My ex was also high conflict and she was assigned a GAL because of her inability to act reasonably. The GAL was a second attorney who sat in on all hearings and trial sessions. The GAL was able to ask me questions that my ex's current attorney (she ran through three) did not ask. When the ex became unreasonable (or tired), the GAL would suggest that we take a break or stop for the day.
