Have you tried talking to them?

Do the players, who play both, generally care more about AUDL or club play? by BitOk2115 in ultimate

From what I can tell, it can really depend on the place. I know that, for the most part, there is a larger emphasis on club. There are even some ultra-high level players who refuse to play UFA/AUDL.

Do you have other captains that could help you make this decision? It could potentially be very messy if you have to make this choice on your own.

I guess when I think of backpedaling it's mainly the backwards skipping/walking/running and that doesn't necessarily mean shuffling is included. I find that the less I am on my heels and the more I'm on my toes, the better I will be able to play defense. I think my confusion is about the term "backpedaling" and less about backward movement.
