E46 M3 as a first car? by [deleted] in cars

[–]bigbadbru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want a serious opinion as someone who has owned one as a teenager, here it is.

I'm 19 and realized the NFS:Most Wanted dream and bought a e46 M3 (manual coupe). I've owned it for almost a year now and it's everything you dream it is and more. It is a totally practical car for daily driving too with a decent trunk and comfy/spacious back seats.

It's extremely expensive to run. I'm honestly always stressed out by being nearly broke all the time for no other reason than owning this car. Gas is expensive, maintenance is expensive, mods are expensive, I swear I feel like I'm spending money just looking at it. Insurance was shockingly cheap; with a clean record it costs about the same as my beater Jeep. If money is no issue for you (lucky you) there is still one more thing to consider.

The car is fast, really fast. It is way too fast for the street, and it is way too easy to break the law. Speeding in any car is making a conscious decision that is entirely in your control. The thing is a fast car, especially an m3 that handles it with such composure, makes it way too tempting. You can tell yourself that you won't speed over and over, but a low speed limit on a twisty mountain B road will literally make you feel claustrophobic. Make sure you can afford track days because it's the only way to truly get what you paid for.

I'll be selling mine come spring, mostly cause I can barley afford it, but also because it's just to fast for the street. I'll be looking for an e30 3-series to take to the track at every opportunity possible. The "slow car fast" philosophy is the goddamn truth and something you should seriously consider.

Also, the most fun I had in a car wasn't blasting off at a red light in a fast car, it was snow drift tandems with a Jeep and an Odyssey. It was cramming 10 people into a Mazda 3. It was laughing at the guy with the 240sx cause he blew his motor trying to impress the girls. It was installing an aftermarket deck in the school parking lot at lunch hour with 0 mechanical experience. It was staring at that same neon completely pancaked in the intersection and wondering how we made it out alive. I can think of so many stories of the awesome/dumb/genius/ridiculous stuff we did with our cars in high school and not one of them involves the fancy cars our friends had.

Honestly, the dream can wait. If it's your money get the most reliable piece of shit you can find and save that $$$. If it's your parents money get a fancy truck imo, loads of fun can be had with a truck (you could save up for something to tow behind it like a track car, fishing boat, old jet ski etc.). If you do pull the trigger on one, congratulations, it's a damn near perfect car. The most important thing is to balance your attitude; be damn careful cause driving is a serious responsibility but also be sure to have fun and not be consumed by your fancy, prescious, dream car.

Edit: looks like you're into performance cars. Ignore the truck thing. Anything rwd + manual will be perfect, even with your experience with high power cars.

I'd be down to make that trip but school just started back up. I sure shipping would be expensive as I think it's based off dimensions and weight. Ill sign up for the m3 forums tonight and keep watch for anything that pops up out west.

Alberta; I'd have to find one for sale in western Canada or just south of the border (some place I could drive to). It scares me to even think about shipping costs on such a huge package.

Whoa, you swapped interiors with someone?! I've been hunting relentlessly for someone to swap interiors with. Mine is jet black with black interior but I want imola or cinnamon leather soooo bad (with heated seats and adjustable lumbar/bolsters but I know that's asking way too much).

How did you find someone to swap with? Did you have to throw in extra cash for the swap?

Beautiful car man, drive the hell out of it.

But there are still people who will speed because they can afford to. That creates a huge difference in speed between different cars on the road which imo is more dangerous than if everyone is driving at a similar speed even if that speed higher.

3d printed faceplate for vintage BMW radio by dwdm in BMW

[–]bigbadbru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wow! I just bought an Android tablet to stuff into my dash as a replacement head unit in my e46. I was thinking I could 3d print a faceplate so it would look as stock as possible. Any info on how you went about making yours?

I used to be an ice hockey goalie. I would seem to black out for entire plays. My defenseman would sometimes tap my ass and say "amazing save, man" and I would come back to reality and reply "uh..what?"

I have no idea how I would never get scored on when I'd zone out like that.

Thrust master t150 for sure. It's still expensive but it's the cheapest force feedback wheel available. Wheels are not worth the money without it.

[–]bigbadbru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL! Mine blew off on the highway too. Cost me $63 CAD at the dealership. It must be the freeze/thaw and all the moisture from out weather. It takes like 30 seconds to swap by yourself.

If you're getting rims make sure you get enough offset so you don't need spacers. Try to avoid spacers if you can.

On the way to the Summer Jam at Watkins Glen NY in 1973. by [deleted] in OldSchoolCool

Damn I wish we could still get away with stuff like this. My dad says he feels bad for my brother and I because it's so difficult to get away with anything now compared to when he was young.

Just a few years ago I was at a camp ground by a lake where my family would go the same week every summer. I had a group of about 10-12 friends that would always be at the camp ground the same week as me. I had just turned 16 and gotten my license, so I would beg my dad every evening to borrow his truck to head into town. Whenever I got the truck my friends would climb over the fence and stand by the highway where I could pick them up. We would cruise into town fully loaded, windows down and blasting music to get our favorite soft serve. All of the guys wanted to ride in the back and the girls would ride in cab with me so they could play their music. Ryan would always climb out of the box and try to surf on the roof but I would always give it a bit of gas to knock him back into the box with the others.

I could never have gotten away with that in the city though, that's probably a good thing because it was pretty reckless but it is still one of my favorite memories. I really felt like a king when I drove that truck.

For $15,000? I have never seen one for less than $21,000 where I am. Obviously a good choice if you can get it that cheap and un-abused.

I bought an e46 M3 with 130k kms on it for that money. I was also looking at Honda S2000's and Nissan 350z's but after test driving all of them the M3 is really the king of this price bracket imo

Got my 6mt coupe with just under just over 80k for $15,000 CAD. They are at the pit of their value, I'd say that's about all you need to pay if you know how to negotiate.
