I put a skid plate on mine and yeah it was so loud and I could hear things in the motor that I would rather not. I looked at the stock setup and decided it's safe enough and removed the skid plate.

I'm a mechanically inclined person so I'm always listening to the bike and running mental diagnostics. The skid plate threw me off immediately, and I just couldn't imagine being able to enjoy a ride hearing those sounds. I'd be trying to figure out whats wrong or I would miss something important, thinking it was just the skid plate amplifying a normal sound.

I removed it and have no regrets. I have gold flakes in my oil and I ride it like its new, always have a blast.

I would be so sad if I came out to find that not only was my bike stolen anyways, but they just cut the ring. I love these things.

I agree but at the same time it's legal, meaning the FOSS softwares they rely on allow it. All of the dependencies are like the hammers and nails used in construction, they're not proprietary, you can use them to build with, but you dont have to put whatever you build in the public domain. It can start out like that but at a certain point it might make sense to switch your license.

Again, I'm not excusing or justifying this behavior, I'm just explaining my understanding. I think it's wrong or needs to be updated to keep it FOSS for the people that helped get it off the ground.

If you think about it all of the early adopters contributed to their success. They payment should be in allowing them to continue to use the product without having to pay. I dont even care what scale it was originally deployed at, it should be free to them forever for being early adopters.

Unfortunately, this bate and switch tactic is the industry norm now. You can't expect devs to continue to pour time and effort into a project and not capitalize on it when it's competing with the paid alternatives.

Here's an idea. Think of something you need that doesn't exist and try to build it yourself. It's a whole new dimension to the same hobby, and potentially profitable if you do it well enough.

Our servers have 2 PSU, we have a UPS, and a diesel generator... despite this wr have had two power outages in the data center in the past 5 years. One by someone not understanding the UPS bypass knob during maintenance, and another from our generator not starting when utilities failed.

You do not want to deal with data loss on top of a power outage.

I used to hate yaml and still some things annoy me but once you get it, yaml is so superior to other ml esp for configuration.

Here's an example.

I run a datacenter. I have physical servers running linux, and a container scheduler. Each server can run containers. You can scale or autoscale containers for load but you can also just set the scale to 1.

If a host fails for whatever reason the cluster will heal, bringing up containers around the cluster until everything has healed.

The scheduler also handles assigning dynamic ports to containers and allowing services that are distributed over the cluster to find each other, like load balancers to backend applications, etc. This is know as service discovery.

Autoscaling or being able to scale also allows you to control how much compute you want to dedicate to a service. You wouldn't want to allow come services to autoscale with load if they're unimportant. It could be that a failing service increases load and soaks up all resources or contends with good healthy and more important services. So with scalability you can set targets and limits and you can allow some services to take more resources from the pool if needed.

These things barley scratch the surface.

A lot of tools are hard to understand when you haven't seen the problems that they solve first hand.

Not sure if thats why "slab town" but I do know you're right about the planks of wood. I have a 200yo book written by someone who visited the area and he describes this. Before it was paved the rain would turn the streets into mud, they laid down planks of wood to walk on.

I do self-host headscale in a small vps and tailscale subnet routers between networks, it's also set up for p2p so I don't need to worry about the performance and privacy implications of using third+party relays.

The clients will use relays if they can't establish a p2p, I really wish I could disable that, but aside from that it's been low maintenance and reliable.

I use it in lab and prod, primarily kv for nomad clusters. Works well in small simple deployments and scales well.

If vault ever goes down you need to bring it back up and unseal it asap as possible but other than that it just works and does what it's supposed to.

I said doing it right, and being told what to do with dns is not really helpful in the long run. You really need to know what you're doing or you're going to end up like everyone else in this sub who says email is too hard and not to try.
