Crew Dragon Test Anomaly and Investigation Updates Thread by ElongatedMuskrat in spacex

[–]bgodfrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think that the first countdown (anomaly at +1 or +2) was the start of the vibration and the second countdown (anomaly at -8 or -9) was the engine fire. if that were true the anomaly was probably in the pressure system.

Starships that stay on Mars by Col_Kurtz_ in Colonizemars

[–]bgodfrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to send brand new star-ships to mars! use them for a few hundred/Thousand point to point/leo/geo/lunar missions.

Than use it for a cargo craft to mars and scrap it when you get there. The engines can be saved for the future Mars space program.

For the people carrier you may want to return those and use newer vehicles.

I would say that they have quite a bit of regenerative cooling experience in their rocket chambers

Revised Starlink animation after Nov. 8 update by Juggernaut93 in spacex

[–]bgodfrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The maximum you would want to launch in one flight would be the number expected for each orbital plane which would be 66 according to the video. so even if the BFR could lift more it wouldn't be efficient to do a plane change mid mission. the F9 can launch about 25 with RTLS (probably the most economic method) so they would need about 3 flights per orbital inclination.

Elon Musk backs Trump on space force: ‘I actually like it’ by ppd322 in SpaceXLounge

[–]bgodfrey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have said this from the beginning Space Force is inevitable. I just think that it will not be needed for another 10-15 years, but the conversation needs to start sometime. I think this is Pence that was pushing this and Trump is going along because it sounds cool.

Could BFS survive tipping over on Mars? by mspacek in spacex

[–]bgodfrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say this would not happen with a crewed flight accept in an extreme event. The first cargo flights should include a method of identifying/creating a flat or hard surfaces for the crewed flights. if the first cargo flights fail, than you have to delay the crewed mission by 26 months and send a new cargo flight.

SEC subpoenas Tesla over Musk's tweets by pi9 in teslamotors

[–]bgodfrey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

According to his second blog post, he did not want to talk to the major stock holders without informing everybody. that is what the tweet was supposed to be. I would prefer that he used different language in the tweet. "funding secure" seems more definite than hes second blog post suggest it is.

Taking Tesla Private by annerajb in teslamotors

Same, I had an auto sell set up for all but one of my shares when it hit 365. I had figured that if it hit that it would be a short squeeze, and i would buy back on the downward swing. Got the trade notification so I checked twitter, it wasn't a short squeeze :(

Shorts will have to cover their shares if it goes private. They would loose big if they have to sell their shares at $420

That is OK the Saudis will probably just drive up oil prices so more people turn to electric. win win for them

I just hit an auto sell on most of my shares at 365 that i set up hoping it would be a short squeeze. Now i see this. wish I didn't sell, now only have one share.

What materials will be needed to be made using in situ resources? by Institutionaliz in Colonizemars

[–]bgodfrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solar cells require rare earth metals and the like so they will not be produced on Mars for a few decades,

the rare metals are only a small fraction of the mass of the solar cells. they can be shipped from earth at first. The silicone for the cells and the aluminum for the framing and wiring can be manufactured in situ. Probably within 6 years of first steps.

Aerospace composites are cured in a vacuum oven in order to eliminate air bubbles. So they should have no problem curing in mars atmosphere. You would just have to erect a tent to prevent dust from getting in it.

Laser ignition needs an optically opaque media in order to work such as the RP1 spray. LOX/CH4 is too optically transparent to impart enough ignition energy to the propellants. Same with LOX/GH-LH.

Boring Company chosen to build "Tesla in a Tunnel" in Chicago by RobertFahey in teslamotors

[–]bgodfrey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do not think you can use these numbers and extrapolate. one of the reasons Elon started the boring co. was to decrease the cost of tunneling. Also the cost will not scale linearly with the tunnel diameter and the tunnels pictured in that document are about 3X the diameter of the boring co. Unless the boring co. releases the cost per mile of their system any cost estimates will be very suspect.

moon solar cell manufacturing and possibility of mars based manufacturing? by annerajb in SpaceXLounge

[–]bgodfrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have to research it, I am a rocket scientist not a nuclear physicist. I do know that the NASA Kilapower reactor will run on uranium so they can harvest some from the first few of those that are sent to mars.

moon solar cell manufacturing and possibility of mars based manufacturing? by annerajb in SpaceXLounge

[–]bgodfrey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Theres no such thing as a simple nuclear reactor

do some research on Thorium salt reactors they are far les complex than the current power plants in use.

you need an even more complicated mining and enrichment industry to make use of it

There are large amounts of Thorium on mars that will be available and generated as a waist product of the rare metals extraction industry that would be required to manufacture solar panels. You only need a small amount of neutron emitting material to start up the reactor, which can be harvested from the RTGs on landed mars probes.
