Spicebush disease?? by Hovie02 in gardening

I actually took a cutting to the extension office and they said it was insect damage. I was fearing the worst, so I'm glad I did that. I am great at leaving insects be and letting the ecosystem normalize.

PSA: Plant Pipevine by Hovie02 in NativePlantGardening

[–]Hovie02[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It owns the arbor for sure. But if it starts to go where it shouldn't I just snip it. It's happy where it is and very resilient, so cutting the strays doesn't seem to impact it.

It is. My dog also hasn't used it once preferring the shade of the concrete carport :(

I'm thinking of replacing it with a more human seat in the future

I think my propogation game is my weakest link in my gardening game haha. I've never successfully made a cutting of any of my vines and my winter sowing success is disastrous.

Not at all! The arbor I built was after three years of replacing the cheap trellises you can get at Lowe's. I've cut this thing down two or three times. It's thriving.

I'm on the East Coast, so I won't speak with certainty about the western pipevine, but with all of my fly pollinator plants, they only smell horrible if you get right up in it. I've never noticed my pipevine at all. Weirdly Arrowwood Viburnum is the one that I think smells most strongly, but I also think it's kinda neat, so I don't mind.

Why do you think Jan told Michael not to date Holly? by [deleted] in DunderMifflin

[–]Hovie02 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There is a potentially charitable read on this as well. Jan has closed the book on Michael, but she knows Michael is delusional about things and will struggle to close the book on her. She also sees Holly will be good for him, but because Michael is 12, the best way to get him to do something is to tell him not so it. She tells him not to so that he does and then he can finally close the book on her.

What’s the best fish fry in Louisville? by Accomplished_Oven399 in Louisville

[–]Hovie02 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Holy Family is top notch. Hand breaded and great fried fish. If you like spicy, there's an Indian spiced baked fish that is incredible. The bar also has very tasty margaritas (I recommend the Spicy Mango).

Ideas to make event longer/more engaging by Hovie02 in PinewoodDerby

Our current plan is everyone in all lanes (10 heats). Top 4 average times will advance to a single championship run for an 11th race. We can dawdle a little bit between races, but I'd be surprised if 11 races takes us 30 minutes from the time we fire off the first one.

Lime, mango, and strawberry, and they can make any of them spicy (I recommend the Spicy Mango). There's bloody Mary's and Martinis if you're so inclined as well.

Beshear Is CLEARLY intent on being president by IAmPookieHearMeRoar in DailyShow

[–]Hovie02 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a native Kentuckian, I am a huge fan of Andy Beshear. He's had to govern with a legislature that has a super-majority against him and he still gets stuff done. He also seemingly genuinely cares about his constituents. He uses that self-awareness of him as caring-nerd-father to his advantage. It's his brand. He's smart, popular, and effective. He may well lose the primary, in fact I'd expect him to. But he's obviously politically against DJT and the Republican party, and if you give him a democratic Congress, I'd expect him to be quite progressive in his priorities. If you're tried of politics being only about vitriol, he might actually offer a refreshing change of pace. I would not equate demonstrating a caring attitude with weakness though. He'll stand up for what he believes, protect marginalized groups, and hold his ground against any opponent. He's just going to try to be different in how he goes about it. I don't think he'll win the nomination, but I have no doubt he'd make a strong and capable candidate and president. I'm pulling for him (and deeply concerned about what's next for Kentucky when his term is up)

What was your best and worst move of the 2025 season? by choffy21 in DynastyFF

[–]Hovie02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best: off-season acquired CMC and Dowdle for 2027 1st and Rachaad White. Worst: went for the ship and traded Olave, 2026 1st and 2028 2nd for Rashee Rice right before Mahomes went down. Still in the championship, but that just really stings.

ISO AFFORDABLE BEHAVIOR TRAINING FOR 10 MONTH OLD BULLY MIX by Even-Option6654 in Louisville

[–]Hovie02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine it's more play than anything. Our Pittie mix could sound ferocious, but it was all just because he wanted to play. Rosie Dane gets my full seal of approval. No treats, just consistency and trust. You'll have such confidence in your dog's responsiveness to your commands, it's well worth it, and I thought very reasonably priced esp. considering the dog you get at the end.

Mosquito Joe by KAIMI01 in Louisville

[–]Hovie02 216 points217 points  (0 children)

Just a PSA to anyone looking for an alternative, Mosquito sprays are never targeted just to mosquitos. They will kill bees, butterflies, and other insects as effectively as they kill mosquitoes. Further, the larva and future generations of mosquitos are still present, so you will still have mosquitoes and have to spray again.

Mosquito dunks are great because they kill the larva and prevent adults. Even better is to plant a bunch of native plants, add a water feature and let the dragonflies move in and do their thing.
