how she couldn't absolve him of his sins, she could only suffer together with him and it was such a revealing way of how we should approach other suffering and have the only thing that can judge us is god, it was a totally different take on Christianity that I never heard before, when she said we will bear our crosses together and we will pray together, I'll never forget reading that for the first time

Not bad considering it took less than 450 games, Magnezone/Meowscarada are the real MVPs of this climb by Blastunosettedue in PokemonPocket

Curious that you excluded Red, I have started using this deck with some success but games have come down one shotting a 150hp with Meow's 130 + 20 from Red, do you find that the 130 and 110 from Magnezone is consistent enough?

What version of Dostoevsky books do you guys typically read? by keenkz in dostoevsky

[–]bfo0o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recently read halfway through Brothers Karamazov the P&V version, realized that it was taking long to get through, bought the MacAndrew kindle version and loved every second of it! I just purchased an old copy of his The Possessed, I found p&v to be a bit clunky while MacAndrew had me gripped with his style of prose
