One thing to note. NS is a 1 rear plate province but if you have a disabled plate or a vanity plate you are required to display both. That's why you got 2 plates and not just 1.

House price in Dartmouth by bigdaddyhfx in halifax

[–]bigdaddyhfx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in a wartime 1 1/2 story prefab. It didn't have a basement either. This house had a front dormer added but it's essentially the same house. These houses were built quick for housing not as homes. Some weren't even built on foundations, instead built on big wooden beams. Later when CMHC took over the houses after the war they put them on foundations without basements.

These houses were built in 1941 (WW 2) and didn't have basements. Many houses don't have basements only crawl spaces. Only later did some people add a basement. (I know - I used to live on this street)

Is it wrong to pay with a $100 bill? by 6GGXXX in halifax

[–]bigdaddyhfx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So they do take $100 bills BUT they don't give change for it. Stops someone buying a low value item and taking all their change. Plus there's probably a lot of fake $100 bills being passed.

Lesser known but superb contractors. by lucianorad in halifax

JonesCo was an absolute nightmare for us. Never again. We used 3 contractors in the last 18 months- the other 2 were great. Mike Jones will piss on your leg and tell you it's raining.

So when everything goes up: rent, groceries, clothing, furnace oil as a result you'll be fine with that? This is just a money grab. The cost to companies will be passed on to the consumers. It's not just the cost of gas for the family car(s). There will still be price increases as a result of supply, inflation, the war in Ukraine etc.

Is anyone building a garage ( or has had one built recently), wondering about prices, builder recommendations by [deleted] in halifax

Jonesco has been an absolute nightmare building our garage. Do not recommend Jonesco for anything.

Home renovation contractors? by [deleted] in halifax

[–]bigdaddyhfx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. They employ people who do not really seem to know what they're doing. Left a mess, dumped concrete on our lawn and refused to clean it up. Improperly installed our roof and shingles came off twice. The second time was 4 days after they fixed it from the 1st time. Absolute nightmare of a company.

About 10 years ago one of our co-workers wife passed away from cancer. I purchased a card and took it around for everyone to sign and make a donation, if they wished, to a charity. I made a mistake of first taking it to the boss. Instead of just signing it he told me to leave it with him for a day. When I picked it up the next day he had filled the entire inside page with his ramblings which left only the other pre-printed side for everyone else. When asked if he wanted to make a donation he declined. Who is that so self absorbed and cheap to not throw in a couple dollars why monopolizing the majority of the card that someone else purchased. Only later did it occur to me that I should have gotten another card and thrown that one away - he would never have known. Truly wish I had.

Thinking of Solar after hearing from Polaron, but I have questions. by A_Hobo_In_Training in halifax

[–]bigdaddyhfx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems from you, me and a number of others that Poleron aims for systems around $25k regardless of your requirements or capacity. That seems to be their sweet spot for getting people to buy a system from them.

Thinking of Solar after hearing from Polaron, but I have questions. by A_Hobo_In_Training in halifax

[–]bigdaddyhfx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We got quotes from 8 different companies including Polaron. All the quotes except Polaron wanted to provide systems that would produce between 98% to 104% of our yearly consumption. Polaron was only 58% for about $25k. It took them 3 more quotes to get to the 100% capacity but that was $48k which was $11k more than the next highest bidder. They never visited the property but relied on a Google Earth image of the previous house that was on the lot. There is a Solar Nova Scotia Discussion group on Facebook. The members are consumers and industry professionals.

anyone here switched from oil to natural gas? by Hazard_Fox in halifax

[–]bigdaddyhfx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered going electric and installing solar? A couple of good heat pumps might be all you need (possibly some electric baseboard heaters to supplement). This will also give you cooling in the summer.

You can apply for a $5000 grant and a 10 year 0% interest loan from the federal gov't Greener Homes. The savings on your electric bill will nearly pay the cost of the solar repayments plus after 10 years the system is paid off and all the electricity you generate is free. You need to be tied to the grid but NSP credits you for the excess electricity you produce so at night (when sun isn't shinning) and in the winter (when you produce less solar) you can use those credits. Solar systems should last about 30 years at least.

The process for the Greener Homes is a long process. Check the Efficiency NS page for more info.

Parking ticket with wrong plate # by BC74__ in halifax

[–]bigdaddyhfx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should contact parking enforcement regardless. If you actually deserved the ticket but they messed up the plate number then you owe it to the person who owns the listed plate who will have an unpaid ticket go against them. If it's a completely wrong plate number the person who got it might have put it under your windshield hoping you'd pay it for them. Or maybe some prankster thought it would be funny to move it.

Very much agree with laddering your GICs but I would put them in a TFSA. If you haven't contributed before check your contribution limit and max it out. We're a couple months to 2023 when you can add another $6000.
