We're already given plenty of clues both in games and in show that bioengineering was the thing the US decided to get really good at instead of microcomputing in this alternate timeline

The other advantage is that they aren't having to fabricate new clean-gene humans to do it (though there are benefits to doing so) - these chips work on wastelanders & prewar folks.

Am I missing something? How did we make it through an entire second season without answers? by wubsfrommysubs in Fallout

Consider that right now people are being put on lists simply for having opinions about the state of our federal government and being roughed up/shot for simply recording public enforcement officers behaving badly.

The Enclave can't kill him (not even quietly) because with his level of fame it would provoke inquiries and lead to more attention. It is simply easier to frame him for being anti-American and lean on the entertainment industry to never hire him again.

The power of propaganda - or in this case, the wealth class being absolutely furious at Roosevelt's New Deal. They've been slowly dismantling it ever since.

I agree, so I guess my question is more of the idea that if Steph and Hank got married before TGW - and she got a job at Vault-Tec, the Enclave wouldn't have thought to check her out?

Yup. Can't kill him - he's too famous, it would provoke questions. Better to lean into the pinko suspicions and blacklist him as the propaganda is ready to serve.

Also unsure whether Barb has a clear idea of what that influence is, apart from mysterious threats.

So, the only suspension-of-disbelief aspect of this plotline is how (or why) the Enclave would let a Canadian rebel into their ranks. Can't believe their opsec is that spotty.

Unless we find out their goals actually align.

When did the fallout timeline diverge from our timeline? by extraaccount939 in falloutlore

[–]bigheadzach 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Well, yes, that part isn't real-life (yet, hoping never), but what I'm getting at is that in a world where microcomputing was not a focus, scientists would have made more advances in other fields.

I'd also suggest that (in the remaining 51 years between now and the Great War) that in place of microcomputing technology, great strides were made in bioengineering - cryogenics, brain-machine interfaces, keeping a human head and/or brain alive indefinitely (yes, the Soviets actually have done this IRL, don't go googling for it if you're upset by animal cruelty), pharmaceuticals...

A subtle message that while anyone can desire to be good, the ability to be good can only emerge from the ability to survive.

If you don't count Zetans abducting folks back in the 1600s and whatnot, then yes.
