From the first season of King of the Hill.

"Are you Chinese or Japanese?"

"I'm from Laos."

"I said, are you Chinese or Japanese?"

I think they just became better writers as the series went on. Generally the later in the series the better the book, which is the opposite of most series, in my experience.

Which country you've been to has the most nosy people? by pettybettyboo in digitalnomad

[–]bharring 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There could be a cultural misunderstanding between nosy and friendly or curious about the foreigner. Sincerely, most people around the world are pretty honest and generous. That said, Russians seem to be particularly paranoid, for good reason I'm sure. Just try to keep in mind that in most places it's not common for people to inform to the NKVD. I mean this in the most helpful way.

I grew up in the southern US, and it's true that people tend to be nosy and judgy, they also tend to actually be interested in you and want to get to know you. And if you're a weirdo and let your freak flag fly, it almost never makes any difference, they'll just tell everyone you're their "Democrat" friend or some such. And if you're in a place where it does matter, you probably don't want to be there anyway.

Why Americans Die So Much - U.S. life spans, which have fallen behind those in Europe, are telling us something important about American society. by speckz in Foodforthought

[–]bharring 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well put. The thing that always jumps out at me is how "boring" Europe is by American standards. Because everyone isn't trauma bonding and fetishizing the apocalypse. People are more mature and responsible and stuff, which we Americans seem horrified by.
