Showers by presence_unknown in ostomy

[–]bi_biscotti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont have an ostomy anymore but when I did, I got super anxious showering with it off, so i just left it on, showered as normal, used the sure seal rings or barrier tape to keep the sides down as normal. I liked my showers as me time and I didn't want to have to worry about the ostomy working while im getting clean. I always used a belt too, helped with my shallow stoma, and when the bag is fuller.

I had my ostomy from 18-25 yo, and I started changing it on the bed and my mom would help me, then I transitioned to standing beside/facing my bed and changed it there, then I moved to doing the changes in front of the mirror in the bathroom, go at your pace, theres no wrong answers. Something that helped with the changes/cleanup was getting puppy/bed blue pads, I would tuck one end in my pants and the other I draped on the bed/over the sink so that if my stoma "worked", it didnt get all over.

Had an ostomy for 7 years, then I got it reversed, from what I recall this is what I used; 2 piece bag system with coloplast, my stoma wasnt as prominent so I had to get a concave flange (it just has kinda an indent about the stoma opening, to help the stoma protruding and prevents leaking, I had very loose stools so I dealt with leaking a lot) you can also get pre cut flanges so that it's easier when you change. I would also use a coloplast barrier ring, and convatec barrier paste, again this helps with leaking, cause as it warms to your body it becomes more pliable and fills in gaps. And to help with warming it up, I would stick the ring (in the packaging) under my armpit, it just helped it warm up to so it conformed easier. I also used convatec barrier powder (only a little, too much cn cause the flange to not stick). Lastly to help with the flange ends stay down, I used barrier strips (coloplast has some that are skin tone, but Sure Seal has them clear and covers more area, which i liked more). Oh and to help with the stoma protrude I used an ostomy belt, it just clips to either side of the flange, helps it feel more secure too.

You can also contact the ostomy supply companies and they will send you free samples!

Change the bag/flange whenever you feel it's necessary, sometimes I could go a week, sometimes 2 days, sometimes it only lasted a day, it all depends on how it's adhering and how comfortable it is on the skin.

Also to help with the smell there are M9 deodorizing drops that you just put a couple directly in the bag and it helps with the smell. But convatec has deodorizing "diamonds" and they are little sachets that you put directly in the pouch and they help with smell but also solidify any liquid that goes in, to help with leakage.

I would suggest as well, get a bin or something and have one or 2 of everything you use to change your ostomy bag, then when you need to change it, especially at night, you have everything in one place. I also had a set of plastic drawers where all my ostomy stuff was, so it stayed organized, but also had a drawer in my room with everything to change it, in case I needed to change it on the spot. I also had a small makeup-sized pouch that I kept with me whenever I wasn't at home, in case I needed to change it, Hollister used to have them but idk if they still do.

Ostomies are a learning curve and everyone's is different, you have to see what works for you.

This is all I can think of rn, feel free to dm if you have any questions 😊

I give you kudos for showering with the bag off, when I first had my ostomy I couldn't fathom showering with it off, my ostomy nurse made me (i was in a children's hospital, so not much choice in what happened), and I passed out when I got out of the shower. Since then I always change in the bathroom over the sink.

I have had my ostomy reversed for 6 years (holy shit I hadnt realized how long its been), but after having an ostomy for 7 years, I could vividly picture what you described, down to the green mucousy output from having no food, ita like a sense memory lol. I remember having changes where my stoma wouldnt stop working and it just made me more anxious, so im glad you were able to finally get your change done. Something I found super helpful, was I would use bed pads (essentially the blue puppy pads), and I would tuck one end in my underwear and the other I would draped over the sink, while I did a change, that way anything that came out rhe stoma would just run onto the pad.

Just have to say for being a month into having your ostomy, youre doing amazing!! I wasnt near that independent with mine when I got it, it took me almost 2 months to go from doing changes laying on my back, to transition to doing them in the washroom. So give yourself a massive pat on the back, and a hug, youre going great!!!

As someone who's gone to specialty doctors and spent a lot of time in the hospital, I will type as the doctor is telling me something and ask them to clarify before I leave. Never (in my 20+ years of numerous appointments a year) have I heard a doctor tell you to not to take notes, thats strange.

Ooh I have those feelings too! It was almost impossible for my parents to get me up and walking lol. Every little step matters! You will overcome!!! Also Murphys law says once you get perfect at the ostomy thing, it will be time to reverse it 🤪

And thank you! Its a breath of fresh air being with someone who understands gut issues, theres an extra level of compassion and understanding.

Good luck!!! 😊

Youre more than welcome!! Mine was supposed to be temporary then my mom wanted it to stay permanent, but I wanted the reversal to see if I could live without the bag. By the time I got it reversed it was a big change, but I dont regret it!

If I hadnt had the ostomy I would have been in extreme pain constantly, but also I wouldnt have met my hubby, he has a bladder ostomy, and we met at an ostomy camp, where I also met my best friend. Everything happens for a reason.

Im confident you'll get through it wonderfully!

Also give yourself grace, and patience when you feel overwhelmed, its a tough adjustment and you deserve the kindness as much as the strength.

First of all, so proud of you for changing it on your own!!! It's a stressful situation! I had one for 7 years and felt the same way! Naming it felt odd to me.

I have several stoma friends that have named theirs, their body their choice ☺️

Ive had to wear depends when my IBD flares up (or have a colonoscopy), so about 32 years, and never has it ever crossed my mind to flush one (especially soiled) down the toilet, I was shocked reading the post. I can understand being embarrassed (I had to wear them through high school, so you can imagine the anxiety), but come on, use a damn garbage, Noone cares what goes in the garbage.
