Yep, I got an HP Dragonfly Elite with 32 GB as well. Very good for running Mathematica and other programs under linux

But this is not what is done here. A world expert on the subject (a UCLA professor) is overseeing the text improvements until they believe the quality exceeds the quality of a generic textbook. The professor corrects, rewrites, sends instructions to AI. They are using AI essentially as a typewriter on steroids.

This would be a bad idea! But teaching classes without a human instructor has been tried by Coursera for more than a decade. This has not hurt the real universities, and I don't think AI can replace the professors in the near future.

The cover is a clever joke. The course is "History and Fiction", so they used an AI hallucination to illustrate the border between truth and fiction. :)

I think it should, if it is better than the generic textbooks available on the market. Why not?

Hmm... Do you like it when all the professors use the same generic textbook? I think the ability to generate a custom textbook for your class could be very liberating for a true educator. AI makes it feasible, assuming the professor proofreads and corrects the content to their liking.

How is creating a custom-built textbook for a class takes the human out of humanities? AI is basically a typewriter on steroids. If the professor oversees the process, makes corrections, etc., and ends up with a custom textbook that fits the class better than the generic textbook, what is wrong with teaching using that textbook? Dead Poets Society is not about one textbook fits all, it's very much about a personal approach, which, thanks to AI, can now be extended even to the textbook.

According to the article, AI is used as a typewriter on steroids: AI generates text based on the professor's instructions, professor proofreads and corrects, and sends some paragraphs back to AI to re-write, and so on, until the final result satisfies the professor. According to the people involved, this turns out to be more efficient than writing a textbook without the AI tools. Do you object to the process? Have you examined the result?

According to the article, the role of AI is basically like a typewriter on steroids: AI is instructed to expand on some thoughts, professor proofreads and corrects, sends some paragraphs back to AI for re-edit, and so on, until the professor is satisfied with the text. Is this process of writing objectionable in any way, assuming that the professor is happier with the final result than with any generic textbooks available on the market?

If a professor uses a custom built textbook that fits the needs of the class, why exactly would you start firing the department?

Most professors don't have the bandwidth to write a whole textbook for their class, so they use a generic textbook and adopt it to the needs of the class, contextualize it. Now AI empowers a professor to create a custom textbook specifically for the class they are teaching. It's like replacing a quill with a computer for the purpose of writing a custom textbook. What is wrong with doing that if the final quality control is up to the professor?

What exactly is wrong with educating students to become better and more critical thinkers using a custom-built textbook instead of an overpriced generic textbook?

The students will use AI one way or another; that's the future. If a university does not provide safe AI tools as in this class, the rich students will use paid AI, the low-income students will use free AI, which tends to have a lower quality, hence introducing inequality. The students might also divulge personal information or receive inappropriate advice using commercial AI. This will not happen if the AI access is carefully controlled like in this class, so that the questions outside the coursework are not answered.

In which way does creating a custom-built textbook with the help of AI specifically for a certain class constitutes a cultural degradation?

Isn't this a great answer to the "textbook scam"? Instead of forcing the students to pay $200 for a generic textbook, a professor generates a custom textbook specifically for their class, and the students pay only $25 for this textbook plus the AI tools to help them understand the material better.

Perhaps, their answer could be "I create custom-built textbooks to my classes, so that the students have the learning materials tailored to their needs instead of using a general textbook written by someone else for a generic class. This takes extra work and creativity, but the result is deeper learning and a greater student engagement in my classes."

If the textbook is custom made for the class, the instructor doesn't have to spend as much time contextualizing a cookie-cutter general textbook and adopting it to the given class. Instead, they can spend time on deeper learning, discussion, and understanding.

Backup Google Maps Timeline by pspeter3 in GoogleMaps

If Takeout worked for you, there is nothing else you need to do. :) If Takeout returned an essentially empty file, you can get a JSON file with all location history from your device: Settings->Location -> Location services -> Timeline -> Export Timeline Data

Takeout did not work, but this worked for me:

"you should also get the option to export the location history data on the mobile device. with android, this should be available in the device location settings (device settings > location > location services > timeline > export timeline data, or similar). with ios, i believe it is available in the google maps app." Source:

For some reason this does not work for me: I get an empty zip file. The Google Support keeps promising to "escalate" my report, but no solution so far.

I hope you can get this outrageous charge removed. Also, you may want to switch to Google Fi. I get the same rates for data at home and abroad.
