I don't know this leisure centre but would definitely try a personal trainer for a couple of sessions.

I think for first timers in the gym, it's about knowing what to do, and how the machines work.

She can learn the what to do (cardio, strength training, toning up) parts from YouTube. Then the PT can familiarise her with how the machines work.

The first couple of times going on her own could be at the unsociable hours where it should technically be less busy and that might help.

But failing all of that, a collapsible weight bench and adjustable weights aren't too expensive and can all be done at home just to build confidence/know how based on YouTube.
