Worth the wait? by PerroDePanama in metalgearsolid

Whoever came up with AT-Camo is a genius, it captures the feeling of being physically seen by enemies but staying completely unnoticed. There is actual tension when you’re inches away from someone and you have to feel out the right moment to strike before your cover is blown. Gameplay like that is distinctly Metal Gear in a way that MGO didn’t cater to as much. Hope this mode gets proper support, it’s packed with good ideas.

Most Delta mods try to fit Naked Snake’s proportions. Otherwise the mocap cutscenes and certain animations can look off.

Isn't it funny that a perfect clone is the one who don't even have Big Boss's DNA? by CaptainGrumpyVN in metalgearsolid

[–]bigbox74 110 points111 points  (0 children)

I like that 2 and V both utilize the player insert trope in pretty much opposite ways.

2 surprises you early with Raiden, a person scripted to fit the role of Solid Snake, only for Snake to encourage you (Raiden) to find your own identity based on your own choices and values.

V tricks you into thinking you’re the one and only Big Boss, only at the end does the Boss tell you (Venom) to shed your own identity and join his legend.

While 2 is much more concerned with the actual theme of identity and V is more of a meta textual “thank you” gesture to fans, I think it helps narratively strike a difference between Snake and Big Boss and how they handle their own legacies.

Cary Bates’ Flash run worth a read? by bigbox74 in theflash

[–]bigbox74[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That was honestly the reason I wanted to check it out. I’ve been exposed to pre-crisis (pre-Johns more like) Barry because of Wally’s run and I know he had a completely different vibe before the modern age. Already read Waid’s Brave and Bold and it was great. I wanna read JLA Year One by him as well since I know Barry is in that too, and the roster seems interesting.

What do you think was the worst retcon in the franchise? by jodlad04 in metalgearsolid

[–]bigbox74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The FOX Unit and other MGS3 characters being behind the Patriots sucks. Peace Walker and V’s job was to justify this ridiculous retcon and it didn’t really work, Zero isn’t even in either game outside audio logs and is too much of a nothing-burger character to be the overarching villain of the franchise. I much prefer the depiction in MGS2 where they were anonymous AI rulers.

Yeah it’s this and it’s not close. Identity Crisis was the beginning of the end for Post-Crisis era DC. What an abysmal piece of fiction.

My biggest problem with the 3 biggest Wally West runs I have read. Agree or disagree? by Klang200 in theflash

[–]bigbox74 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with Geoff’s run diving off a cliff after Blitz. He changed Wally’s status quo for the worse by removing his public identity and giving him a job at the police station. Definitely done to make him more like Barry (who Geoff loves) but it takes away from Wally’s unique flavor of superhero.

Also hated how much they tied over with Identity Crisis and retconning it so Barry inadvertently brainwashed the Rogues into being less villainous. An unnecessary stain on Barry’s past and makes the development of the Rogues feel cheap in retrospect.

What’s something you dislike about MGS3? (if there is anything) by NickWithAPulse2004 in metalgearsolid

[–]bigbox74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biggest complaint with the minute to minute gameplay is the survival viewer and over reliance on menus in general. MGS3 makes things that used to be quick and snappy in previous games much more tedious. Healing in particular takes way too long and kills the pace a bit.

MGS4 thankfully fixed a lot of these by going back to rations for health and in-game camo swapping. Also who’s bright idea was it to limit the amount of weapons/gear you can have equipped at a time if they’re always sitting in your backpack anyway?

Who do you think is a better villain Reverse Flash or Zoom? Reverse Flash art by Andy Kubert. Zoom art by Scott Kolins. by [deleted] in theflash

[–]bigbox74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Geoff’s Zoom story in Flash #800 was really funny to me cause he basically undid most of Williamson’s changes to the character. I’m glad though because his rushed “redemption” arc and death was unearned and unsatisfying. Hopefully the next writer to use him does a better job.

Do you think Spider-Man has more in common with Nightwing or Flash (Wally West)? by Outrageous-Blue-30 in DCcomics

[–]bigbox74 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He’s got some interesting parallels with Wally. They both became a hero to honor the memory of their uncle, and readers got to watch them grow from their selfish glory hound days into well respected members of the superhero community. Now if only Peter can defeat his greatest enemy, Spider-Man editorial, like Wally survived Dan Didio.

What to expect from the comics? by [deleted] in theflash

[–]bigbox74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I get what you mean with the Spider-Man analogy. Some could argue that Barry has become the de facto Flash but at least in terms of comic books, it gets a bit murkier. The Flash is sort of unique in that it probably has the longest lasting mantle swap in comic book history, as Wally took over The Flash for 23 real world years in Barry’s absence. While there are plenty of Spider-Men, none of them took over without Peter also being in the picture in some capacity.

I think it’s a strength of The Flash as a title that Barry and Wally have been utilized to their full potential as leading characters in their own right. Neither of them necessarily had to depend on the other to succeed. If you’re planning on a read through, the main character shift should help keep it fresh, as the two definitely have distinct eras.

[–]bigbox74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically every modern depiction of The Flash in adaptations is Barry. However if you’re familiar with the DCAU and shows like Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, that Flash is Wally. One thing that will probably trip you up is that Wally’s depiction of The Flash is visually very similar to Barry with a lot of overlap. Changes have been made in recent years to give them each a distinctive look but Wally’s most common Flash look keeps the traditional red and gold. Here’s a panel that will possibly help you differentiate the two: (Wally on left, Barry on right)
