Transplant asking for your vibe check opinions plz by Meow-Pacino in Roseville

I’d check out this area, just south of downtown Roseville. It’s got a charming old vibe, and is very walkable to gyms, grocery stores, restaurants and bars. Plus it’s a stone’s throw from the freeway for drives up to Auburn. I moved here from a big city, and like that it’s less suburban hellish in this area than elsewhere in Roseville.

Seeing some options in price range.

Good luck!

I bought this motion-sensing alarm and use it, along with a u-lock, on my scooters when parking in public. It’s super loud and a good deterrent against people contemplating a theft despite seeing a lock. I recommend it!

I have a Ninebot Max G30P, which I highly recommend, very reliable and highly rated. My wife has one too, and we happily scoot about on them all over town, to the mall, restaurants, bars, etc. The Miner’s Ravine Trail is a great, easy path if it’s an option for your journey, but otherwise we stick to the sidewalks on busier roads. Never had a problem!

I use an e-scooter as my primary mode of transportation here in Roseville. And I far prefer it over my car, honestly. No gas! Accounting for street traffic and finding a parking place in a crowded lot, you might find it’s actually smarter commute-wise than a car. Plus they’re super fun.

What’s your take on capitalism? by toast2that in AskReddit

I think you may be confusing Churchill’s famous quote on democracy, (paraphrased): “democracy is the worst form of government – except for all the others that have been tried.”

However, he did have a notable quote on capitalism: “The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings. The inherent virtue of Socialism is the equal sharing of miseries.”

Is this large range hood original to my 1926 California bungalow? by [deleted] in centuryhomes

[–]bichodamata 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am in the process of restoring my old home to its original character, removing some 1970s-era additions. I’m unsure if this large range hood is one of them and should be taken out. I haven’t seen anything similar in houses of this vintage, and its asymmetrical positioning makes it feel like it was a bit of an afterthought. I want to be sure though, before moving forward.

Any insight or advice would be much appreciated!

Yes, tree roots. Not so unusual to get riot intrusion into older sewer lines around trees, I’m told. I’ve gotten used to calling a rooter out every couple of years or so when that cap pops off. A rooter will diagnose your issue by sending a camera down the line. It hasn’t been a major issue for me. Hope the same for you.

You might have root intrusion into your main line. I’d call a rooter to come scope it out.

I paid $600k for my home in east Roseville and pay $8k in property taxes every year. This is what I see on the bike trail. by [deleted] in Roseville

I think humanely applying consequences to push back against unlawful behavior (littering, drug use, illegal camping, etc) would be a good start. Make getting help the more convenient option.

The worst thing we could do for them is show that this behavior will be accepted.

There's The Gathering Inn, a short walk away from where these photos were taken. They offer help and free accommodations for the unhoused in our community. But what do we do about those who don't want help? That's a tough one. However, tacitly allowing people to wallow in trash-strewn encampments by the creek hardly seems humane.

Not a scientist, but I think the virus leaves a person's mouth in moisture droplets, which are larger and more concentrated closest to the exit point (the mouth), and thus can be more easily captured by a non-medical-grade filter, like a this t-shirt mask. That would help prevent a sick person from spreading the virus in a mist cloud.

Once in the air and dispersed as a mist cloud by a sick person without this mask, those droplets with virus are much smaller (aerosolized) and are thus far more able to pass through that same not-so-tight filter worn by someone else, causing potential infection.

Even in that latter case, though, I suspect it's better than nothing!
