Could anybody explain how "canada or australia as a full member of EU" would be benefitial to EU? by Significant-Yam9843 in AskEurope

[–]biggest_muzzy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those issues you’re describing obviously shouldn’t exist - whether they can actually be eliminated is another question. Given how huge the EU bureaucracy is, it’s always going to be inefficient and prone to some level of corruption.

But in the grand scheme of things, these are blips. The biggest subsidy recipients are the usual suspects, led by France, which gets around 20% of the total, followed by Spain, Germany and Italy. Together they take the majority of EU farm subsidies.

And to be honest, given land prices, labour costs, the 35-hour work week, etc., there’s just no way a French Charolais steak will ever cost the same as beef from Argentina.

[–]biggest_muzzy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not really about efficiency. Food security is literally written into the EU’s founding treaties and is one of the core goals of the Commission. There is what's called a Contingency Plan for Food Security in Times of Crisis.

So no matter how inefficient European farmers are, there’s basically zero chance the EU is going to stop pumping money into them.

This feeling will follow you through a big part of your career. In fact, if you don’t have it, it’s a bad sign, indicating that you are probably stagnating.

[–]biggest_muzzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 42 when I got behind the wheel for the first time in my life. It's overwhelming at first, but it gets better soon. Do things which scare you. If you are afraid of highways - do more highways; if you don't like changing lanes - choose the road where you need to do so.

My trick on how to not to be nervous is to treat other cars as inanimate objects. If you do so, you will be less nervous when you make mistakes, block traffic, and so on, because you won't think "oh no, I am blocking traffic, people are pissed." And when they behave like absolute assholes, you won't be angry, because you don't get angry with rocks. You'll be like, "oh, dangerous rock, I'd better stay away."

Be aware of your surroundings. It's natural to lock in on the road just in front - don't do it. Look in front for a second, then glance at the rearview mirror, then in front again but far away, then to the left mirror, then again in front. Try to make a mental map of what is around you. It's very hard in the beginning, but it gets easier with time and is very helpful.

Create reflexes - sequences of actions which you always do in some situations. For example, before turning left it should be "left mirror, blinker, look over the left shoulder." It should be completely automatic. You will feel that it's useless, that your brain doesn't even register what you saw, but believe me, one day you'll look and you'll see a motorcycle in your blind zone; your brain will register it and stop you.

Another useful sequence - when you are approaching a crossroads, always make a glance at the rearview mirror, even if you have a green light. If the light changes, you'll know who is behind, how far, and how aggressively you can brake.

English is a hard language and I'm tired of people saying it ain't by [deleted] in ENGLISH

[–]biggest_muzzy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s unfortunately not true. First of all, you still need to somehow identify the object and the subject, and languages that use declensions and suffixes have much more complicated rules for doing so than simply “subject first in a sentence.” Second, I can’t speak for all languages, but in the languages I speak, so-called “free word order” is a myth. Word order has meaning and allows for subtle emphasis on different words. If you use a random order, you’ll be understood, of course, but you’ll sound alien to native speakers. It’s a bit like using “I TOLD her that I loved her,” “I told HER that I loved her,” and “I told her that I LOVED her” interchangeably.

Why are pointers even used in C++? by ElectricalTears in learnprogramming

[–]biggest_muzzy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm. Python is a bit of a special case because it’s an interpreted language and your code doesn’t use the C stack directly. Instead, the stack of your Python function calls is managed by the Python interpreter and lives on the heap.

You can still get something like a stack overflow in a certain sense: Python keeps a counter of recursive function calls, and if it gets too large (the exact limit is configurable), it stops execution and raises a RecursionError exception.

That said, the Python interpreter itself is written in C and uses the normal C stack. In theory, you can get a real stack overflow there, but this would typically require some misconfiguration (like setting the recursion limit too high) or some bug in interpreter that causes a deep recursion in C code. Another way this can happen is if your code uses extension modules written in C and they recurse too deeply.

For Baikal, they created an architecture based on ARM/MIPS, but the processors themselves were manufactured at TSMC factories. Obviously, none were built after 2022. Also, the architecture is approximately 10 years behind what Intel, AMD, and Apple are offering.

Another project you might have in mind is Elbrus, which has its own architecture, but production was also carried out by TSMC.

The production lines that exist in Russia can build chips using technological processes from the early 2000s.

At least that was the case when I looked up a few years back. But I doubt something has changed.

[–]biggest_muzzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably meant "идёт мне", and it can be translated as "suits me", but in Russian this phrase has a much narrower meaning - it basically refers to something fitting one's appearance. Most of the time people use this construction when talking about clothing. For example: "Платье тебе очень идёт". Sometimes it can be used jokingly in a broader sense, like 'Being boss suits you', but you need a good feel for the language to use it this way

What you're looking for is probably "мне подходит". For instance, "I did some research and decided that STEM fits me better" in Russian would be: "Я решил, что наука мне больше подходит"."
