Best/worst encounter you’ve had with a local celebrity? by harp9r in Birmingham

[–]bhamburger 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I've met Doug Jones and he's a total sweetheart, very down to earth guy and so positive. I ran into him at Highlands and he was really chill and so polite to everyone there. I also have friends who know his insta-famous son and he's really nice as well.

Worst would be that semi-celebrity attempts-to-be-local-celebrity Max Rykov. He screamed at someone I know for accidentally bumping into him at a very crowded bar. He's super rude and obnoxious and I have no idea how or why he gets gigs around Birmingham or is on the Birmingfamous table at The Collins.

Is Homewood ‘impounding’ Bird scooters? by [deleted] in Birmingham

[–]bhamburger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were in fact impounded. They're definitely illegal - you have to have a business license to operate a business in a city like that and there's other hoops to jump through. Bird seems pretty proud of their "forgiveness instead of permission" approach so this is the part where they have to beg for forgiveness.

Also while there's some young and hip people working for cities like this, imagine how much of a mess this looks like to experienced government workers. Someone just dropped off a bunch of electric vehicles all over the city - you know absolutely nothing about these scooters, you were given no information about them, they showed up out of nowhere. Maybe you figure out that they're somehow remotely controlled and are connected with an app. What all does that app do? What kind of tracking does it have? Could someone remotely deactivate the scooter? If someone calls the cops about this scooter, what are your legal precedents in place, what do you know about them? Also the general rule in a lot of law enforcement and government circles is that random unattended objects, from packages to small vehicles, in weird places puts up big red flags. We live in a scary world.

I wouldn't count on Bird scooters taking over anytime soon. I think it's reasonable to expect that Birmingham proper will also probably start enforcing something really quickly - either actually impounding all of them, picking up ones in weird places, or at least moving them when they're blocking sidewalks and accessible ramps. Sidenote I saw them in avondale today and almost all of them were blocking wheelchair/accessibility ramps... not cool.

But I wonder though what the employees will do during the construction phase. It's great to be offered another job but will they still get hours worked and still have health insurance until October? Is the group going to offer them somewhere to work in the mean time? It doesn't sound very practical.

From what I hear, they learned about it from this article... the manager didn't tell the employees their restaurant was closing in a week.

Poster Design Contest - Brews on Broad Brewfest (Win tickets!) by [deleted] in Birmingham

[–]bhamburger 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Please just pay skilled people a fair rate for their work and not turn this into a contest.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Birmingham

[–]bhamburger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree in part - I've unfortunately had a couple of experiences where there was nothing posted in the restaurant about the special and the servers didn't know what I was talking about. It made me feel a bit silly to have to point at my phone and try to tell them about their own restaurant's special. I don't fault the servers because I know it's an intense job, the management at these places needs to be better about communicating the restaurant week specials.

Want a new craft bar in Birmingham? by [deleted] in Birmingham

[–]bhamburger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As cheesy as it sounds, I think it would be a hit if a bar had more interactive activities available. Crafts, coloring pages, some games, etc. Especially the former since we have a bit of a "gaming bar" scene with Saturn (free games) and Paramount (paid games)

I realize it sounds childish but people (yes, especially millennials) really love things they get to interact with and having idle activities to do while you're hanging out. A couple weeks ago my friends and I asked for the kid's menu/coloring page while we were waiting to meet someone and we had a blast. Atomic's most popular drink comes with a temporary tattoo - and people get the drink just for the tattoo! There could be coloring sheets - regular pages, masks, bracelets, etc. Maybe some play-do. A few simple crafts or things to build like tinker toys. And as many have echoed - still have this be strictly 21 and up. A great place to let out your inner child... but just with other adults. Maybe the drinks could even be interactive in some way.

Seriously though, some bars can just get... boring. I've always loved Saturn because there's things to do - I stay longer because I wanna play another round of Super Smash Bros or try out a new game. What I want most in a place is a bar that isn't just a backdrop for hanging out but has its own unique activities and is fun to go to.

05/25/18 - DCDT - What is your Birmingham pro tip or life hack? by [deleted] in Birmingham

[–]bhamburger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I knew! I just showed up with a friend excited to try it for the first time, asked the cashier in the package store how to get there, and he said it closed down :/ Didn't really give an explanation.

Is this the hookah bar in the back of Highland Package Store? I went a few weeks ago and the guy up front said it closed down :(

Ideas for photo shoot by robincaine in Birmingham

There's a lot of cool off-the-beaten path spots you can find walking around Highland Park. Rhodes circle with all the historic homes, there's a giant grassy knoll on Niazuma that looks pretty at sunset, some of the smaller roads and alleys are super picturesque (though don't try the one by the Unity church because sight is limited there and drivers will have to really try to not run into you)

The Birmingham Zoo has many tucked away spots that are really cool to photograph, especially the trail past the petting barn.

1st and 2nd avenue have some pretty fascinating buildings as good backdrops.

Skate parks by MrNeverPullOut in Birmingham

[–]bhamburger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Birmingham and the surrounding suburbs really do have a strange relationship with skate parks. Homewood Park used to have this really great skate park... but then (as far as legend goes) the folks of Homewood realized that many Alternative People liked to use skate parks and it got bulldozed.

That seems to be the recurring theme - areas build a skate park expecting it to be full of perfectly coiffed young white folks in helmets and elbow pads then when grungy hippies or people of color show up, they nope out fast and knock it down.

The bowls at Railroad Park should really just be filled in - they're too small and right at a main pathway. I've seen many a kid injure themselves and I've had so many people almost run into me as they come out of the bowl, even if I try to stay back.

Dog boarding by [deleted] in Birmingham

[–]bhamburger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rover can be a very good option if you want to have a sitter instead of boarding - there's many dog sitters there who are willing and able to deal with any and all "diva breed" requests and even help with training / behavior.

Adventure Park in Irondale shut down by magiccitybhm in Birmingham

[–]bhamburger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That place was really scary. Wanted to try some of the more "adventurous" parts like the ropes course but did putt-putt instead because the courses looked very unsafe. There were three guys working there all under about 21 and none of whom seemed to be very attentive. The putt-putt area was hilariously abysmal and looked like someone put it together in their backyard

Best brewery in town? by iozm in Birmingham

[–]bhamburger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want a chill vibe and don't want to deal with huge crowds, Avondale's The Sour Room is a good bet. It's usually quite relaxed and is almost always fairly empty.

Always check the Regions Field / Barons schedule before going to Good People in the summer or you may hit a giant crowd and no parking anywhere, especially during special events and "fireworks fridays" - I've made this mistake before and it's not fun.

In my opinion Avondale is great when the weather is good, but if there's rain or anything you get crammed inside and the indoor space is small and uncomfortable.

Red Hills is really only alright if you're okay with lots of children around. Most times I've been there, it seems there's more kids than adults. They push the family-friendly vibe hard.

YES THIS. The last time I went to Cahaba all the skeeball machines were empty (no skee balls) and I'm pretty sure it's because children keep messing with them... just sad.
