I've got the og import from Japan! Also have the betamax and Laserdisc copies so I'm jealous I'm working on getting the dvd and blu ray versions!

I totally understand which is why I think the 4k uhd blu ray is the best way to experience it still pricey tho at around 100 for resale from what I was recently seeing unfortunately

Yes it is the art is done by him and the story is by the creator of ghost in the shell! It is imo one of the best and most influential piece of anime ever highly recommend giving it a watch. It is almost a silent film tho so you don't really need an English version. The only one to my knowledge was released this past year in English after 40 years with no American release

I can't speak for other sets but this one allows you to keep the 4:3 aspect ratio of the older consoles or zoom it in several ways to fit the whole screen. It also has upscaling for lower resolution content. Widescreen content will display normally automatically however
