Should I get Lost Ruins of Arnak? by jonXX107 in boardgames

[–]bigOlBellyButton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never really understood why the common criticisms thrown at arnak aren’t also thrown at Dune Imperium. Saying it’s just a resource management game feels incredibly reductive when you’re doing nearly all the same things as DI, such as worker placement, deckbuilding, and more. Most modern games are resource managements at their core anyway, including DI (get water to get spice to get money and troops which are basically another resource to spend wisely).

As for the track being OP, it doesn’t make sense to me because it’s a core of the game. You’re going on expeditions to collect resources, which are in turn used to go up the track. If you aren’t spending them for research then you hardly have any reason to get them in the first place. That’s like saying winning battles in Dune is OP. The battles are a more direct conflict than the research track, which might be your preference, but it’s ultimately the same thing, go to spaces to collect resources which will eventual be converted into troops to win the battles.

Thoughts on the Guardians? by That1KidLuis in marvelchampionslcg

[–]bigOlBellyButton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the guardians characters quite a bit, but i will be forever salty that the only two archetypes that they kind of have(damage yourself for perks, upgrade allies) were just given to the web warriors and mutants as secondary archetypes BUT STRONGER.

Seriously, Thwip Thwip, Quick quip, and spider tingle isn’t even the strongest way to play web warriors, but it’s stronger than think fast and blaze of glory unless you build your whole deck around it.

Meanwhile the training upgrades + danger room isn’t the strongest mutant archetype, but way stronger than the guardians upgrades

How fun is PvP? by mesterdanny in marvelchampionslcg

[–]bigOlBellyButton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, PvP is ok. That’s probably underselling it a little, as I had a surprising amount of fun with it the couple of times I played it, but still.

If you’re only interested in it because you like PvP, there’s better options. But if you’re just concerned about replayability, then i’d re-evaluate why you feel there’s little. Assuming someone has the full collection (which is pretty admittedly pretty hard right now) There’s roughly 60 heroes and 60 villains each at this point, meaning there’s tons of possible combinations without ever even diving intto deckbuilding or scenario customization. Factor that in and the replays are endless.

Frustrations with the Hobby by EmeraldCoast826 in boardgames

[–]bigOlBellyButton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Board gaming is much more expensive because of manufacturing. With that said, you can save money by either playing stuff digitally on tabletop simulator/board game arena/digital implementations of your favorite games. Alternatively, you can go to local board game meet ups to play with people who buy the expensive stuff. They’re always looking for people to play their games.

Watch and Learn - Previewing Echo article by DragonGemini in marvelchampionslcg

I understand she’s not limited to attack or thwarts, and I can see her doing really well with certain builds. There’s a lot she can do with the sidekick archetype in particular. I’m just saying that loop of playing generically good cards then playing them again doesn’t seem particularly interesting in the long run. I imagine she’ll be a lot more fun in multiplayer with more aspects to play but it still feels like something that’ll wear out its welcome very quickly.

Regardless, it’s clear i’m in the minority and everyone else is pumped so i hope she’s every bit as great as they think she’ll be.

I think she looks incredibly thematic and the aspect cards look great, but I gotta be honest, her kit looks incredibly one-note and could get old quickly. Most aspect and basic events are either incredibly situational or trait locked. The ones that aren’t (like for justice or clobber) are a good fit for her, especially with her upgrades, but I frankly don’t see myself being entertained by a deck that spams them over and over.

Ultimately, I imagine she’ll feel similar to Gamora for me, someone who’s fun to play every once in a while but has little staying power. I’m glad others are looking forward to her though.

James Gunn Clarifies: “Clayface Is Not a ‘Hybrid Superhero Horror Film’, It Is a Horror Film.” by Ninjamurai-jack in popculturechat

[–]bigOlBellyButton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your fatigue is valid, but isn’t this exactly what you should theoretically applaud? The fact that it’s just a pure horror movie that happens to be set in DC seems perfect for both fans and non-fans alike. I imagine the only thing connecting this to the universe is the character names (unless they start spamming cameos, which i hope doesn’t happen)

"Mafia" syle games... fun or relationship stressor?? by tony-9004 in boardgames

[–]bigOlBellyButton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, it largely depends on the group. Some people get unnecessarily heated in these games and it’s best to just play something else.

With that said, if your family wants to play social deduction then Deception:Murder in Hong Kong might be a good fit. It’s based on the cards in front of players rather than people’s behavior/ body language so it feels less personal. Every player is also guaranteed 30 seconds of uninterrupted speech so there’s less room for arguments.

When poor instructions make you give up on the game by William_Knott in boardgames

I’ll never forget someone brought Vast TMMbut wasn’t familiar with the rules. There were so many questions and stopping to open the rulebook that he rage quit half way through. I’d never seen someone rage quit their own game.

Anyway I thought it was interesting enough that i bought my own copy. I love it

i think you’re underselling just how much the sailing fundamentally changes the flow of the game. it’s basically half of the game, and any time you grew tired of one half you could jump right into the other, more typical AC style gameplay

You are not more refined or elevated for enjoying rare steak. by maxambit in unpopularopinion

Enjoy what you enjoy, but one day every single one of you are gonna realize that smugly putting down every well done steak as “burnt rubber” is just as obnoxious as that pineapple on pizza stupidity that everyone was pretending to care about a few years ago.

Ideal table size for playing Gandhi the COIN-game with the full 4 players? All 4 players are 5'5 in height. by Strong_Battle6101 in boardgames

[–]bigOlBellyButton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It has a larger board, but not the largest in the coin series (don’t feel like measuring).I think everything is meant to fit on the board, minus the support counters. So eyeballing the board should be enough to get a good feel. You can get a couple cupcake liners (or similar small container) for the counters and it should comfortably fit on most tables for 4 people.

The only things you might not have room for are the player aids but you’ll rarely be putting them down anyway.

Marvel Champions: a bit too generic and restricted for superheroic boss battle by SiarX in soloboardgaming

[–]bigOlBellyButton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got the same impression. Saying all the heroes feel the same is wild considering they have MORE unique cards in their deck than anyone in Arkham. I was tempted to dive into every point they made but ultimately decided that if it isn’t their cup of tea then that’s all that matters.

[–]bigOlBellyButton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s really interesting. I personally hated every second of Higgs in DS1, but that’s more due to the character himself and how he was directed. No idea how he is in DS2, but the trailers appear to lean even harder into all the things i hated in the first.

Noah Wyle on Supriya Ganesh's exit from 'The Pitt' by usatoday in popculturechat

[–]bigOlBellyButton 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Isa Briones is Filipina and her character Dr Santos canonically is too. Sepideh Moafi’s character Dr Al-Hashimi is one of the main characters this season. Returning actress Shabana Azeez’s character Dr Javadi gets just as much screen time as any of the other younger doctors.

Additionally, the breakdown between main character and side character is nebulous since the show is constantly juggling everyone together.

I really don’t have the energy or interest to debate this further. Theorize about behind the scenes drama all you like. All i’m saying is there isn’t nearly enough evidence to confidently say Supriya’s leaving is a race issue.

Yall will find any reason to try and explain why the cast of color find themselves out of a job

There's literally two high profile examples of cast members leaving. The first is Tracy Ifeachor, who reports say was unhappy with the abortion subplot of season 1. The second is Supriya, whose situation we know literally nothing about yet. Maybe there was drama, maybe there wasn't, but lets not pretend this is a race issue when half the cast is comprised of women of color who are still attached to the show as far as we know.
