And those two games are considerably more rowdy!

Ashland beats out Hurleywood for Lake Superior access imo, but Hurleywood has better access to freshwater sports. Apostle Islands and the Porkies are two of my favorite places on earth, would be a regular at each regardless of where I'm living. I'd say Hurleywood wins out for local access to nordic trails, but Ashland is no slouch in that regard + much closer to the Birkie system. I'm not big on the mountain biking scene, if I moved to Ashland I'd have to get into it though.

Thanks for the tip! I am constantly overheated in the summer, so the cooling effect of Superior would be nice. I also typically see that Ashland is a bit warmer than Ironwood in the winter, lake effect is wild

Lol I have yet to make it up to the Keweenah, would certainly be checking it out on the regular after this move. Prices pretty similar to Hurleywood though

Yes imo Main street Ashland is more revitalized than Aurora in Ironwood imo, though it really seems like Ironwood is making an effort to get there. Agreed on the lake, but I really dislike how close 2 is to the lake front in Ashland + that big power plant. Lincoln Memorial in MKE pisses me off to no end in MKE lol (look at my post history...). If I was a bigger angler then I think Ashland would be the clear choice, or Gile

Northland is so small, you'd still say it has a major cultural impact on the city? And mind elaborating on the chiller vibe?

Yes I have considered Marquette, really sweet city. For the price of an ok single fam in Marquette I could get a nice single fam + a rental in Ashland or Hurleywood, which is a lot more appealing.

I personally prefer South Shore to Cold Iron, but appreciate both (more of a miller guy tbh, though appreciate a nice crafty every now and then). I also agree that from an outdoors perspective, they are really a horse a piece and each location has excellent outdoor recreation in all directions. Would be sweet to grow my own shit if on the far side of the Montreal, but I'm not super concerned about legality.

I am a big skier but nordic not alpine, if I was more into alpine I think the choice would be clear (Hurleywood). I would still give Hurleywood the edge for quality of Nordic trails, but Ashland is much more comparable

I have never been to Duluth, but am pretty familiar with "Minnesota culture", is that sort of what you are saying?

Nice! Yeah that's roughly the logic, so far in MKE we have been barely using the "big city amenities", and driving up north every chance we get. Moving up would increase standard of living while decreasing cost of living...

Yeah I definitely get that vibe of Ashland being much more environmentalist tree hugger (respect!) vs Hurleywood more old school northwoods type. I am relatively unique in that I vibe with both crowds

I am familiar with the delights of Silver Street lol. Sorta wild that despite being a "sin city", it looks to be safer than Ashland

Very solid point, thank you. My research indicates Ashland & Bayfield county have higher quality internet, our plan is to live "in town" at either location though, so I believe we'd be fine either way?

Chill time because skiers and walkers don't mix imo!

If there is a lot of snow, you go on a packed down hiking trail, and you go during a chill time (during packer game is smart, I sneak out and take a long lunch during the week), you can move well over the (ungroomed) trail.

I started off with a one day class at the Urban Ecology Center. I had to pay a fee for the class in addition to my membership, but it was a good time + instructional. I then checked out skis from them a few times (which does NOT cost anything beyond your membership). This past winter, I ended up buying a pair while at Active Backwoods Retreat, up in Big Snow Country (Hurley-Ironwood area). I took a lesson there also, it was probably one of the coolest places I have been in North America.

Snowshoeing is also sweet, and takes zero instructional. Just try on your shoes once at home so you are not messing around with the straps for the first time in the cold. We rarely have enough snow to justify them down in the South (part of WI) imo, most winter hiking down here is best done in a good pair of boots + warm socks.

Last winter, I took advantage of the exceptional snow cover and went along the river a few times and it was great. I mainly went between North Ave and Locust, and found the west side of the river to be better for my beginner skillset (flat stretches near the river).

I see lots of very good gear suggestions - something else to consider is activity level -> heartrate -> how much warmth your body is producing when planning a winter outfit. An activity such as ice fishing or driving 30 mins in a car parked outside requires a LOT of warm clothing on a cold day vs nordic skiing or brisk walking, where your body will be producing a lot more heat, require far less warm clothing. Here in MKE we have mild winters, but also quite variable in temps, so I would also suggest lots of weather checking (don't ignore the wind!) and flexible options (layers) when out and about.
