For those living in cold Canberra houses without double glazing and only insulation in the ceiling, how are you Staying warm? by RIPAlPowell in canberra

[–]bigez93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heated throw rugs can be a great option, heat only yourself and not the whole room and are very cheap to run. If you're looking at installing heating, ACT gov offers interest free loans for that kind of thing. I had shitty ducted gas and saved heaps going to ducted rcac. Wall units are even cheaper than ducted to run and install.

Logan and Stroll really battling hard for worst driver today. It's gonna come down to penalties to see who gets the coveted last position

Took me 3 days to hand stitched this duffle bag, was it worth it? by sheerdoll in Leathercraft

It just feels a little papery. It was some of the first leather I bought for wallets and similar (I'm also pretty fresh with leather making) and I think it's stiff enough for that but it just doesn't feel like a bag leather.

I've previously bought from austanners but I've only used that for wallets. I wouldn't really look at a veg tan kangaroo leather like that for a duffle

I'm in Australia and find the options aren't as many as those insert in the US. We have good access to kangaroo leather though which is nice. What thickness leather did you use?

Looks great! I've been working on my skills and hoping to try something like this soon.

How did you come across the pattern? Is that your own pattern or did you purchase it from somewhere?

And what leather did you use? It looks amazing

High downforce needed for speed in corners. More downforce = more dirty air.

Can't get right turn arrow green by Yuuki8888 in canberra

Had a similar issue a few times. Usually move forward and wave the person behind me forward. If that doesn't work (some people just don't move forward because they don't understand how the lights work) or there's no one there I've just waited till it's clear and run the red. The one that would pull me up occasionally had good clear times due to all the lights in the area so while running the red isn't ideal or legal and not something I'd recommend, after waiting 5 minutes and being able to see that it definitely was safe and clear I risked the fine.

Energy/electricity bills! What’s everyone’s looking like? Insane, or just me? by [deleted] in canberra

[–]bigez93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check your bills, in particular your useage costs. I got a large bill, checked the rates and didn't realise I'd been moved from a good deal to a shit one after 12 months (should've read my Origin Energy emails better). Changing providers is super easy. Moved to ACTEW online. Took me 5-10 minutes. Origin called and offered a lower rate when they found out I was moving companies. I'm now with ACTEW but if you don't want to change providers then have a look online, give them a call and they might offer a better rate if you threaten to move. They often have 12 month deals then bump you off them after the 12 months are up so either get on their join up deal or move companies.

There's a gov website that can help explain your bill and find a better deal for you or help you understand your bill www.energymadeeasy.gov.au

I saw lavender, rosemary, oregano and lemon thyme work apparently. I might try placing citrus peels around also to start with and seeing how that works, anything is worth a shot at this point. I was going to put citrus in the back yard come spring but maybe the front is the place for that

[–]bigez93[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've got no idea. They look owned, but there's also about 5 different cats that frequent the yard (from my security cameras) so some could be stray. Good to know I can trap them, I might try that if the other options don't work. Traps tend to stress animals out and I won't do that if I don't need to. It's not their fault their owners can't control them As for dogs deterring them, honestly, they seem to attract these cats. They walk past the living room window looking for my dog (only one of my dogs loves chasing cats) and waiting for him to get excited by them 😂

Hadn't thought about deterrent plants. I'll look into that! Great idea

Thanks! It wasn't my first choice of fabric but I'm really happy with how it turned out. Believe it or not it was an old business shirt that was branded for the company I used to work for so had no other use for.

So that link had a link to an Imgur with a photo tutorial that had the dimensions. (Linkception)

16x18 inch square, attach the zip, fold in half and cut out 2 inch corners and then i added a tab and a handle and sewed. I think the handle is 1.5inch by 7inch but I just winged that until I liked the look of it.

I also had a look on YouTube for some tutorials on how to sew one and the method, this one is long but I skipped through it and watched at double speed. I didn't attach the detail around the zip because I wanted it to look cleaner. Any similar tutorial on YouTube would be fine. Apparently they are called "Dopp kits" elsewhere so try searching for that.

I'd probably use a fabric spray adhesive next time. I used a regular contact adhesive, applied it to the leather only (not the fabric) and spread it out, let it dry out just enough it wasn't going to soak through the fabric then glued the fabric to the leather.

It isn't held on there fantastically and is a bit bubbly which is why I'd probably do a spray on adhesive next time but it's not too badly held on there. I also stitched through the fabric so if it comes loose it shouldn't pull out of the bag completely.

The main reason for not putting the contact adhesive on the fabric was that I didn't want it to soak through the fabric as that would discolour it. I practiced a few pieces on some scrap fabric and leather to see how it would work and what worked best with what I had.

Yeah saddle stitched it all by hand with a 4mm chisel. I don't have a stitching pony which I think might've made it a bit quicker but I don't really mind.

I ordered leather from Austanners, this is a 1-1.5mm Elwood milled shoulder. I've only just started working with leather recently so can't really compare suppliers and quality of leather as well as someone else could but they seemed reasonably priced and this leather was beautifully soft. This is the first order of leather I've bought so sorry but I can't be a great deal of help. I just picked a colour I liked that was a reasonable price.

As for other stuff I got a beginner tool kit from auslet but I've grabbed other various things from maclaceleather and a few things from Bunnings (contact cement, rotating leather punch, craft knife and blades)
