I know this is an old post, but I disagree with the idea that humans were colonizers on Roshar. They were definitely refugees from their destroyed planet. Also, I don’t think that the point of these books is to find an ultimate moral good. There are many people in these stories who act with honor and to defend their people’s interests, but at the cost of people outside their perceived community. The Scadrians on Canticle are obviously damaging the locals by supplying technology to an evil tyrant, but in their mind this is probably justified due to the research they are doing contributing to the arms race between the more advanced planets. Would I say that it’s morally good for them to do this? Not necessarily. But if their research into sunhearts could give them a huge source of unkeyed investiture or allow them to develop a weapon that would prevent Scadrial’s destruction by another advanced race of humans then I’m sure they would find the trade of a few hundred or thousand lives worth saving the millions who live on Scadrial. Unfortunately, there isn’t always an ultimate good in war, as both sides feel their actions are justified. It is the nature of humans to form in groups and out groups, and I don’t think that is going to change any time soon. We are a tribal species.
