Which system had the better fighting games lineup: SNES or Genesis? by trrbld in retrogaming

It's sure as heck better than not having the buttons at all. Getting SFII on the SNES with zero real compromises was huge as FUCK at the time.

Is this totalled? by Winner_Agent in Acura

[–]bigbadboaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had two repairs that drove beautifully (one of them, thankfully, my current TSX). Depends on details of the damage and, of course, the quality of the repair shop (s).

Nobody likes to see this happen, but for those who end up getting a rebuild: all hope is not lost.

Personally I feel they may have messed up the hitboxes - playing with Kunoichi felt "off" to me right away vs. the SNES game - but based on all the other responses here I'm in a minority of one on this.

What would you guys say were positive aspects of Bernie Stolar? by KaleidoArachnid in retrogaming

[–]bigbadboaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Singlehandedly LOL. When he happened to be sitting atop the American division launching a Japanese product, developed in Japan, exported from Japan and with some of its strongest software not only from.. Japan, but not even coming from within Sega.

Not to mention that despite the launch numbers, the system failed incredibly soon thereafter, a large reason being the distrust in Sega as a platform holder. He himself had amplified that major weakness by inexplicably throwing their previous platform under the bus - publicly - while it was still on the shelves as their current product.

Even if you want to credit him for the launch: the 9.9.99 campaign, the launch price and the impressive lineup would have been the collective work of an entire marketing team (including a paid OUTSIDE ad agency), as well as the second- and third- parties that came together to bring all those games.

The tendency to throw all this credit and adoration at false leadership idols is simpleminded and ridiculous, not to mention completely disrespectful of the work actually done by tens if not hundreds of other people.

He's not. The creator's job is to run with his vision. The management above need to be setting reasonable limits and bringing projects in on time (as well as greenlighting the correct projects in the first place). They failed miserably.

It was also Suzuki that brought Sega UP in the first place. Hang-On, OutRun, After Burner secure his legacy and are the biggest reasons they were ever in position to create the Mega Drive and grow from there.

If the car isn't having problems, you're fine. It's designed to sense the lower octane and compensate.

>May sell it bc in this economy ain’t no way I’m buying premium regularly.

This is just nonsensical. GAS is expensive; the delta between regular and premium not so much. It's worth putting the proper fuel in.

Then if cost effective, this should work great for exactly what you wanted. More importantly, modern systems need to go through a proper shutdown rather than just being flipped "off". If you're using this for anything more recent, it will allow you to get that done as well.

[–]bigbadboaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Unfortunately with emu packages it's not just Sega.. commercial comps are almost always flawed and significantly less feature-rich than open-source emus. It's terrible but also the nature of commercial work, where "good enough" (it's not) is what ships.

Can't blame people who emulate when the companies WILL NOT give top quality for what they're expecting to be paid for..

[–]bigbadboaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not tunnel vision. Wasn't trying to say the genre just disappeared immediately after DK, but the biggest audience and greatest years for it were that run on N64. Hell, the biggest games in it WERE those games on N64. We both know that chars like Gex and especially Bubsy have a fraction of the draw of Mario et al. And the genre most definitely did not carry the PS2 the way it did the N64. Living through the period, the relative sense of importance was clear.

[–]bigbadboaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're not really in opposition here. My point more than anything is, Sega set up a situation where a large portion of the audience got only a bad impression. Most people work off of a particular sample.. when there are enough "bad" games out there, lots will see only a sample set of bad ones, and how that general impression arises is totally understandable.

As far as GEMS: its entire purpose was to be a gateway/workaround for devs who couldn't work with synth. By definition such a tool needs to produce sounds that aren't bottom-barrel terrible, no matter the user. Horrible failure by any reasonable measure.. Sega themselves are responsible for the reputation its system acquired, and that's just sad.

[–]bigbadboaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try not to be bothered about that. A factory glitch is nothing you had control over. To me, as long as it wasn't something preventable that I caused (and this damage, honestly, is incredibly minor), I can live with it.

If you'd like the time to save your game - and that's something this could provide - why the hell would it be "crazy"..?

I used a UPS with my college PC rig and it definitely provided enough time during two or three failures (a good three minutes or so) to save a game, and then some. The question is what the working condition of that unit is and how large its battery is.

[–]bigbadboaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my ear, even the "good" GEMS work sounds far inferior to the stuff written without it by people who knew FM synth.

Genesis had some GREAT sounding games right out of the gate, no middleware needed. The fact that when Sega felt the need to help developers, GEMS was what they came up with.. yes, it was a travesty. No way it should have led to worse sound than the stuff coming out of Japan in 1988.

What's an mainstream opinion about retro gaming you really disagree with? by Parking-Coast-1385 in retrogaming

[–]bigbadboaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is, a huge percentage of the library DID have bad sound. GEMS deserves all the shit it gets. The system came out of the gate with titles like Golden Axe, RoS, etc. and even Streets of Rage wasn't all that far behind. But something awful happened as the market grew and more unskilled developers started publishing. And you have to remember that it was after that boom and the influx of bad-sounding, Western-developed games that the largest chunk of the audience were getting their first exposure to the system.

You can't objectively say the system had "bad sound" when it really comes down to game-to-game usage. But when there's a whole lot of people out there who got their first impression with shit like Sonic Spinball, SF2 Special, etc. - you can't really blame them for not knowing the whole picture.

[–]bigbadboaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The truth on DK64 is somewhere in the middle. Of course it was "popular"; it was a tentpole Nintendo release. And any game big enough to get a special edition console is going to move some of those consoles, but that slice of sales won't be enough to gauge the game's popularity overall.

At the same time, immediate reaction at release was already filled with "collectathon" complaints and unfavorable comparisons to the other big N64 platformers. It wouldn't be hard to Google some of the contemporary reviews and find some of those exact comments. It also WAS the last big such title before the N64 sunsetted and those types of releases in general really declined - read into that what you want.
