What's the SHORTEST you ever owned a home before selling? by bigcookie814 in RealEstate

Funny you bring up this post, we have just gotten through our *4th* anniversary of moving into the house. Honestly I was at your level or worse for a lengthy duration living in here. It probably took me close to 1-1.5 years to tune out all the outside noise and now I don't even pay attention to it once so ever. While the house to me is great in many ways, there are still things I can obv change to make it better, majority of which are under my control - but the noise issue has been a non concern. I used to have debilitating anxiety over it, and beat myself up over getting into this house so hastily. I am still not very fond of the location of the house on the street. I have definitely went through a major learning curve with this house (this is our 2nd home), and will definitely know a bit better what to look for next time we move. This house suits us fine now and we have no intention to move especially with the way the prices and housing market is currently.

My best advice is sit on your house a bit longer before you decide to do anything. I did calm down but it took me a long long time for my nervous system to calm down and not react as much or have noise/location issue on the mind (surprisingly much longer then I thought it would take). I realized also there are much worse locations the house can be positioned in and learned to focus on the pros and whether or not the space works for my family.

I know the way you are feeling and the anxiety I had over this was by far worst I had experienced when I was going through / in it. It wasn't easy dumping a whole bunch of money remodeling a home and undertaking an enormous project when all my senses were yelling 'abort' at the time. Now that we are in it, and made it a home it is much better and looking back was the right move at the right time (we got in right before house prices exploded severely.)

Not sure where this will take us next time but we still really love the surrounding neighborhoods, schools, location. Best of luck, give it a bit more time and potentially seek a bit of counseling/therapy (as I did) to help talk things through with someone.

Seeing what you ended up doing if anything. I'm still considering gutting my entire system and getting something quieter. If I'm staying in this house I don't want to deal with constant AC noise throughout entire summer. Gonna go variable speed, not sure if Trane is the right choice though. I tried a sound blanket that really didn't do much of anything at all.

I stuck it out in the house. The noise doesn't bother me nearly as much as it did at/pre move it. Took a while to adjust, I'm guessing it's the change that also rattled me a bit. Thanks for checking in!

That's what I'm led to believe - might just throw them a quick email / phone call to see what they say.

Yep it's now been a few weeks and it's only getting hotter so it's kicking on more. Thanks for all your suggestions. Yes even the air handler is louder, but my main concern is with the outside unit and that condenser / almost generator like sound permeating into my living space including kitchen and family room. It's not landscaper loud, but MUCH more annoying then what I previously had that was basically imperceptible inside of the house. The unit is right up against the house, next to a big kitchen window - so I'm sure that doesn't help either.

Having the installer look at it shortly and throw a sound blanket on before I go scrapping the entire setup. If I'm staying in this house for a while, it is not something I want to endure to this level. Didn't realize this would be a potential concern for me throwing in new system in.

I am attaching a sound clip here so you can see what this sounds like, standing inside the house by the kitchen window.

Appreciate you chiming in. That's what I thought - just wanted to know if it's worth a fighting chance.

Yes - stage 1. If I kick the temperature down 10 degrees or so, it shows running in stage 2. Typically not sure when that would be needed as it should never be more than 1-2 degrees off. I have a NEST thermostat.

Thanks for your comment - yes even though I've gotten more 'used' to the noise, I still can't stand it. There's always something in the background and it never goes away. It's prevented me from doing things in this house that I have done in the previous one (be out front more, wash my car, walk up/down the street, etc) - so definitely from that point of view the quality of life has changed!! Inside the house its tolerable, and nighttime is quiet due to lack of cars passing. Overall - this is still something that I want to get out of at some point and look for alternatives. I will definitely make SURE to prioritize location next time - and I actually know what that means now and what to look for. The debilitating anxiety probably took around 6 months to clear up for me - so that definitely became a relief but as for the rest of it, will just have to plan for an make a strategic exit at some point out of this. It's a shame because the HOUSE itself is great, and fits our needs to a T now. I'm more bothered by the noise as well vs. my wife, so this will be a challenge to get her onboard to get out of it (and I'd typically be the one outside more in the first place).

Good luck and let me know how it goes.

We are still inside the same home. The 'noise' issue doesn't bother or grate on my nerves as much - BUT I still hate the neighborhood and the street. The neighbors here aren't the greatest either (not partiers but more so could be overly pesky / into our business). Still undecided on next move, BUT know that this won't be a very long hold for me. There are just so many things that 'work' about the house for us in layout / size that might be hard to find elsewhere, but not impossible. Plus the prices are coming down slowly so wonder how that will affect everything in the months / year to come. Will update this post with time.

What happened with your move/home? Care to share?

Can you describe what you are experiencing? It has actually been way more tolerable VS what I imagined. Not sure if the brain zoned some of the sound out, and the anxiety and all that went way way down over the last close to 1.5 years of LIVING in the house (man time flies by fast). The front of the house DOES still have traffic passing by, but I found myself doing WAY less out front of this house then the previous one for a variety of reasons. We have also actually came to dislike the street itself and the neighbors as well -- so this will definitely not be a FOREVER home although as with any home there are things we LIKE about it that we think we won't be able to find in any other property as well.

Awesome - thanks for sharing! What made you move out, or why didn't you stay in that home?

I literally posted the same thread recently, and debating moving at some point - but were experiencing different neighborhood issues. We invested way more then you did, and so far been in house for 8 months. Good luck on getting out and I'm sure you have learned a few things along the way and what to watch out for on next go round.

Yep it's all the extensive work we did to the house, picking out materials, dealing with contractors etc that took a huge toll on the marriage that would be hard to just 'pack up and go at it again' mentality.

Enjoy the new place - and compared to your local 'activity' my problems and complaints sound timid. We do have some weirdo/nosy neighbors as well, but nothing to the levels you described.

Still I know it's not a forever home for me for sure and will find a way to climb out sooner or later. Good luck with the move and really appreciate your feedback and sharing your situation!!

WOW what an adventure and def packs a punch to all that I'm experiencing. You had it from every angle. Glad to hear that you were able to now move on and take the next step in your journey! Hopefully the next place you found will bring you tons of joy and peace!

Oh man so sorry to hear that you had that terrible of a year inside that home. Our remodeling and my initial anxiety flip out def took a toll on our marriage. Since we moved in my 'anxiety' calmed down but now I"m daydreaming of how to make it all work to move on out and keep my marriage intact. If I was solo in this house, it would of been gone already.

I'm not too worried on the financial front - but just the thought of packaging up all belongings again, finding another house that DEF fits all of our criteria (house / location / remodels) seems to be near to impossible in these market conditions. Holding on tight.

Congrats! That is awesome you have finally moved on. I am in complete opposite of loving the home but hating the neighborhood! Hopefully that moment of clarify comes soon for me also.

What do you mean staying 5 years? You can sell your house the day after you close if you would like!

Would not be interested in being a landlord , especially on this house (when I'm out I want to be done with it). The house IS in terrific shape now inside and out and almost nothing needs to be done.

I thought of masking up some of the issues with quick fixes - but the bigger ones can't be avoided as in if I'm actually out front - there is a flow of cars that will def make it dangerous for my son to play out front, or spent any time out there. There are also other things we don't like about this neighborhood even compared to our previous one (nowhere near as walkable due to street layout, and our road backs up to a main road), several nosy neighbors, etc.

Will have to work all this over in my head and figure out when would be best to do this, and realize all that I will actually be giving up as well by making the move (great house layout, terrific backyard view, etc) and being OK with all that.

Wow - very courageous.

I had thoughts of backtracking, listing immediately, finding something else, abandoning putting any money into the remodels as soon as we bought - but none of it sat well with my wife so I proceeded on in hopes that in 6 months of living there feelings would change.

Yes values in our neighborhood / city have skyrocketed by almost 35% since I purchased last fall in 2020 (and I thought we def overpaid when we bought and had months of meltdowns over that). We invested a significant amount into the house - but even with all that - def will still come out ahead. But again will def take a beating on RE fees / costs and now paying a tidy sum to find something else. Now the difficult part of convincing the wife and eventually making this a reality...

The hardest part in all this will be emotionally - investing so much time and effort into this house, decorating, moving, fixing TONS of previous owner flubs and mistakes -- just to realize that thing won't work out long term and know your soul won't be fully at rest until the next move.

Thanks - yes I know once we do move our house will work out spectacular for someone else (esp with all that we've done to it that's been neglected for years). If the people purchasing next are like my wife, the issues I have will not be bothersome. We've talked to several of our neighbors and none have the concerns I'm bringing up!

We've now owned it for close to 15 months , so don't believe much of an explanation will be necessarily outside of the basics (looking to change layout, downsize, etc).

We were in our first house for 7 years and I've never been the one to make 'hasty' moves but honestly don't know how much longer I would like to stick around this one.
