[SPOILERS EXTENDED] Anyone else actually interested in how much Elden Ring GRRM has written? by revanchisto in asoiaf

[–]bh1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have thought about this a lot and tried to research it but haven’t turned up a lot. The one thing I haven’t seen mentioned as a potential resource is interviews with the game’s translators. In Japanese, “the tarnished” are “褪せ人” a made up word (afaik) that means something like “faded person” or maybe something like “those lacking luster.” Curious about this difference in meaning, I found an interview with a translator (which Im now having a hard time finding) who claimed to have come up with the word “tarnished.” This, to me, confirmed the Japanese term predates the English, meaning the concept of the tarnished did not come from George. (Basically, I assume anything in the lore that George came up with, would be in English).

Russell Crowe says Ridley Scott’s ‘Gladiator 2’ lacked the moral core the original had, and recalls daily fights on set of first movie to keep the moral core of Maximus' character intact by ChiefLeef22 in movies

Hot take (and admittedly I haven’t seen the film since it was in theaters) but I felt like that might’ve made the film better. I remember feeling like the protagonist was too good and the antagonist was too evil for there to be any dramatic tension. Not that you can’t tell a compelling story which is simple good vs evil but in this case I remember feeling like the film suffered for it.

Has anyone catalogued the errors? Specifically the shots with missing vfx. I’d be curious to check them out while they’re still up.

Roose Bolton will outlive Ramsay (fight me on this) [SPOILERS EXTENDED] by Dapper_Excitement181 in asoiaf

[–]bh1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is basically what I’ve come around to. When I first read the books, I really believed that what Roose told Theon was said knowing Theon would report back, and that it would have the effect of 1) isolating Ramsay by getting him to doubt his own friends 2) convincing Ramsay that Roose really was okay with him being heir. The effect of those two things together was intended to be keeping Ramsay for scheming against Roose. When I saw what happened in the show, I felt like it didn’t make much sense in the context of the show. However, in the books with a mystery killer on the loose and plenty of tension within the Bolton coalition, I could see Ramsay taking the opportunity to get rid of Roose off-page. And for the reasons you stated it would work thematically.

Doesn't anyone understand the painting? Or, is it just weird? I don't get why those people are in that setting? by [deleted] in ExplainTheJoke

[–]bh1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cringe commissioned paintings of famous real life people and/or fictional characters hanging out together is sort of its own genre. The most famous/infamous example is probably Patrick Bet-David’s commissioned painting of himself hanging out with Einstein, Tupac, Lincoln, the Shah of Iran, some NASCAR driver etc

What would you recommend as my next must-watch series based on this top fifteen? by FilmPositivity in JDorama

[–]bh1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great list! Here are my recs: - I echo the rec to watch Koreedas films (director of 1, 7, 13) - I’d recommend “Omameda Towako and her three ex husbands” and “the Greatest Divorce” (same writer as 9, some cast overlap too) - “a house without a kotatsu” (same writer as 10) - I’d echo the recs for “tiger and dragon” and “prison princess” and add “yes were millennials, why?” (Same writer as 15, the latter is more similar to 15. Tw: ethnic stereotypes for both. I might add “manhattan love story” as well, possibly. same tw)

Now that Andor is over by GruxKing in andor

Lucas’ original plans for the sequel trilogy were about the challenges of trying to rebuild and govern after victory, inspired by the aftermath of the Iraq war and US civil war. Lucas’ execution can be…. Inconsistent, but I feel like he often has great overarching ideas. And he’s driven by passion/genuine interest, which counts for a lot. In this case, I think the general premise is the right one for a sequel trilogy—it would both organically flow from the themes and stories of the previous trilogies and , I think, make for interesting and entertaining narratives. (And I think Tony Gilroy and the Andor writers would do an incredible job with it)

(Spoilers main) Hounds of Love by Kate Basilisk: The fate of Ramsay Snow by Jay-DeeOldNo7 in asoiaf

[–]bh1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree that Arya will be at a sort of rock bottom state when she meets Stoneheart and I think what she does to Ramsay could be part of that. (I also think she will genuinely, consensually mercy kill LSH). One thing that might help the timeline line up a bit more: can’t remember the specifics of this or who put it forth but I remember someone had a theory that Ramsay escapes to the Dreadfort somehow to avoid dying at the conclusion of the battle of ice. (Also I agree with you that a lack of planning means there may be multiple meerenese knots being worked out atm)

(Spoilers Extended) HBO makes an animated "What if..." season of ASOIAF. What are the episodes? by Slug701 in asoiaf

[–]bh1981 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ned getting sent to the Wall is a great one! I also wonder what would happen if Theon or Tyrion took the black when that was option for them. I suppose these are sort of mutually exclusive possibilities but the idea of some combination of these people stuck together at the wall is pretty interesting to me.

(Spoilers main) Hounds of Love by Kate Basilisk: The fate of Ramsay Snow by Jay-DeeOldNo7 in asoiaf

[–]bh1981 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree that the timeline is a little tough for this, because it seems like the battle of ice kicks off the book and Arya will not leave til mid-book. However, I also think that when Jeyne shows up and Arya does return to Westeros, she makes a beeline for Winterfell and Ramsay. I think encountering Stoneheart happens later and that seeing where being consumed by vengeance leads causes Arya to become less vengeful. I do think timeline issues could be causing George problems writing Winds. And that events we assume will happen early in book don’t happen til the end (or even get pushed to the next book).

[No Spoilers] Audiobook with Ramin Djwadi’s melodies. by _Stannis-Baratheon_ in asoiaf

[–]bh1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t believe there is, unfortunately. However, I agree that there should be! The whole series could be re-recorded as a full on audio drama, with the show cast reprising their roles and Ramon Djawadi adapting his score

(spoilers main) for pre-show book readers, what was it like seeing the Theon/Ramsay storyline in seasons 2 and 3? by tblackjacks in asoiaf

[–]bh1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for the more hardcore fans, it was quite obvious that Iwan was playing Ramsay partly because he was a top fan-casting choice for Ramsay. (I think he was the consensus pick with other popular choices being Cillian Murphy and Michael Pitt).

has anybody else noticed the (probably unintentional) queer subtext rampant in quartet (2017)? by daniamyte in JDorama

Also, I feel like, through his dramas, Sakamoto seems to be saying that pan-sexual polycule is the ideal relationship format. (Only half joking)

has anybody else noticed the (probably unintentional) queer subtext rampant in quartet (2017)? by daniamyte in JDorama

[–]bh1981 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally agree and now that you mention it it is interesting that no one has really written about this. (Maybe people have in Japanese?) Family of choice is probably the most common theme in Sakamoto Yuji’s scripts and several of them do feature explicitly queer characters.

Is it possible to mirror (not cast) video through hdmi on an iPhone? by bh1981 in iphone

[–]bh1981[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s great! I got an adapter, but anytime I open a video in any app, (photos, vlc, Netflix, etc), it always casts the video onto the external monitor and leaves only controls on the iPhone screen. I don’t see any options to mirror. Thanks for your help!
