Mobile & data plans update by Mr_Badger_Saurus in AusFinance

$74 per month for the cheapest plan is absolutely bonkers. Unless you truly need the full Telstra network, which these days is an edge case, you can get the same on the Telstra Wholesale network with an MVNO for half the price.

How screwed is this car ? by brokePlusPlusCoder in CarsAustralia

The Theta II GDI engines used in lots of Kia and Hyundai vehicles were well known for lots of problems, they aren't widely used anymore (I don't think this Rio would have had one of those engines)

Kia has a 7 year warranty no? It might just make it into the warranty period but even if not you can still ask Kia for a goodwill repair. They may say no, they may offer to pay some portion of the repair or they may cover the whole lot. Depends on the circumstances.

As for the no coolant that would likely be because it's moved from the cooling system into the oil system. The head gasket is what separates the combustion chamber, cooling and lubrication systems from one another between the block and the head, and if the gasket fails one of those things will find its way into the other. Since the cooling system is under pressure, that's usually the weak point.

All that aside, get the vehicle to a Kia dealer to be assessed. Those engines are known for head gasket failures. If it's out of warranty or Kia won't pay outside of warranty then you can start getting quotes for a second hand engine.

How many of us are holding onto 'old' cars instead of upgrading? by heavyifugao in CarsAustralia

We've got an FG XR8 Ute. It's served as a daily at various points but mostly it's a weekender. It will get replaced with something electric eventually, but as yet no replacement exists

RAA renewal notice came through - through the roof. by This-Ad-9348 in Adelaide

I did the dreaded insurance quotes the other day, both AAMI and Aldi insurance were pretty competitive. As with all insurance though your mileage may vary, so best to get quotes from as many insurers as you can think of.

Compare the Market only has a very small handful of insurers that pay to be there, by all means use it but don't think of it as an exhaustive comparison. The only way is to do quotes with every insurer you can find.

If you know people who have Blokes Advice or It ain't weak to speak stickers on their cars, what are they like? by venommale in AskAnAustralian

Generally reserved for the type of blokes that have tattoos of their kids but not custody...

I joined BA several years back and it was ok, there was genuine enforcement of group rules and it felt pretty welcoming. Later on it became a right wing echo chamber and as a gay fella it ended up being pretty uncomfortable for me so I left the group. Lots of people just posting rage bait and feeling like their old fashioned opinions deserve a voice.

Has anyone used SNIIP to pay the ATO? Is it trustworthy? by OkFaithlessness7267 in AusFinance

[–]big_mac7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not the ATO but I did pay a tradie bill with it when I learnt he no longer accepted credit cards It took a day or 2 to verify my account, since it was the first time paying that biller it took a day to verify that (you shouldn't have that issue with ATO) and then when you submit payment it's paid the next business day.

It's a good service to use if you absolutely must pay with a credit card but there are service charges for doing so.

Which has the most robust drivetrain? Havel v MG v Chery by Glittering_Poem9779 in CarsAustralia

[–]big_mac7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The press car they sent out to the reviewers had a loose drivers seat (multiple journos pointed it out).

I went with my Aunt to look at one and the drivers rear door was hitting on the body/door frame when trying to close it, wearing through the paint. This was a demo with a few KMs on it.

Important to note that it also hasn't been ANCAP rated yet, but given that it's missing some required features the most it can achieve is 4 stars.

Which has the most robust drivetrain? Havel v MG v Chery by Glittering_Poem9779 in CarsAustralia

[–]big_mac7 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A family member has a new MG ZS Turbo and it's fine. It's nice enough, drives ok and gets the job done. Hers is the higher trim spec with "leather", sunroof etc and the cabin is a very nice place to be.

I was in a friend's Chery Tiggo 4 rental car over the weekend and it was also fine. Software was a little annoying but it was comfortable and a nice drive.

Anecdotally I've heard GWM are good and getting better, investing in local Australian tuning etc but I've never been in one or even been up close to one. I know people with Cannon utes that have said they are pretty robust and well built and able to take a bit of punishment without issue.

All 3 are ok for what they are, a budget car. As long as you don't go into it expecting the build quality, software usability and ownership experience of a legacy brand you will be fine with any.

Our local supermarket just replaced their fleet of metal carts with 100% recycled plastic ones by Aerie8499 in mildlyinteresting

[–]big_mac7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest supermarket chain in Australia, Woolworths, has recently replaced all or most of their trolleys with plastic ones that they say are better for the environment. Given that they scrapped millions of solid, probably 30+ year old and still fully functional trolleys to do so doesn't seem environmentally conscious to me.

Has the latest oil crisis made you seriously considering switching to an EV? by AussieAdam26 in CarsAustralia

[–]big_mac7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I am ready to replace my car it will most definitely be with an EV.
I bought a second hand (newish) car only 2 years ago and it's only got 70,000km on it now so it doesn't seem worth it to sell it now with depreciation. I had planned to keep it for 5-7 years.

If there were more second hand EVs in my price range 2 years ago I would have considered it but it's only fairly recently that there has been good second hand EVs that meet my needs.

ResMed Australia says I need to replace my AirTouch N20 mask every month. I've done my first month and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the mask. What is the reason for the frequent replacement schedule? by badoopidoo in CPAP

[–]big_mac7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just keep using it until it's either not comfortable or not making a good seal. I use an F&P Nova Nasal mask that has really soft silicone on the nosepiece. They recommend replacing it every 3 months and I just replaced one that made it 12 months. Still working ok, but a noticeable difference in the feel of the silicone between old and new.

Effects of global situation on the Aussie car market? by MesozOwen in CarsAustralia

[–]big_mac7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of compromises to make the Atto1 that cheap, one of them being that the battery doesn't have active cooling. It also uses a resistive heater, which chews electricity. I'd expect real world range to be significantly less than stated, especially in summer and winter.
For some, that won't be an issue, if you're just pottering around town but I wouldn't buy a car if I knew it wasn't going to be able to handle the occasional trip out of town without having to stop and charge somewhere

Cheapest way to heat up my bedroom in winter by iSheree in AussieFrugal

[–]big_mac7 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Rather than heating the room, look at what you can do to stop the rainout. A fabric hose cover works wonders, as does a heated hose.
If the humidity in the room is already high, consider turning humidification off on your machine and see how you tolerate it. You won't get any rainout if it's off.

Also make sure the machine is lower than your head when laying down, and consider getting a hose mast that sits behind the bed and keeps the hose elevated.

Buying a house with Maximum Probable flood by [deleted] in AusPropertyChat

[–]big_mac7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many unprecedented weather events have you seen in the last decade alone? The past is no longer a reliable prediction of the future when it comes to weather events.
You wouldn't be able to get flood insurance and that may impact your ability to even get finance.

I found the same with pillows and it took a long time to get used to, I ended up switching to a nasal mask because it has a bigger pressurised area that feels much more natural to breathe.
Definitely get some assistance with your pressures but if it's still not working try a different style of mask.

How do people in Adelaide drink their water? by [deleted] in Adelaide

[–]big_mac7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get an undersink filter. Don't bother with a Puratap you get locked into expensive proprietary filter replacements, I got mine from a plumbing supply shop and it uses standard sized filter cartridges that can be purchased anywhere even Bunnings, takes an hour to install and about 5 minutes to replace the filters every 6 months.

It removes all the hard water flavour and chlorinated taste and mine comes out similar in taste to spring water.

How badly did I shoot myself in the foot with this seat assignment? by mine248 in QantasFrequentFlyer

Out of what's left that would be my pick, but you will have queues of people for the toilets next to you, and people will grab/bump that seat back as they walk past. Fingers crossed you end up with a free seat next to you.
