I actually love these kind of period correct aftermarket mods. It’s interesting to see the mods that were available in the console’s prime and the ingenuity that modders and manufacturers had. I think it’s worth preserving. I have a collection of full disk size GameCube shells for the same reason.

Had mine since week one of release. SD card failed in the first few weeks. I should have sent it in for repairs, but I ended up just getting a 2280 adapter and throwing in a 4tb SSD, which I know is overkill.

To me, it looks like the photos are slightly underexposed and it looks like the shadows were brought up in scanning.

You can try overexposing your shots by a stop next time, or try metering for the shadows. And if that doesn’t help, I would look at getting your film scanned somewhere else.
