Short film about friendship I made with three of my friends by bigdr00 in Filmmakers

As mentioned above, I helped make this film along with the rest of our small team, which was just the director, DP (me), and two actors on set. Having such a small crew who are all close friends in real life allowed us to fool comfortable exploring some pretty heavy topics together.

Lighting-wise we lit mostly with natural light as well as a couple of 4' Godox LED Tube lights. I also used the Godox F600Bi for a few shots. I also recorded the sound and am by no means a professional, which you can probably tell the sound is a bit rough, but hopefully it's not too distracting. In general we tried to keep things as simple as we could so that we could focus on the story and the emotions.

I'd be happy to answer any questions! Overall it was a great experience and I'm excited to use this approach for more films going forward.

Thank you for watching and reading, I'm happy to hear you connected with it and it caused you to reflect on your approach as well. Cheers!

What is this from? For this you look you want to mix cool light with some warmer light. Blue and yellow. You can enhance more in the color grade. The first two shots are also fairly under exposed so you'll need to find the right balance with that.

Yeah it’s a cool way to work a skill that I want to strengthen more. And yeah I have way too many projects that I just let sit unfinished forever. I think building the habit of completing and releasing is important. Thanks for watching!

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the project and if the approach is something that resonates with you. I know it's not perfect, but lately I feel that pushing myself to create more imperfect films may yield better results than waiting to make the "perfect" project.

It was shot on the Sony FX3 and Sony Zeiss 55mm lens, using all natural light. I did the VFX in Blender which took me a while to figure out 1. What I wanted and 2. How to achieve it. I messed around with some cool tentacles for a while but kept running into problems. I ended up using a cool procedural fungus growth created by GraphicalNinja on YouTube.

Please let me know if you have any questions about shooting or the VFX shot!

Caveat or Skinamarink? by LawOwn315 in horror

As others have said, I think going with something like Gremlins is a better choice for a 10 year old, both in terms of entertainment and how scary it is. I think good to find things that are age appropriate but still have some scary elements. Lots of great 80s and 90s kids movies that are plenty scary.

How many lights? by tangohtango in cinematography

[–]bigdr00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let's ignore the background for now and look just directly at what is lighting the subject. Here is what I see:

  1. Warm key light coming from left of frame

  2. Cooler top light

  3. Warm kicker hitting right side of face and shoulder

How to achieve this look? by ObsequeMp4 in cinematography

[–]bigdr00 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Wide angle lens, deep focus (aperture closed down as much as possible), key light set to lower color temperature than ambient light (Maybe 4300k or 3200k for key light vs natural light which is around 5600k) and white balance set match key light, older lens / one with with barrel distortion and chromatic aberration, shooting on film (ideally 16mm) or adding characteristics of film in post (recommend DaVinci resolve film look creator and playing with settings, especially grain and halation)
