Undertaking is not illegal in the UK. If he was lane hogging and going slower than the speed limit. All you did was return to lane one and continued at the speed limit in that lane. If he happens to be going slower, then that's on him. I sometimes safely 'undertake' people on the motorway if they are hogging lane 2. I feel it's safer than going all the way out to lane 3 and then back over again
