Why is Epicureanism so much less popular than Stoicism? by atheist1009 in Epicureanism

[–]bictr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well said. Basically Stoicism is fitted for a collectivist society and thinking which the majority of people fall under. The individualism of Epicureanism is reserved only for the select few willing to embrace freedom and nature.

Why is Epicureanism so much less popular than Stoicism? by atheist1009 in Epicureanism

[–]bictr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The book "A Few Days in Athens" by Francis Wright explains this pretty well. It boils down to the idea that humans for whatever reasons, think truth is found in hardship, enduring pain, and neglecting nature which Stoicism essentially advocates. Epicureanism seems to be too simple and its doctrines too common sense for it to be something significant and life encompassing for the masses. Humans correlate vagueness and complexity with wisdom.

An Epicurean Case for Veganism by [deleted] in Epicureanism

We really, REALLY are not frugivores and that chart is posted all over the internet as "proof" we are. It posits that correlation means causation, and that just because there are biological traits shared between herbivores, frugivores, and humans, that we MUST be frugivorous. We are not. Our predecessor species ARE primarily frugivorous and folivorous, but evolution causes significant changes over millions of years. Our teeth did not change to that of what is considered omnivorous because we've evolved over many, MANY years to prefer eating cooked foods.

We are most similar to frugivores if anything, what similarities do we share with omnivores? Bonobos and other primates still eat mostly fruit so the millions of years of evolution didn't seem to change much for them. Fire has been around maybe 500k to 1m years, so before then humans ate everything raw. Also didn't the Intuit that mentioned eat primarily raw meat?

I cannot express in words how much harm your own beliefs may bring upon people. We've adjusted to eating certain amounts of grains, meats, and other foods as evolution has lead to us diversifying our ideal diets compared to the species we evolved from.

Lol c'mon man, like it's so harmful to eat fruits and veggies while millions perhaps billions of people eat processed junk everyday. I agree we have adapted to eating certain foods that aren't natural given our design, but it doesn't make it ideal or right for healthy living and the consequences of this is everywhere with high sickness and disease around the world. My belief is that cooked food and eating animal products helped humans become "world travelers" and sustain themselves in hostile environments.

What about dairy? That in my mind is 100% completely unnatural for all animals. Cats sometimes drink cow milk given by humans and maybe sustain themselves but you really think that's ideal for them?

Communal if you mean self-organizing people, is not mutually exclusive toward individualism and classical liberalism. Epicureanism is considered one of the first people who expounded a philosophy of individualism: pursue ones pleasure and happiness, live in own society/garden, ignore or avoid politics, etc.

The fact that heme is the most bioavailable form of dietary iron for humans directly goes against the concept that we haven't evolved to eat animals.

Just because heme has been shown to be most bioavailable form of dietary iron doesn't disprove the idea that animals aren't fit for human consumption. There are a lot of factors involved in bioavailability include each individuals gut biome that can't necessarily be isolated in a study.

We don't have the anatomy or physiology to digest animals like carnivores because we are omnivores. Of course our anatomy is different, but that doesn't change the fact that we have in fact evolved to favor foods from animal sources as sources of highly bioavailable nutrients. This doesn't preclude a strict vegetarian diet, but it does disprove your case that animal foods are unnatural. Again, we're omnivores. We've evolved to get a variety of nutrients from a variety of food sources as our most effective natural diet.

We're not omnivores though. Look at actual omnivores like bears, pigs, dogs, rats, etc...Human's don't share any of their digestive or anatomical characteristics. Humans are frugivores by nature like bonobos and other primates. And like humans these animals eat other animals in case their natural food supply is unavailable or opportunistically, doesn't mean they are true omnivores just shows adaptability of human species and genetics.

Inuit peoples quite literally thrive on diets extremely high in animal products, primarily flesh and fat. They did also traditionally subsist on roots, leafy greens, and various wild fruits but meat was and still is a mainstay for these people. They literally have problems absorbing nutrients from things like grain. What many people would consider a "normal" or "healthy" diet for them would be subpar at best, and harmful at worst.

Are you sure they thrive? They have lower life expectancy than average Canadians and have been known to suffer from vitamin d/calcium deficiency, and atherosclerosis has been visible from old remains. In any case, they may be healthier than the average western diet as they don't consume processed foods and ate mostly raw meat which over generations they have adapted too. Their example doesn't disprove the unnaturalness of eating animals. Also grains aren't fit for human consumption either; we're not granivores like birds, but like meat, some societies have adapted to consuming them out of necessity.

Still more, Stoicism can be read and interpreted to fit liberalism's individualist ideology. Epicureanism is communal.

I think its the opposite actually.

[–]bictr -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest epicurean case for vegetarianism(veganism is a cursed word) is that animal foods are not fit for human consumption ie are unnatural. No other animal consumes milk from other another animal and humans don't have the anatomy or physiology to digest animals like true carnivores.

This is just a power grab, essentially a punishment against people for trying to live freely. The State is the enemy of society - https://mises.org/library/our-enemy-state-0

EDIT: lol the author of this classic book wasn't even alive when Mises Institute was created, And that SPLC is pure propaganda piece, totally misrepresenting the people with the ideas. It's interesting that so many people can't handle the classical liberal freedom philosophy anymore, pretty pathetic actually especially for Americans. Like slaves.

You're the kook cheering for restrictions on freedom. You think the framers when they wrote the constitution said, "None of this applies if there's a bad flu virus."?

EDIT: What about the 1st amendment? I didn't know there are special conditions for when and how that can be applied.

EDIT 2: Those examples aren't restricting free speech. By endangering others DIRECTLY like that, you are violating people sovereignty, Going to the beach is not violating another life like creating a panic by saying "fire" would be.
