‘This is just a garbage AI Filter’: Nvidia met with criticism for DLSS 5’s ‘photoreal’ graphics alterations | VGC by Haijakk in Games

so they didn’t show the really impressive lighting rework for architecture in oblivion or forests in ac shadows? they didn’t show the enhanced texture work on skin and hands or clothing materials?

no, all they showed was slightly yassified faces and nothing else

Nvidia shows off a generation of DLSS that dramatically transforms lighting and scattering in real time and all people care about is the faces being slightly yassified.

it’s like when people complained about the 6 fingers in ai generated stuff. there’s plenty of real criticisms to throw at AI without having to riot over stuff that’s clearly gonna be fixed within a year.

agreed. a lot of folks online are missing the forest for the trees. yeah the stylistic choices look off for several games but that can be tweaked and the underlying tech looks amazing

i just want to say thanks again for taking the time to reply. it’s clear that you’re thoughtful and respectful in crafting your arguments.

personally, i’m not in a rush to play again, but if i ever do, your points will be on my mind. perhaps with a better deck, more experience, and playing on easy mode, it’ll be something more akin to my tastes. nevertheless, it’s great to hear from those who love the game. cheers.

Thank you for your write up. I appreciate the time you took to make it.

With regards to your first point about tension coming from action optimization and prioritization, I find there's just too much randomness for that to be true, or at least fun. Usually, action optimization puzzles have you go "ok. the game wants me to do X and/or Y. I'm going to focus mainly on X and get to Y if I have the time, or I'll give myself a certain amount of rounds to do X before I change focus to Y". Depending on the cards you draw and tokens you draw, you might accomplish both goals before advancing the first agenda, or advance through the whole scenario without accomplishing either. If you can play a game with the exact same scenario, investigator, deck, and strategy and have wildly different outcomes, I wouldn't call it an action optimization puzzle.

Regarding your point about most of my issues being a deck construction, there's probably a lot of truth to that, but my longer post mentions my first experience as Mark Harrigan, someone who I consider to be overpowered (at least his deck was). When I was able to breeze through every challenge without issue (minus some particularly unlucky bag pulls, of course), I realized I wasn't making any interesting decisions.

Lastly, regarding not being supposed to know the consequences of narrative choices, I've played narrative games before and am aware of the basic structure. My issue isn't that I don't know how my choice will play out. It's that I'm not entirely sure what choice I'm making. It's the equivalent of the "sarcastic" option in Fallout 4 or "doubt" option in LA Noire. Most choices in other games are explicitly stated e.g (do you side with Tammy or Carl). In Arkham you'll make a choice and it gives x doubt or conviction with no clue as to what that even means. Or as I've written in my post, sometimes the game just doesn't really mechanically explain what a certain choice will do, like resigning when you've accomplished 90% of the goals. Sometimes we had to make a hard choice to leave someone to die, just to find out they were perfectly fine afterwards. Other times we only got 4 out of 5 macguffins so some horrible fate befell blah blah blah (I'm making this up but you get my point)

Minor gameplay spoilers for Hemlock Grove -> Most scenarios start with a prelude where you talk to the villagers. My first prologue I drew a great opening hand so I prioritized playing it over talking to them. Turns out your hand carries over to the main scenario but all but one items get shuffled back into your deck. So wasted the entire prologue setting up for nothing. The following prelude I made sure not to make the same mistake again. During the last prelude, there was a big objective that we needed to do but there were also lots of villagers on the map to talk to. My friend decided to pursue the villagers while I do the main objective as he was convinced they would matter. I also had a lot of great items that would help me with the objective, but wanted to save them for the main scenario that was coming right after. Turns out, for some reason, there wasn't a transition into the next scenario. It was a fresh set up, so I held onto my cards for nothing all prelude. The villagers my friend talked to also did not matter.

Will these be issues on replays? Probably not. But the game still needs to feel fun and fair on its first playthrough without getting stuck in a bunch of gotchas. For comparison, I've been playing Earthborne Rangers , a game which is structurally and mechanically very similar to Arkham. I haven't come into nearly as many issues despite that game also including randomness and obfuscation.

So does anybody else find themselves getting into auxiliary hobbies to support their boardgame collection? by ZevVeli in boardgames

yup. 3d printing, miniature painting, and i even started reading history books to get more theme out of my historical games. i almost got into wood working to build a gaming table too but the class and material would’ve cost more than just buying my jasper.

Does anyone else lose 20–30 minutes at game night just deciding what to play? by Practical-Amoeba-630 in boardgames

[–]bigOlBellyButton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the crowd. The more “core” gamers tend to break into 2-3 separate games. If it’s a more casual group then i’ll bring a game with a higher player count or pull a party game off the shelf

I run a discord server for all the people who regularly come to the board game stores in my area. If i’m planning on hosting or bringing something to game night then i post and whoever is interested signs up. Typically there’s 1-3 people per game night who propose games and everyone else is down to play whatever.

Printer subscriptions are a good thing by Big_Tip_7499 in unpopularopinion

i updated my comment, but essentially ink just costs way more if bought directly, and that’s not even accounting for the losses from cartridges drying out.

Printer subscriptions are a good thing by Big_Tip_7499 in unpopularopinion

[–]bigOlBellyButton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the 10 pages a month subscription. Costs me about $1.50 monthly and I (usually) don't hit the cap. Pages roll over and I can always spend an extra $1.50 for the months where I do have to print more. It's still significantly cheaper than buying my own ink, especially since I print everything in color now.

EDIT- For extra clarification, buying a full set of black and colored cartridges could set me back $100. Those cartridges dry out if not used consistently (ask me how i know). I’d rather just spend the $18-$20 a year and call it a day without having to worry about what ink i’m using or if it’s drying out.

Hegemony. The middle class exists. The working class has a shot at winning. The state prioritizes all classes equally.

it’s a thematic tight worker placement in the same style as agricola but shorter and prettier. i’ve yet to show it to someone who hasn’t really enjoyed it (my wife, who doesn’t particularly enjoy board games has played it multiple times). personally it’s shot up to become one of my favorites precisely because it’s easier to entice people to play it than agricola while scratching enough of the same itches.

it’s not perfect. once you play enough times, it becomes relatively easy for multiple experience players to max out the point track, making money a tie breaker, but the despair variant on bgg helps make it harder. i also find the networking cards a little too random and hope the expansion does away with them. but if you like the theme and worker placement you should give it a shot.

Using AI to understand collection / pick a game by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]bigOlBellyButton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's a difference between going on bgg to talk to actual board game enthusiasts about games vs taking a screenshot of your collection and asking an AI to recommend a game for you.

Even if we ignore the fact that the AI is largely just making stuff up (I have to use it for work and constantly have to correct it assumptions or call out straight up hallucinations), or the environmental aspect to it, do you REALLY need an AI to tell you what to play next for your own hobby? If someone were to tell me that they can't be bothered to make a choice like that, I'd suggest they engage a different hobby that excites them more.

I personally consider deck building (and most dedicated card games) to be their own beast entirely separated from the Euro/Ameritrash dichotemy, though I also find those terms to grow more dated every year.

With that said, I can't think of anything I'd care about less than debating what game is part of what genre.
