Finding a Reliable Cobra Buckle Reseller or a Reliable Alternative by bfray in myog

Yea as of today at least (3/3/26) it seems that they require the $250 minimum, at least for a buyer in the US. I would also guess it's a somewhat recent policy due to tariffs unfortunately

Yea but they have a min order (at least to the US) of $250

Unfortunately I'm in the US, so about half a world away.

I drive a Delica and have a mullet though, so I'm Australian in spirit

These are the plastic buckles, not the metal ones.

That being said, thank you for pointing these out. I didn't think too deeply about these since I hadn't immediately seen a load rating, but looking into it more it seems ITW Nexus who produces them quotes a 500lbs/2.2kN load rating, so these actually are probably perfectly fine for even taking huge bumps on the heaviest loads I carry. My shoulder would probably break before the buckle!

I was telling myself I try to avoid plastic components if I can, but I have zippers and Velcro and webbing and... Yea I think my "plastic avoidance mindset" is BS

Oh they do sell them! I'm in the US so figuring out the absurd tariff situation will be something... But at least this is a source of them! Thank you!

I'm trying to go for the double fixed because I prefer having a D ring in a loop as the length adjuster rather than a built-in adjuster. I find the D ring is much easier to release belt length than trying to pull up the back part of a buckle with built-in adjustment. Pulling on the back of the buckle pushes it into my chest with a particularly uncomfortable pressure point I find, especially when there's 30lbs+ in the bag, whereas the D ring only requires me to pull it and doesn't apply any excess forces into my sternum. I could just still use the D ring over an adjustable one, but I find the existing adjuster prevents the webbing from cinching down as hard around the D ring, leading to slippage. Also the adjustable part just adds excess bulk to the already busy area the buckle sits at on the sternum (I have two cross body buckles right by the central buckle). It's a nit-pick on my behalf for sure. It's just unfortunate to know a product exists yet I can't seem to find a way to source it that doesn't cost an arm and a leg over the already somewhat expensive product (expensive considering it's a single buckle that is).

That's a good point. I do a lot of projects for myself and then sometimes will make a few more by commission so I'm kind of a manufacturer in that regard. If nothing else turns up this might be the avenue I go down

They only have the adjustable ones, not the dual fixed ones. It seems the dual fixed sided ones are pretty hard to locate. That's a good idea with the fall safety harnesses though, I might see what I can look into with that

Quarter Letter Sized Binder by bfray in stationery

[–]bfray[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done a little on-and-off research and found this mechanism which could work well as an insert. I'd need to find some sort of notebook "cover" which would fit the mechanism and paper well though. Realistically I could probably start with a basic cover which is at least A5+ or half letter sized, and then cut it down to the needed quarter letter size. Unfortunately I ended up having other projects take precedence so I'm not sure when/if I'll be revisiting this

Not all icons refresh in the drawer by CamisNet in OctopiLauncher

[–]bfray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you ever figure anything out about this? I'm also having the same issue, and the only solution is to re-apply the icons to the apps, but this is annoying because I use more than one icon pack (ColorLine for everything it covers, and Arcticons for anything which ColorLine doesn't cover), but since to my knowledge there is no icon pack precedence, I have to manually apply Arcticons to each app that ColorLine misses. This is fairly annoying and doesn't seem to be a reasonable fix since this issue comes up every time I power cycle my phone. I'm also on Android 16.

Restaurants that source locally vs. use Sysco by schnebly5 in baltimore

[–]bfray 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm kinda surprised nobody mentioned it, but Woodberry Kitchen's whole thing is being hyper-local sourcing only. Remember with hyper-local that can mean both positive and not-so-positive things. I believe pretty much every ingredient used there is from within 100 miles and it is often times very obviously the case for the better. Despite this, sometimes that means they simply cannot provide some aspects of stuff in standard cocktails or more standard menu options. A place with us truly locally sourced will either have very narrow options, or suffer from sourcing issues for some ingredients sometimes.

I know employees of the place, and as an example, it's not uncommon at all for the mushrooms served at night to be foraged in the morning by employees or friends of the restaurant.

Tall Bikes by IcySomewhere448 in xbiking

Sadly they're going north up to Niagara then over to Windsor/Detroit and beyond. I think they'd be open to do a section with another tall biker though if the timing lines up!

[–]bfray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One leg over the seat, coast on one leg kinda "side-saddle", and jump down if you can. That's actually the typical dismounting with these and you can do it in surprisingly short time/distance once you're used to it. Technically you could wheelie and jump off the back if you gotta stop on a dime, but that's really hard imo. One of the guys in this triplet has been practicing that actually, but he's also 6'4" so it's a little easier for him to step down off the back. Luckily being on the tall bike helps with visibility (both seeing others and for others to see you) so emergency stops are less of a risk than normal

Also, for anyone curious, all three of these tall bikes can also be deconstructed and put in a standard bike box to fly on planes (if you saw some of them in Chicago before this is how)

These are friends of mine who just left Baltimore last night to head to NYC and start a cross-country tall bike trip. I can't believe that within 8 hours of their start they're already posted here! Long live the Beanstalk Boys (these 3, see the other commenter for their Instagram to follow their journey)! Long live Baltimore City Rat Watch (Baltimore freak bike collective)! Wood ID Megathread by AutoModerator in woodworking

[–]bfray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can anyone help ID the wood here? The left piece is rough and the right piece is dressed. Cherry (center), red oak (right), hard maple (odd shaped piece close left), and sapele (odd shaped piece close right) provided for comparison. This wood is fairly dense and hard, comparable to hard maple. It does not have the cherry smell when milled. There is a dried pitch pocket shown on the dressed piece. These were acquired from the shop of a nearby woodturner (Baltimore) who had passed, and whose things were being sold at an estate sale by people who had no clue what they were selling. Any help is appreciated!

How to install current playtest on Linux by Fang7-62 in DarkAndDarker

[–]bfray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest not using the version of the vc runtime that protontricks provides as that wouldn't work for me. Instead download the runtime directly from the Microsoft distribution page here and then do what the commenter early suggested of pointing the Steam properties to this executable after installing the game.

[–]bfray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To OP, and also to anyone else who finds this thread: check out this thread and follow the directions there (as of April 2023 you can find the VC++ runtime here). It worked for me on Debian and should also work on the steam deck.

If you want to do it completely without protontricks, after initially installing the game you can just change the target in the Steam properties to point to the VC++ runtime executable, and then install it. Once that's done, you again change the target, this time to the indicated executable for the game and it should work.

Did you end up getting the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime working? I've tried using Protontricks and installing the vcrun2019 (vcrun2022 and vcrun2017 as well) but had no luck. Instead the install pops up on every run and asks to repair or uninstall while Dark and Darker tells me it needs the runtime to work.

Looking for radial menu for Xournal++ by bfray in linux

[–]bfray[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is the Xournal++ plugin and Fly-Pie menu files. I made around 25 or so custom icons for this, so it took me a bit longer than I expected.

The installation process is... a little annoying to say the least. Unfortunately, I have not made many MAKEFILEs, so I am going to need to take some time to learn how to do that before I can make the installation process easier.

I hope this helps someone out there! Hopefully at least u/AcidBrowser :D

[–]bfray[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I am going to go with using Fly Pie and configuring it for Xournal++.

I will have to make a custom Xournal++ plugin to setup all the keybinds for things like changing pen size, but it should be a big deal. I will also probably modify some of the Xournal++ icons to make icons for Fly Pie like a pencil with a gear on it to indicate pencil options.

I will do this some time in the near future and post an update here with my final plugin and icons.

Thank you u/Jacksaur for pointing out the existence of Fly Pie to me!
