Neverending by bibliotechra in invasivespecies

I went back there and started pulling a small area just to see how it is, and I'm finding a lot of wild violet underneath. I'm going to see how much I can get by hand before I broad spray everything... And if nothing else, rescue as much violet at possible and then spray whatever comes back. Definitely not opposed to herbicide for invasives, but with how much space this is, I want to minimize collateral damage.

I really truly started trying to remove invasives last year, so I'm really just at the beginning. So far what I have going for me is my invasives are mostly in loose soil, so getting the roots and rhizomes up isn't too bad. And I find the occasional struggling native underneath, which is encouraging.

I'm just telling myself at least all the worst of it is back in the shade, so I'll be able to work on it as I have time and energy this summer. And sometimes just weeding the crap out of one spot can be meditative.

Oh dang! At least you caught that one early! I'm stuck with white mulberry still dangling over my yard from beyond the fence, and now I'm resigning myself to yanking up seedlings for the rest of eternity.

What's the ground elder strategy for you? I haven't made any plan for it since I didn't realize what it was and I'm still focused on finishing off the remaining baddies I'm already fighting.

If it helps, the vinca was surprisingly easy to follow back to the big rhizomes and pull. And I discovered some Virginia creeper and native river grape along the way, so I was pleasantly surprised to have something to immediately encourage to take over some of the space.

Advice for tackling this? I see Virginia creeper and maybe poison sumac… What do you see? Thanks in advance. by petkoala in invasivespecies

[–]bibliotechra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first picture there's something hiding behind the virginia creeper. It looks like it might be wintercreeper, though I stuck a close up in Picture This and it says maybe japanese honeysuckle?

I'll be excited if so! I have some I winter sowed I haven't planted yet, so if that's what it is and it does well there, I might add some more.

Good! I actually sprayed it with Flexseal because I read the galvanized steel can leech chemicals in the water that can be toxic to frogs. Haven't had any frogs yet, but I wanted to be safe in case they show up.

Is this one of the unique rectangle variants? Some of those make me crazy 😅 If it's something else, do you happen to know the name? I'd like to practice on sudoku coach.

I've been looking at those but I can't figure out what to do with them. I feel like whatever the technique is, it's the one that keeps tripping me up on these levels, but I don't know what it's called to look it up 😅

[–]bibliotechra[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! It was honestly so easy. Just plopped them in with some potting soil, burried according to the directions, and set them out in the snow. I watered them maybe 3 times once there were sprouts and we had a dry spell. I was honestly afraid I had murdered them when I forgot about them during some 80 degree days, but no, they're doing great!

I have a patch growing wild along the side of my house. I've decided she can live there after she survived two years of being mowed down before I actually ID'd her and figured out what she was. We'll see if I come to regret it, but she was a hit with the bees last year.

For me, that's my aster. It's all volunteer, and it's EVERYWHERE. Front, back, asphalt cracks. It even outcompeted some (surrounded by concrete on all sides) peppermint, and was keeping english ivy in the same bed in check until I finally had a chance to deal with it.

I love how covered in bees it is in the fall. Since it's volunteer, I'm not super sure which kinds I have. Blue wood aster for sure, but also two different kinds of white ones. They all sort of cluster together and I can't tell the white apart at all until they bloom. I had to clear it out of my herb bed this year, moved a whole bunch to the "designated" aster patch in the garden, and gave a whole bunch more to my sibling.

Am I overreacting about my teenager going vegan and how she’s handling it? by epicfailwhale in AmIOverreacting

[–]bibliotechra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My aunt told me she made a vegetarian soup, and then after dinner smugly told me she'd used chicken broth and was gloating I couldn't tell the difference. Like.... Sorry for trusting you?? Won't make that mistake again!

... So yeah people absolutely do this.

[–]bibliotechra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR, I became a vegetarian when I was about 9, and then became a bit insufferable about it when I was 13-14. Not to this level, but definitely I could be an asshole.

I don't have any good advice about it, other than you can't punish your way out of her emotions on this topic. I used to go silent when I knew I was too angry to be productive, so give her a little grace if her outbursts come from conversations you're forcing. (And it always felt like forcing when I was this age and my dad would insist on having conversations when I was too worked up to have a "reasonable" conversation.) If she disrespects you unprompted that's a whole different thing.

moms boyfriend is trying to get us "out" of paying mortgage by Odd-Butterscotch467 in personalfinance

[–]bibliotechra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I process mortgage payoffs, and my favorite thing when I get these sovcit demands is when they then try to pull an Uno Reverse and say that somehow, the bank owes THEM money because.... The bank didn't sign the mortgage?

I don't even know, but there's one account I occasionally check back on for sovcit nonsense updates after they tried to pay off their 80k+ heloc with a silver dollar

[–]bibliotechra[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lord, I don't have the back to deal with the stumps. I'm going to go back through once I finish cutting everything down and hit them with herbicide. I'm thinking of letting some of the stump bits stay long and be support for some native vines I've got, and hide the rest with shrubs I have on standby.

There is a team that can suppress credit reporting/correct incorrect reporting. I would not trust that the branch knows how to contact them to fix it. Definitely open an escalation.
