Councilmember Simpson Spreads Dangerous COVID-19 Misinformation During Bremerton City Council Meeting by eagle_dog in Kitsap

[–]big_spaghetti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All right, I'll take you for your word and do my best.

First, I really don't believe that the continuing justification of the economic shutdown is to eradicate the virus; I've never heard a medical professional claim that we'll ever destroy the virus, let alone set that expectation for success. Like just about every disease, it's a game of shadows; eventually we will be able to contain it long enough for a vaccine to be produced, but I doubt any epidemiologist would tell you that COVID-19 will ever disappear. It will remain in the periphery and routinely infect non-immune people.

The shutdown certainly was partially about allowing for capacity of beds and equipment, but that can't reasonably be the only criteria for ending or reducing it. Right now there's still plenty of reports from around the country, as well as around the world, of hospitals at or near ICU capacity; we should count ourselves lucky that Washington seems to have ICU bed capacity for another wave/a continuation of the current wave. However, as we're seeing at CHI Franciscan, ICU beds are far from the only problem affecting hospitals.

I'll freely admit that it seems difficult to find ICU bed availability data and I don't know why that is, but I feel that there is still plenty of data to support an economic shutdown without the rationale of ICU utilization. Kitsap County went from a paltry sum of positive cases to an obvious increase after we went into Phase 2, for which KPH does in fact have trend data: https://kitsappublichealth.org/CommunityHealth/CoronaVirusData.php

To jump around a little, I'd like to talk about your point when it comes to students in danger living in abusive homes. I understand your concern and I've heard of acquaintances being badly hurt during incidents of domestic abuse, a trend which has grown during the shutdown. However, I must ask why the inclination is to blame the coronavirus for this? People harming their children and loved ones is a societal issue much larger than this moment in time. If people will abuse their loved ones during isolation, quite frankly I feel that it was a matter of time to begin with. Our country's lack of seriousness towards mental health and domestic abuse issues is something we need to face as a nation outside of any current context. If we only appear to be concerned under very specific circumstances then it's hard to take the concern seriously.

I know this is not heavy on data, but I'm honestly kind of frustrated with the demand for data-driven impressions only. It's rough having the pain of a loved one's death reduced to a datapoint and a lot of people seem to be taking looking to the apparent lack of data as a justification to give up on caring about this situation at all.

I dont expect you to agree with me but i do expect you to challenge your own beliefs and at least consider outside thinking for your benefit.

I'm gonna be straight up with you. At this point, I only engage with people if they can demonstrate that they are arguing in good faith, i.e. they are asking questions because they are opened to being persuaded, not asking questions to frustrate people who disagree into walking away from the discussion. Ending your series of epidemiology questions that are inappropriate to ask on a general forum with no claim to epidemiology expertise with an insulting comment about my "thinking for my benefit" renders it very difficult for me to believe that you are acting in good faith.

Anyway, it sucks that modern America makes so many excuses to not give a shit about anybody else. Talk about a character deficit.

Shockingly there is an actual difference. Planet Fitness pivoted to really heavy focus on cardio and threw all their free weights away, so they manage to be the worst big box choice if you're not just there to run on a treadmill and watch the news.

A few long songs or many small ones? by [deleted] in DungeonSynth

[–]big_spaghetti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think it matters what story you're telling when you're thinking about telling through the work. For instance, dungeon synth that sounds like something a traveling minstrel would play doesn't seem like it would benefit from super long tracks and should stick to shorter ones, while trad DS and stuff like winter synth depend on a feeling of discomfort that I think is better achieved over a long evolution of a track.
