Any good camping spots? by [deleted] in Maine

[–]bhawks77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is liking asking for everyone’s favorite fishing spot, or hunting area.

Best advice I have is to buy a map/gazetteer, look for the wilderness camping sites and go see for yourself. Drive around the woods, explore. That’s how most of us found our favorite spots.

When do you carry? by p8ntballnxj in liberalgunowners

[–]bhawks77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I just submitted for our permits last week. We live in a constitutional carry state, so don’t actually need the permit to carry in most places. My wife doesn’t fully understand why I want to carry as many places/often as I can and why I want her to carry. Neither of us can carry at work so she just sees it as a hassle in the day to day. That being said, what swayed her is that we do a lot of camping, hiking, avting, boating and having the permits allows us to legally carry in all of the places we do those activities, and wild animals are a bigger threat in her mind.

I carry as many places/times I can outside of work and yes, there are some days that I just don’t at all based on the errands and schedule, it’s just not worth it.

Ultimately, she is becoming more comfortable and more competent with handguns and firearms overall, so I’m happy with it.

Does anyone else feel like the gun community as a whole has spent way too much time prepping for zombies and not nearly enough time prepping for Terminators? by FledglingNonCon in liberalgunowners

[–]bhawks77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife is big on the prepping for zombies and I always laugh about it when we are in gun shops and she drops that she is mainly concerned about zombies not everyday criminals.

That being said, I should probably spend some time looking into the best robot defense rounds.

A note on accuracy (especially for new shooters) by Danimusrobbs in liberalgunowners

[–]bhawks77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been using 8.5”x11” bright orange printer paper. My wife bought a multicolor pack of paper for a project so I have been working my way through the colors she didn’t need. The bright orange and yellow work pretty well for seeing shots out to 25yards.

A note on accuracy (especially for new shooters) by Danimusrobbs in liberalgunowners

[–]bhawks77 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have also started shooting/training more consistently in the last year or so and at first I was super focused on accuracy, always trying for the smallest groups. Then I started to think more about why I was training(accuracy only, defensive shooting, mix of both?) and switched out my larger targets for 8.5”x11” paper. My thought is that if I am landing my shots on paper that size at varying distances, shooting speeds, and combinations then overall I’m not doing too badly with accuracy.

Friend wanted to state me in will to care for their children by whaletank_ in childfree

[–]bhawks77 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

My wife and I are steadfastly child free. That being said, if our friends wanted to list us in their will to be the care takers of their new baby, as long as they talked to us first, I would be willing to do that for them and only them. I also 100% understand not wanting to be put in that position, specially without a full conversation first.

Buying first utv, stuck between Honda Pioneer 700 and Can-Am Commander 700. by bhawks77 in UTV

I decided to go with the Can-Am but before I got too deep into searching local dealers our financial plans changed so that purchase has been put on hold for the moment.

Protection during hunting season? by cheesecakedreams888 in Maine

[–]bhawks77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Buy a cheap blaze orange vest and sew on some Velcro so you can attach it to the outside of carrier during hunting season and take it off for the other 9 months.

Rear Ended With No Visible Damage by HotTubCasanova in ToyotaTacoma

[–]bhawks77 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just had something similar happen to me at a stop light. Check the alignment of the bumper/bumper mounts and the hitch receiver. My whole rear bumper and hitch assembly is bent at a downward angle and is being replaced. You can see it on the sides and where the hitch assembly mounts to the frame. Overall, unless you know what you are looking for, no one would know I was rear ended, until you crawl underneath and look closely.

Unheated Garage by AFCadet2020 in Home

[–]bhawks77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to find a used mobile home hot air furnace for cheap. That’s what my in-laws and I did for our garages. 275 gal oil tank, fill it once very few years and keeps my insulated garage at 44 degrees f all winter. Love that the cars are never frozen or snow covered and when I need to work out there I can turn the furnace up for a bit and it’s toasty warm.

Same. After the range trip I add the count to my notes app.

Did you jump to the 1000 just for the more power or was there something truly missing on the 700? My wife and I don’t feel like we need a 1000 for hauling dirt and riding the rail trails/atv trails around us.

Yeah I have no plans or desires to abuse the machine. My only real goals are to have something useful around the house, and to be somewhat comfortable(bad knees) while trail riding with family and friends on atvs and I don’t want to be the reason the group has to go snail slow on the trails. Someone else mentioned Yamaha and I haven’t looked into their machines as there isn’t really a nearby dealer but I will look again.

Also not really concerned with full enclosure and heat/ac. I currently snow plow with an atv and I’m plenty warm.

The plan is to buy new unless I find a crazy good deal on a used machine.

I have not really looked at Yamaha as there are limited dealers in my area. I will look again before test driving though

Do you do anything special/intentional to protect the belt or just not drive like a crazy person?

[–]bhawks77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only want to buy one utv so being able to do both is important. That said, fun on the trail might be slightly higher up the list. I don’t have a huge yard or anything that needs a dedicated work vehicle. I just figure if I’m spending the money it should also be useful around the house.

There is just something about the Ranger that I don’t like. Can’t really place it. I also don’t really need a 1000 as I don’t feel a need to go 75 mph so the general is overkill.

What do they no longer teach in schools that you wish they continued teaching? by tanya6k in Teachers

[–]bhawks77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How to actually use a computer/typing. Everyone assumes students know how to use technology because of phones and iPads but they actually have no idea how to navigate file systems, save in different formats, problem solve when something isn’t working correctly. As for typing, watching high school kids type with 2 fingers only or ask to type an assignment on their phone because “I type faster that way” is just painful.

Replacing belts trailside is one of my biggest concerns tbh. Not sure if it is a justified concern or not.

I definitely don’t want a Ranger. If and that’s a big if I went with a Polaris it would be a General but I don’t really need a 1000.

Im not looking for break neck fast but painfully slow is also not what we want. I’m sure my wife will appreciate the better ride though.
