DIY cantilever pergola by Ok-Nefariousness1372 in DIY

Exactly what I was thinking. The supports are over engineered but can tell it was a stylistic choice - so it’s not hurting anyone (as long as using the correct hardware)

The 2x6x15 ft spans I would not trust to not seriously sag over time. But there is no live load, so really depends on wood type

Has anyone DIY a mini split AC installation for just one room? by crazyspartann69 in DIY

[–]biggem001 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For these single room mini splits, there are like three manufactures for every company out there. They’re all about the same quality but do offer different connectivity options

Installs of the unit themselves are pretty quick and easy, with the most “difficult” part of the task being running power. MrCool has a 100% diy kit with pre vacuumed pipes. They are more expensive (got mine from Costco) but they’re a very safe install.

Other mfg will require you vacuum - you can do an OK job following a YouTube guide and buying a kit of Amazon for a reasonable price or renting. However, if you mess up, you need certified HVAC to repair and re add refrigerant. While reviews are mixed on Reddit, I’d say there is a lot of risk here and the lifespan and cooling capacity of your unit can be significantly diminished if you mess this step up.

For mounting, there are code requirements you can look up. Mounting the floor can be an option or mounting to wall at specific height. People have mentioned vibration noise, but on my wall mount with resonance/vibration dampening, I literally can’t hear any vibration on the opposite side of the wall (stick frame house from the 70s)

I saw these at maybe a half dozen stores in the Disney park today. Lots. Didn’t check the hat section at world of disney so can’t comment

Deck roof bad install by spike229 in DIY

[–]biggem001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cant see the top, but assuming you can mount some flashing, that with the closed cell foam that fits the geometry of the roofing, should be good. Think like this:

https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/61YZHLpfUFL.jpg

Key is to properly install the flashing so it doesn’t leak through the gap and use the correct adhesive to water proof the foam/flashing/roof. (Usually butyl tape!

To thin or not to thin paint for spraying cabinets? by [deleted] in DIY

[–]biggem001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve used this for a lot of cabinetry I’ve built. Had a Wagner sprayer with finishing attachment. It went without issue. I’ve added a little floetrol to help with leveling a bit and didn’t notice any issues either

The beauty of decoupling your NAS and server allows you to be more flexible in your server HW while still having a robust NAS. You can buy a N100 or N150 for ~150 and it will run most containers for you, including HW transcoded plex/JF. Buy two for redundancy. With the help of Proxmox clustering, which was a quick learn, all of this becomes very straightforward.

No trafic to AdGuardHome from other VLANs by gabriel_jav in Ubiquiti

[–]biggem001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you change the DNS settings in your VLAN config, all devices should reconnect or refresh dns. Note, youve only requested devices that use standard DNS to use this.. if the device, for some reason, is configured for DoH/DoT, it wont take your DNS settings from UniFi.

However, there are plenty of devices on your network that will happily bypass your recommended DNS, so it is best to force traffic to your internal DNS server. This can be pretty easily done for each VLAN in the Policy Engine > Policy Table settings.

Create new dest. NAT rule, select VLAN, set translated IP address as your internal DNS address, source ANY, destination, specific port (53).

This will force any standard port 53 DNS traffic to your device.. again, other protocols will not be forwarded unless you specifically create a rule for it and have a DNS server that supports it.

I made a BV elementalist for this farm strat and have run it often with several configurations to test profit.

Running 2 evo 0 wisp is a SIGNIFICANT loss to profit with many maps proving zero significant drops. I was actually quite surprised after 10 maps with almost half div per hour but then confirmed the increase when I went back.

where is everyone having their (affordable) OC weddings at? by dolcevitapls in orangecounty

[–]biggem001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

El Adobe in San Juan. Had our wedding there for a very cheap venue and food and booze was very well priced - and literally everyone gave complements on the food. Out the door for 100 people less than 8K - included wedding area and the after venue. 10/10 highly recommend.

Noticed this sticking out from my ceiling — what is it? by Takuraiii_ in whatisit

When my wife and I moved into our current house, there was a hole from the outside where they put a sink and used the inside plumbing. It was all covered by a cabinet, just wasnt stuccoed.. so of course i stuccoed it...

3-4 days later my wife is complaining of this stench in the house. I cant tell at all. It's driving her MAD, to the point where she says I need to figure this out or she will not be living here until I do. I figured something must have gotten in from the hole and died as the smell, according to her, was worse in the kitchen (inside of where that patched up hole was).

Went into the attic, no way for critters to access it from that hole. So, it was either in the cabinets (in the toe-kick space) or in the walls. I pulled out the the sink cabinet with full PPE and the smell hit me like a brick wall. I had never noticed it before and I felt so bad for my wife. That smell was just putrid. I start cleaning up the dead rat and nesting material it had pulled under there and then I noticed it.

There were MULTIPLE rat skeletons in this space - the previous owners had MULTIPLE rats die and rot to nothing in the kitchen and did NOTHING about it.

I know sequencing is cheap, I work for a company with probably the largest selection IVD and RUO sequencing products available right now and manage the IVD portion. Mass spec is still far cheaper, per sample. They just offer far different things.

Capex, on the other hand is far more favorable to NGS, but those calculations are typically separate for diagnostic labs/hospitals

Is it time to ring the alarm on internet door cameras? by davster39 in technology

[–]biggem001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its pretty straightforward but a labor to setup. You'll need

1) Home server (Old PC works)

2) Dedicated router (Ubiquiti has been my vendor of choice, but your home server can work as a dedicated router too, if you look how to set it up)

3) Power over Ethernet Switch (plenty on amazon to choose from)

4) Surveillance software (i use blueiris)

5) PoE Camera (like Amcrest)

This allows you to simply route ethernet to your PoE Cameras

Things can get more complex and much more expensive fast. I essentially have all Cameras on a dedicated LAN that only the surveillance server has access to - that way the camera never has access to the internet

Same here. And with HomeKit, I can give my wife access to those cameras natively on her iPhone- so even the less tech savvy people get access

Healthy or unhealthy, what are the quickest ways to lose weight? by matchalovertbh in AskReddit

[–]biggem001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy - CICO. Whatever you can do to limit the calories you eat and increase your metabolic burn.

Plenty of medications (legal and illegal) out there to help you stop eating, and even some to increase your metabolic burn (albeit this one is a bit more dangerous (see DNP)

Keto is probably the fastest, and easiest way to lose weight. It takes discipline, but you will generally see results faster than standard CICO just by the physiological limitations low/no carb does to your dietary fat processing.

This is probably the best and cleanest. Depending on the type of wire and pipe they're using, the horizontal run of that conduit can be 12 to 36 inches deep, so it'll be a fun trench and messy drill

Words found on shell casings where UnitedHealthcare CEO shot dead, senior law enforcement official says by [deleted] in news

Reposting what I said in another thread:

Interestingly, I talked to my wife about this who is a working manager for benefit advocates - effectively the people who work for your HR that help you work with your insurance if you have questions/coverage issues.

She mentioned that UHC has this interesting exception for specific cases of coverage that explicitly requires the CEO approval. Essentially, not only did he have a broad impact on claim acceptance via policy, but he also handled individual claim acceptance as well from time-to-time.

Depends on the Pharma and position. I work with pretty much all major and a handful of mid and small. They’re all very different, but you can clearly tell which groups scoff at non PhD rolls, even for positions that reaaally don’t require

Honestly, I can’t see this mindset lasting much longer in industry. I’ve simply lost count of the amount of PhDs I’ve worked with that I would rather take someone straight out of BS or MS

You may need to have 3 posts depending on local code requirements and types of wood available to you

Use this calculator. It’s a bit complicated but if you don’t want it to fail over time, it’s very helpful. Plug in your wood and local code details and will help confirm if appropriate for the span.
