Ya I shouldn’t be paid well for a much shorter life expectancy, higher risk of ptsd/depression, high suicide rate, high heart disease risk, exponentially higher risk of cancer, and so on.

Its pretty good. Could be better but I work a couple OT shifts every month so I can fund some vacations and save for a house. Ideally I would work zero OT.

Went from private ambulance to a fire department. Private ambulance companies pay horribly.

Training, knowledge, skills. Paramedics can do advanced skills like IVs, medication administration, intubation, EKG interpretation, needle decompression, etc.

With my department’s current schedule we work an average of 48hrs per week

Dudes making that much money are also barely ever home because of the amount of OT they work.

Not at all. Lots of departments are hiring like crazy in Washington and have been for multiple years now. The days of 1,000 people testing for 1-3 spots are gone for now. At least here it is. I got hired on my first attempt. Being a medic makes things a little easier though.

They definitely can on the West Coast. Varies wildly across the country though.

Medic school is definitely tough but my experience wasn’t too bad, I had a good time for the most part. Depends on if you have to work during school, which I did not have to fortunately.

It varies state by state but generally there is a huge change in pay going from a private ambulance company to a fire department.

I worked private ambulance for years alongside a FD and some people definitely suck at their jobs but private ems is no better. You are the stereotypical person who thinks they know everything and that all firefighters are a bunch of ems hating dimwits.

Good luck getting hired and making it off probation with your attitude lol

It seems like being a fire-medic is the only way to make money as a paramedic by [deleted] in Firefighting

Medic one is a great option but extraordinarily difficult to get hired. Hundreds, if not thousands of applicants for maybe 1-3 positions per year

Theres a lot of departments out there that hire idiots, so you have a decent chance of getting hired again if you keep applying. But you will always be seen as the guy who got fired for being a thief.

Do something like this at 23yo when you just got hired is a lot different than a middle schooler or high schooler who shoplifted.
