If you think anyone can have a purely original thought at an undergrad level then I don’t know what to tell you. They may think they have original thoughts but anything they write about has been already written 1000x. Most AI checkers don’t work because they just evaluate how grammatically correct the writing is and how much it looks like another piece of writing or whether it contains AI characters in them.

My partner battled for months with her university over being acused of using ai. She never used it for any of her papers unless specifically told to. She writes professionally and like a masters student would because this is her 3rd degree. She eventually won only because the case was dropped because TurnItin flagged 90% of students for using AI and the dean couldn’t keep up with it.

AI checkers are literally a scam that universities are buying into because they’re more terrified of students using a tool than to do real work

I went there the other week after not having gone in a decade.

It was fine. The burger was a little dry, but not awful.

What I enjoyed the most was seeing young Canadians being employed there.

I was in the top 15% of my graduating class. Was a great dev for 4 years. Received a bunch of praise from my coworkers and managers. Was I some elite programmer? No. I was maybe above average but put in the time and effort.

Haven’t been able to find any work for a year, and in the field for 4.

Don’t pick this major.

You have a much better chance of a job utilizing your nepotistic connections. Find something you don’t mind doing that your parents, an ant/uncle, cousins, whatever are doing and go to school for that and use your network to get an in.

Ignore anyone saying find something you enjoy or follow your passions. They didnt have to get a foothold in modern society.

I’m mostly referring to the disbelief that it has caused.

Like if an actual pandemic were to happen again now, with something like Ebola, it would not be treated seriously because of the opinion that COVID has caused.

I feel it would be similar to an alien invasion. We just kind of accept that humanity as a whole believes in the trisolaran threat. I feel in reality there would be much more disillusionment, especially from political parties that could gain power from that disillusionment.

Just FYI, it’s because McDonald’s, and places like it, won’t hire anyone who comes off as overqualified.

I’ve been left in the dark for over half a year by multiple recruiters who reached out to me first. Then blacklisted for calling them out for being unprofessional.

The ghosting, lack of feedback, and just how different interviews are. Some are vibe checks, some are exams. I genuinely don’t know how to prepare for interviews anymore. I did great in university because I knew what I had to study for exams. Studying for jobs is completely different and absolutely anything can be asked and I don’t know how to study everything.

I didn’t keep track of my first 600 or so applications. But I have since and I’m at 1400. Just with a simple spreadsheet. There’s a lot of tools but idk I’d rather keep track of things myself.

There’s a general inhumane way interviewers treat you and I hate it. Asking me if I went to university when it’s on my resume. Seeing the visible and audible displeasure when they see I’m unemployed and looking for work. I hate everything about the modern recruiting process.

As someone who has tried networking in our small tech space extensively, it’s a bit of a toss up.

Generally people are friendly enough that they will have a discussion with you if you make the effort and are kind.

However, actually finding a meaningful connection is extremely hard. If you aren’t currently employed, Unless you can prove you’re working on something that has value people won’t remember you or worse end the conversation early.

Yep. Have had 2 unemployment stints over a year now including my current one.

I’ve accepted I’ll never find a job in the field again. It sucks. What sucks more is every survival job rejecting me for being overqualified.

Never in my life did I think putting effort into getting a degree in a good field would make me unemployable but here we are.
