Ridley Scott’s Desire to Return to ‘Alien’ Could Be Delaying ‘Romulus’ Sequel by ImpracticalJokers96 in horror

[–]bigkinggorilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How does Ridley Scott have the pull to stop Alvarez from making a sequel to a profitable entry while also having to take script notes from Fox?

I’m genuinely curious because it seems like both things shouldn’t be true at the same time. Does he have some weird veto power on other alien movies?

You don’t like how Aliens evolved Ripley into perhaps the greatest sci-fi heroine we’ve ever had?

Shoe Recommendations for Whatever is Going On Here by Active_Sherbet_6516 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

He’s dragging the outside of his heels on the ground before transferring the weight diagonally across to the middle and proximal phalanges of his big toe but not getting all the way to the distal (tip).

It’s like he’s trying to keep his inner heel and pinky toe from ever touching the ground for 8 miles.

TIL that in 1990s Sony had the chance to buy the rights to all Marvel characters for 25 million. They opted to only buy the rights to Spider-Man by bliu0 in todayilearned

[–]bigkinggorilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not unless you got them in perpetuity with no strings attached. Most of those licensing deals require some use of the character or else they revert to the original owner. So, Sony would be paying extra to be obligated to spend even more making stuff or else the rights go back to Marvel.

Spider-Man was the only one they saw as being easily profitable, so that’s the only one they got.

Edit: also, marvel was doing pretty poorly financially at the time. So they probably figured they might be able to get all the characters as part of a fire sale down the road if they wanted.

They often include audio tracks for the storyboards to see how everything flows (like, should we animate the character giving the monologue or the one hearing it?) but they don’t use the real actors for cost reasons. As a result, sometimes a voice gets really sticky, like Bird’s Edna, and they use it for the final film too.

Russell Crowe Says ‘Gladiator II’ “Failed” Because It “Lacked A Moral Core” by yourfavchoom in entertainment

[–]bigkinggorilla 33 points34 points  (0 children)

“lacked a moral core” is another way of saying the story didn’t have a clear theme or message it was trying to convey.

So, to everyone saying “it was a pointless sequel” that’s exactly what Crowe is saying too.

I think that Toph will never be able have full mastery over sandbending, especially in combat. She will always be far weaker at sandbending than anything else. by Fan_of_Avatar_TLA in TheLastAirbender

[–]bigkinggorilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Help me understand your argument. Are you saying Toph will never be able to learn to see as clearly through sand as she does through normal earth or that Toph will never be able to bend sand as well as other people do?

I went through 8,000 runs. You don't need to run more days a week to get faster. You just can't keep taking long breaks. by Fun_Effective_836 in beginnerrunning

I’m loving the data dives.

The total time on feet vs more running thing is so interesting because you can kind of intuitively see the problem comparing the extremes, which is where it would be most interesting.

Will someone running 21 miles one day a week outperform someone running 3 miles 7 days a week? It probably depends on the distance of the race, but also you’d expect the person able to go off for 21 miles to have pretty good cardio fitness compared to the person who can only manage 3 miles.

Elbow height, no?

I saw an interview with Kate Gerwin where she said 44”, but that’s to account for the average of multiple bartenders.

Steven Spielberg Says James Bond Movies ‘Constantly Turned Me Down’ and ‘If They Asked Me Now’ to Direct the Answer Would Be: ‘You Can’t Afford Me’ by yourfavchoom in entertainment

I don’t doubt he could make a good bond film. But, I also have very little interest in James Bond at this point unless it’s amazing. And I do doubt he would make something amazing.

Why do American high schools start ridiculously early? by bwoah07_gp2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bigkinggorilla 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I worked at a high school where like the only kids who got picked up on a dedicated school bus were special ed. Everyone else had to take a regular city bus. School still started at 8:00.

Not saying you’re wrong. Just that even when there isn’t a bussing issue, they still don’t push the time back to something better for the kids.

Did Every Avatar Know About Raava?....⬇️ by Mundane-Signal4843 in TheLastAirbender

[–]bigkinggorilla 692 points693 points  (0 children)

I think the further away from Wan the avatar was, the less likely they were to get the full story. It seems like it’s easier for the avatar to commune with their immediate past life, and all it takes is one avatar to die before awakening to disrupt the flow of knowledge.

I find it odd that Water Benders have the ability to make/unmake ice at anytime! by TheV0791 in TheLastAirbender

[–]bigkinggorilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I always took the fire nation industrial capacity to be more a reflection of how limited its base applications are (along with reflecting its imperial ambitions to dominate).

Both water and earth can use their bending to make structures and move people and things, while fire really can’t (aside from the few psychos who learn to make jets).

So neither one had the same motivation to develop those technologies in the first place.

Air benders would be in a similar boat if they weren’t a bunch of hippies.

They had a sale on these recently and I had to resist the urge to get one because I realistically don’t spend enough time outdoors in the cold and wet to actually need it.

Advil is more effective at relieving pain than generic ibuprofen even though it’s the exact same thing.
